٦. واستنزلَتْكَ لغُربةٍ ولأنتَ مِن
عَلياك في لَجِبٍ من الأنصار

7. And it forgot that the countries need
you with the blindness to sight.

٧. وتجاهَلتْ أنَّ البلادَ بحاجةٍ
لكَ حاجةَ الأعمى إلى الإِبصار

8. It extended from others to you allied forearms
of comrades for you, righteous leaders.

٨. مُدَّتْ من الأُخرى إليك معاصمٌ
مِن رفقةٍ لك قادةٍ أبرار

للكاتِبَيْنِ رفاقُ تلكَ الدار

١١. بَكَرَ النَّعِيُّ فما سَمعتُ بمِثْلها
عِبءاً على الأسماعِ والأبصارِ

١٧. في حينَ رامَ سِواه خوضَ عُبابها
فطغى عليه فضاعَ في التَّيار

18. The pliability of a willow branch, when it weakens a bit
is dangerous, among the greatest dangers;

١٨. وصليبُ عُودٍ حينَ بعضُ مُرونةٍ
في ضَعفها خطرٌ مِن الأخطار

19. And the barrenness of a flinty soul, when it hardens a bit,
is a stone among stones.

١٩. وطَريُّ نفسٍ حينَ بعضُ صلابةٍ
في عُقمها حجرٌ مِن الأحجار

20. And a hidden scheme, where a plotter soars,
and schemes bring disgrace.

٢٠. وخَفيُّ كيدٍ حيثُ يسمو كائدٌ
ومن المكايدِ جالبٌ للعار

And frank opinion did not swerve from a course

٢١. وصريحُ رأيٍ لم يَحِد عن خُطَّةٍ
ليلوذَ من تأويلها بجِدار

22. to seek protection behind a wall.

٢٢. حَرْبٌ على مُستعمِرٍ وربيبهِ
ومُسالِمٍ مُستَعْمِراً ومُجاري

27. And the thirsty throng drank its fill, and their sons
were tasked with roses and publishing.

٢٧. أأبا عزِيزٍ كنتَ تُذكي جذوتي
ويَلَذُّ سَمْعُك مَنطقي وحِواري

And the silent north, it was said: the work of neighbors!

٢٨. غوْثَ الصريخِ ، أتتك تُعوِلُ حُرَّةٌ
حَّراءُ صارخةٌ من الأشعار

٢٩. هَيَّجتَ منّي أيَّ داءِ كامنٍ
وقدحتَ منّي أيّ َزندٍ واري

والثورةِ الحمراء والثُّوّار

31. And the coming savior walked on the starving—
sustaining them—and the naked, with a roaring flood.

٣١. والأرضِ بالدَّمِ ترتوي عن دِمْنَةٍ
وتَمُجّهُ عن روضةٍ مِعطار

32. And the surprised wondered at an
odious condition: “Who are the people of this house?”

٣٢. والخيلِ تَزحفُ لم تَدَعْ لمُغيِرها
جثثٌ تُغَطي الأرضَ أيَّ مُغار!

33. “It is for the Companions

٣٣. قسَماً بتلكَ العاطفاتِ ولم تكُنْ
لي قبلَها من حِلْفةٍ بالنَّار

٣٤. إنَّ الذينَ عهِدتَهُم حطَبَ الوغى
لولاهُم لم تشتعِل بأوار

35. From every lofty, proud gazes in victory parades,
humbling metropolises.

٣٥. والَّلاقِحينَ نَتاجَها بأعزِّ ما
ملَكَتْ يمينٌ من حِمىً وذمار

36. If their mettle were tested with an ordeal,
you would wonder at the irony of Fate.

٣٦. والداهناتِ دماؤُهم لِمَمَ الثَّرى
والمُؤنساتِ شواطئَ الأنهار

37. It is for those who from everything youth is asked to bear
a goblet, and from every effort ennobling the naked,

٣٧. والناحرينَ مِنَ الضَّحايا خيرَ ما
حَمَلَت بُطونُ حرائرٍ أطهار

38. And unleashed at unleashers, following whims,
walking like those weighted with wine;

٣٨. ما إنْ تَزالُ حقوقُهُمْ كذَويهمُ
في الفَقْر سارحةً معَ الأبقار!

