1. Your meadows are devoid of the song of nightingales
And empty of the hands of expert hunters

2. So leave your homes and mount any lean, long-necked she-camel
That can traverse the sandy terrain

3. And abandon the settlements of people you have suffered among
Until you come to the court of Mas'ud

4. He who established generosity in an age when
Its landmarks have vanished from all existence

5. A full moon that illuminates its abode
So cities have relinquished their keys to him

6. His sanctuary has become a refuge for visitors
As though they have donned David's coat of mail

7. So seek his generous hands, white as virtues, if
You fear, o traveler, your dark days

8. For he is the generous one whose hospitality
Is always met by a sea of abundant goodness

9. If Hatem al-Tai had lived in his time
He would have said this one is truly generous

10. And he is al-Ghadnafar - in the days of his rule
He did not fear the throw of a spear in battle

11. If he advances into the fray, determined,
What enemy will you see him spare?

12. He never breaks a promise except a threat,
Nor desists from fulfilling what he has pledged

13. He has garlanded the poets of the age with his favors
With every precious collar you see an adornment of beauty

14. So they sing his praises with joy - and what wonder!
For the garlanded displayed excellent warbling

15. O most generous of people! If the clouds are miserly with what
They contain, and fastest to bring rain if called upon!

16. Take these verses, freely given, for they have been presented
To a worthy one, with a unique, precious wreath of praise

17. Perhaps if God wills, it will remind him
Of the state of its composer without complication

18. May God protect him and give him tranquility, fortune, victory, and support!
How the maidens' song by the water gladdens me when they dance

19. And the leaves sing on the branch of a willow!
