Yearning wafts like zephyrs in the keen-edged night.

2. Seize the horses’ necks, they pant, in headlong flight,
On through the dark the heart’s desire shines light.

3. Speed a pacing steed, the halted camps excite,
Stirred by your songs, passions in me ignite.

4. Rend the slow night’s wings, spurn all that breeds affright,
When the journey’s bleak, hope makes the spirit light.

5. Start while the bold Yemeni band take flight
To Nejd’s morn, for there delay breeds blight.

6. By his shrine let longing’s wine your thirst requite,
No other spring for fervent souls shines bright.

7. In all that meets your gaze, let memory write
With passion’s ink, things call their likes to sight.

8. If the host’s lightning flashes gild your sight,
In oneness dwell, division’s merely slight.

9. When she reveals her face, myriad lights unite,
In her gaze unity hides its myriad might.

10. None but the eye exists, though numerous in sight,
Names are many, but the Named is ever bright.

11. Repeated, yet the same, in mystic light,
Aspects of one unseen whose gleams are bright.

12. Unite them, for in your rays they shine bright,
Revealed, unveiled, in clearest mystic light.

13. By them I swear, no praise those grace-notes quite
That shower the dot beneath the Arabic “ghain”.

14. In her all-gathering oneness prostrate, unite,
That truly joins, a dawn-lit flower bright.

15. Read lines that tell her being’s mystic height,
Meanings in poetry’s dark vale shine bright.

16. Verbal nouns show the course of her insight,
Words tell the news her attributes recite.

17. You see the raised news in the nominate bright
With definition, declining from the height.

18. Her cheek’s cherried garden blooms bright
Where hearts are freely harvested aright.

19. Wisdom’s springs well from her teachings’ height,
Knowledge pours its abundant rays bright.

20. When you wish her well, purely unite,
Your witnessing leaves you nothing of your might.

21. Die and live on through her to your delight.
Don’t cloak yourself, let your existence blight!

22. Cast off your being’s shroud, rest folded, contrite,
Change your desire, do not be choosy, slight.

23. Become her devotee, then claim your might,
As if you roam creation free and bright.

24. With zeal bare your sharp sword, and unitary fight,
Say “God is greatest” and fear only His might.

25. Strive and see and fear God day and night,
His word instructs you, clear, not trite.

26. Start by dawn, pray in the early light
Blessings on the root in whom we all delight,

27. Whose redolence wafts in sweet perfumed flight,
On his kin and friends who plumb his knowledge’s height.

28. While the winds of grace from the Unseen recite,
The hearts expand, flushed with his blessings bright.

29. Rein in your eager steed, let ardour excite,
For the bold band to Nejd’s morn take flight!