39. They forget the critic, and if they remembered, they would writhe
in shame from a garment disgraced upon them.

٣٩. وأعزُّ ما تبغي الحلائلُ مِنهمُ
أنْ تُسترَ العَوراتُ بالأطمار

40. How many others wanted the like and dissolution
threw them the scraps of the abode of desolation!

٤٠. خمسٌ وعشرونَ انقضَتْ وكأنَّها
بشخُوصِها خَبَرٌ منَ الأخبارِ

في ظِلِّ دُستورٍ لها وشِعار

47. Motives indeed rallied and filed suit over
my silence to its rousing orator.

٤٧. ما يَطلُبُ المأسورُ من يدِ آسرٍ :
إسداءَ عارفةٍ وفَكَّ إسار

48. And I knew you by steadfastness of sorrows, of refined
thoughts, distributing ideas for the countries and its people.

٤٨. ورِوايةٍ حبَكَ الزَّمانُ فُصولَها
فبدَتْ لنا ممسوخةً الأدوار

49. And I found the flint of memories sorrowful,
cooling hearts aflame for you.

٤٩. من شرّ ما اختلقَ الرُّواةُ ،وَلفَّقتْ
حِيلٌ ، وضمَّتْ دَفَّةُ الأسفار

50. And I learned laments that arouse you reviving them,
so I provoked them, and they gushed every shower.

٥٠. وممثلينَ تصنّعاً ووراءَهمْ
خَلْفَ السِتار مُلّقِنٌ مُتواري

51. Alas for Euphrates’ youth, and whoever of them
Iraq hopes dawn will break clear for!

٥١. ومفّرِقينَ مَذاهباً وعناصراً
مُتَكَفِّلينَ سياسةَ استعمار

52. Bearing their calamities’ weight—
they are no flickering glows—

٥٢. نزلوا على حُكم الغريبِ وعَرَّسوا
في ظِلِّ مأْثَمةٍ له وفَجار

53. And repelling, when hardships creep up, defeat,
and impervious retreats in escape;

٥٣. وتحلَّبُوا أوطارَهُ فاذا بها
وَشَلٌ لِما استحلى من الأوطار

54. And sacrificing for dignity, when it was cheapened,
the costliest of dowries and most dreadful prices;

٥٤. واستفرَشَ الشعْبُ الثرى ، ودُروبهُمْ
مملوءةٌ بنُثارةِ الأزهار!

55.
Poverty, while the gates of wealth swing open,

٥٥. وتحَّلأَ الجَمْعُ الظِماءُ ووُكِّلَتْ
أبناؤهم بالوِرد والإِصدار

56. and misery, while ease of life flows!
And igniting their souls and hearts

٥٦. ذُعِر الجْنوبُ فقيلَ : كيدُ خوارجٍ !
وسكا الشَّمالُ فقيلَ : صنْعُ جِوار!

57. a flame progressing by its guidance carried on.
And suppressing their roar within their chests,

٥٧. وتنابزَ الوَسطُ المُدِلُّ فلم يَدَعْ
بعضٌ لبعضٍ ظِنَّةً لفَخار

58. so when these rupture with it, what cacophony!
And content in life to dignify

٥٨. ودعا فريقٌ أنْ تسودَ عَدالةٌ
فرمُوا بكلِّ شنيعةٍ وشَنار!

59. with miserable rags and tatters;
While the enticements—tempting hopes

٥٩. ومشَى المغيثُ على الجياع
– يَقوتهُمْ – وعلى العُراةِ ، بجحفلٍ جرّار

60. dashed, from help or chaste virgins—
Do not despair that upon a night might shine

٦٠. وتساءلَ المتَعَجِّبونَ لحالةٍ
نكراءَ : مَنْ هُم أهلُ هذي الدار؟

61. dawn without the morn having gleamed.
Though you have walked embers, their live coals,

٦١. هِيَ للصحابةِ مِن بَني الأنصار
من كلِّ بَدريٍّ وكلّ حَواري

62. and tread them at their very edges,
The discomfort of things, however hard pressed

٦٢. للحاكمينَ بأمرِهم عن غَيرِهم!
ولصَفْوةِ الأسباطِ والأصهار

63. in the chronology of history, lasts shortly.
The rule of tyrants, its claws trimmed, must

٦٣. من كلِّ غازٍ شامخٍ في صدره
زاهي الوسامِ ، مدِّوخِ الأمصار

64. topple, and days restore their time of union
After estrangement and hostility.

