1. Bring it here, O cupbearer, from the cheek of a gazelle,
A sword whose glances in battle are cutting,

2. And mix it for me with pure wine,
Pleasant to me in youth with bubbles rising.

3. It is indeed the best remedy for every malady,
For a lover whose passion does not subside,

4. Give it to me, and fear not the guile of a slanderer,
False in word, treacherous, overweening,

5. Give it to me, for time after obstinacy,
Its vicissitudes have mellowed and softened.

6. Now in Egypt rules a noble leader,
True to his word, generous and gallant,

7. And people sleep in the shade of security,
After fear that overwhelmed the valiant,

8. He restored institutions after their decline,
With the sciences by which glory is graced,

9. His determination rose to guard the land,
When the armies of enemies through it roamed,

10. For that he secured the aid of a bold man,
Compassionate to the people, wise and apt,

11. Eager for the welfare of the citizens,
Rightly handling their affairs with tact,

12. A guide in councils and gatherings, gentle,
Instructing every official and representative,

13. The provinces flourished after decline,
But for him, crops were about to spoil and rot,

14. Affairs were set right when he drove away
Corrupters from them, strong and selective,

15. Through him, the sun of laws appeared
In Egypt's sky, never to be eclipsed,

16. He strove to propagate them whereverfound,
With mercy he never ceased to encompass,

17. As enforcing them brings rights back swiftly,
To those deprived, however encumbered,

18. On them depends curbing the wicked,
Contract-breaking, false pretense and aggression,

19. Transgressing his limits though a servant,
By following procedures ever obligated,

20. O Allah, what an outstanding ruler!
Below him Tariq and Ma'an and Hanif,

21. With him in opinion a stern young man,
And Asaam denying, not acknowledging,

22. By his excellence positions are exalted,
And but for him, none could aspire or hold them

23. Indeed, he raised Mahmoud's fame and repute,
By praise that focused his lofty aspects,

24. The star of his fortune rose when he became,
Known through affiliation in the universe,

25. His office is graced with fine meanings,
Described in eloquence and fluent address,

26. May God ease his heart in the land,
To fend injustice from its people and judge fairly,

27. No jeweled necklace glories in praising him,
That is not strung with pure pearls polished to perfection,

28. The ode is crowned with a beautiful conclusion,
Embellished with the sincerest devotion,

29. Or a breeze of acceptance brought to him,
A sweet fragrance of pure musk I sense.