٦٤. هيَ للذينَ لو امتحنتَ بلاءهم
لعجِبتَ من سُخْريَّةِ الأقدار

65. There your choicest friends will dwell
and sweetest of neighbors.

٦٥. هي للذي من كلِّ ما يَصِمُ الفتى
كاسٍ ، ومن جُهْدٍ يُشرّفُ عاري

66. There a group will see the spoils of war and desire
to grasp at your tailwind.

٦٦. ومُسلَّطٍ لمُسَلَّطينَ مشتْ به الأهواءُ
مِشيةَ مُثقَلٍ بخُمار

67. So beware belittling the consequence of despair,
and for the new epoch’s time, usher it in!

٦٧. نَسِيَ المُعيرَ ولو تذكَّرَ لأنثنى
خَزْيانَ من ثوبٍ عليه مُعار

٦٨. كم رامَ غيرُكَ مِثلَها فأحلَّهُ
نزَقُ الغُرور بشَرِّ دارِ بَوار

٦٩. بل لو تذكَّرَ لم يجدْ لضميرهِ
ومصيرهِ عَوناً من التَّذكار

٧٠. لم يبقَ إلَّا أنْ تُتَمَّمَ خطوةٌ
ويظَلَّ يَلعبُ لاعبٌ بالنار

٧١. فلَرُبَّما نفَتِ الشَّكاةَ وقرَّبَتْ
يومَ الخلاصِ سياسةُ الإصرار

٧٢. أأبا عزيزٍ والحديثُ كما رَوَوا
شَجَنٌ ، ومُرُّ القول عذْبٌ جاري

٧٣. ومن العواطفِ ما يثورُ ويَغتلي
مثلَ الجحيم ، ويرتمي بشِرار

٧٤. عَفْواً وإنْ شطَّ المَدى عن غايتي
ونبَتْ جيادُ الشعر عن مِضماري

٧٥. فلقد تَحَشَّدَتِ البواعثُ واشتكَتْ

٧٦. ولقد عَهِدْتُكَ بالبلاد وأهلِها
جَمَّ الشُجونِ ، مُوزَّعَ الأفكار

٧٧. ووجدتُ قَدْحَ الذكريات شجيَّةً
بَرْداً لِأفئدةٍ عليك حِرار

٧٨. وعَرَفتُ أشجاناً يثيرُكَ بَعْثُها

٧٩. إيهٍ شبابَ الرافدين ومَنْ بهم
يرجو العراقُ تَبَلّجَ الأسحار

٨٠. الحاملِينَ مِنَ الفوادحِ ثِقْلَها
ليسوا بأنكاسٍ ولا أغمار

٨١. والَّذائِدينَ عن الحياض إذا انتحَتْ
كُرَبٌ ، ولاذَ مُكابرٌ بفِرار

٨٢. والباذلينَ عن الكرامة أُرخصَتْ
أغلَى المُهورِ ، وأفدحَ الأسعار

٨٣. الفَقْرَ إذ طُرقُ الغِنى مفتوحةٌ
والبؤسَ إذ غَدقُ النعيم جواري

٨٤. ومؤَّججينَ نفوسَهمْ وقُلوبَهمْ
شُعَلاً يسيرُ على هُدها الساري

٨٥. والحابسينَ زئيرَهم بصدورهم
فإذا انفجرنَ بهِ فأيُّ ضواري

٨٦. والقانعينَ مِن الحياة رخيَّةً
بلُماظَةٍ ، ومن الكَرى بغرِار

٨٧. والمغرِياتُ مُراوداتٌ ترتجى
وتَخيبُ ، من عُونٍ ومن أبكار

٨٨. لا تيأسوا أنْ يَلُحْ مِن ليلةٍ
فجرٌ ، ولم تؤذِنْ بضوءِ نهار

٨٩. فلئِنْ صَلِيتُمْ مِن هَناةٍ جَمْرها
ومشَيْتُمُ منهنَّ فوق شِفار

٩٠. فطِوالُ مُحْرِجةِ الأمور وإنْ قَسَتْ
في شِرعةِ التأريخِ جِدُّ قِصار

٩١. لا بُدَّ أنْ يَثِبَ الزَّمانُ ، وينثني
حُكمُ الطُغاةِ مُقَلَّمَ الأظفار

٩٢. وتُجَدِّدَ الأيَّامُ عَهْدَ وصالِها
مِن بَعدِ إعراضٍ لها ونِفار

٩٣. فهُناك سوفَ يكونُ من زَهَراتِكم
أصفى معارِفها وأطيبُ جار

٩٤. وهناكَ سوفَ يَرى الغَنيِمةَ معشرٌ
أنْ يُمْسِكُوا من خَلْفِكُمْ بغُبار

٩٥. فحَذارِ من عُقبى القُنوطِ حذارِ
وبِدارِ للعهدِ الجديدِ بِدار
