1. I yearned to defend the right, the sleepless nights,
Had it not been for death, I'd not bear the stillness,

١. هَويِتَ لِنُصرةِ الحقّ السُهادا
فلولا الموتُ لم تُطِقِ الرُّقادا

2. Had it not been for death, I'd not cease the struggle,
With it I subdued the oppressors, not yielding,

٢. ولولا الموتُ لم تَتْرُكْ جِهاداً
فَلَلْتَ به الظغاةَ ولا جِلادا

3. Had it not been for death, I'd not delight some,
Dazing them, not grieving the mournful,

٣. ولولا الموتُ لم تُفْرِحْ فُرادى
صعَقْتَهُمُ ، ولم تُحزِنْ سودا

4. Had it not been for death, no fire would vanish
A flourishing place, reaching harvest,

٤. ولولا الموتُ لم يَذهبْ حريقٌ
بيانعةٍ وقد بَلَغتْ حَصادا

5. Though mourning brings back the dead,
And a bereaved reaches their wish,

٥. وإنْ كانَ الحدادُ يَرُدُّ مَيتاً
وتَبلُغُ منه ثاكلةٌ مُرادا

6. Yet the East between yesterday and tomorrow
Wears mourning disgracefully!

٦. فانَّ الشَّرقَ بينَ غدٍ وأمسٍ
عليكَ بِذِلَّةٍ لبِسَ الحِدادا!

7. Rise up, O covered star,
And kindle the abode of nobility aflame,

٧. ترفَّعْ أيُّها النجم المُسَجَّى
وزِد في دارة الشَّرَفِ اتّقادا

8. Roam in the eternity of nights,
Regaining in the universe a vision,

٨. ودُرْ بالفكر في خَلَدِ الليالي
وجُلْ في الكون رأياً مُستعادا

9. With silence, be more eloquent than your speech,
More intimate in discussion than a confidante,

٩. وكُنْ بالصَّمتِ أبلغَ منك نُطْقاً
وأورى في مُحاجَجةٍ زِنادا

10. Death is the shortest captivity,
Of one whose ideas and beliefs were confined,

١٠. فانَّ الموتَ أقصرُ قِيدَ باعٍ
بأنْ يَغتالَ فِكراً واعتقادا

11. Jamal al-Din, O lofty spirit,
Who brought the Message then departed,

١١. جمالَ الدين ، يا رُوحاً عَليّاً
تنزَّلَ بالرسالة ثمَّ عادا

12. You endured the deathly tribulations bravely,
None but you endured them seeking deliverance,

١٢. تجشَّمْتَ المهالكَ في عَسوفٍ
تجشَّمَهُ سواك فما استَقادا

13. On the path of the eternal, whoever emulates,
Their ways will be guided and follow suit,

١٣. طَريقِ الخالدينَ ، فمَنْ تَحامى
مصايرَهُمْ تَحاماه وحادا

14. With much terror in the remains, skulls covered,
His caves and meadows and settlements,

١٤. كثير الرُعْبِ بالأشلاء ، غطَّتْ
مَغاورَهُ الجماجِمُ والوِهادا

15. Skulls of the martyred leaders of nobility and truth,
Who delved into his realms venturing!

١٥. جماجِمُ رائِدي شَرَفٍ وحقٍّ
تهاوَوا في مَجاهلهِ ارتْيادا !

16. And the ghosts of victims thronging atop,
Crowding over the tyrants, assembling,

١٦. وأشباحُ الضحايا في طواهُ
على السارينَ تحتشِد احتشادا!

17. And atop his palaces lines were etched,
With the ink of the free their scroll,

١٧. وفوقَ طُروسه خُطَّتْ سُطورٌ
دمُ الأحرار كان لها مِدادا

18. You split his solid rock, fearing no misguidance,
No beasts or night or loneliness,

١٨. شقَقْتَ فِجاجَهُ لم تخْشَ تَيْهاً
ومَذْئَبةً ، وليلاً ، وانُفرادا

19. For you carry what none equals in might:
Faith and conscience!

١٩. لأِنَّكَ حاملٌ ما لا يُوازي
بقُوَّتهِ : العقيدةَ والفؤادا!

20. Though paths and their treaders differ,
And their goals, nearing and distancing,

٢٠. وتختلِفُ الدُروبُ وسالكوها
وغايتُها ، دُنوّاً وابتعادا

21. And builders differ, and how many a builder,
Built from one idea a palace erect,

٢١. ويختلفُ البُناةُ ، ورُبَّ بانٍ
بَنى مِن فِكرةٍ صَرْحاً وشادا

22. While you gained from lethal poison you savored,
None but you did without perishing!

٢٢. وأنت ازْدَدْتَ من سُمٍّ زعافٍ
تَذَوَّقَهُ سَواك فما استزادا!

23. Struggling with the despot, you saw his blindness
Revealed, and his sure steps faltering,

٢٣. نضالِ المستبدِّ ، يَرى انكشافاً
عَمايتَه ، وعثرتَه سَدادا

24. When he deemed lawful his deviance, and listened,
To those flattering him increasingly,

٢٤. إذأ استحلىَ غَوايتَه وأصغى
إلى المتزلّفِينَ له تمادى

25. You feared God knowingly, and truth,
If you fear not people in truth, commands,

٢٥. خَشِيتَ اللهَ عن علمٍ ، وحقٌّ
إذا لم تَخشَ في الحقّ العبادا

26. You found the greatest bliss, and it was,
The elegance of thought and resolve emboldened,

٢٦. وجَدْتَ اللذَّةَ الكُبرى فكانت
طريفَ الفِكرِ والهِمَمِ التِلادا

27. And nerves that pull against adversities,
When they rage and overwhelm with burdens,

٢٧. وأعصاباً تَشُدُّ على الرَّزايا
إذا طاشَتْ وتَغلِبُها اتئادا

28. And when you were like the dawn shining,
"And like a doe, too proud to be hunted",

٢٨. ولمَّا كنتَ كالفجر انبلاجاً
" وكالعنقاء تكْبُرُ أنْ تُصادا"

29. You walked with a heart of solid mettle,
"Defiant of those whom you defy",

٢٩. مَشَيْتَ بقلبِ ذي لبَدٍ هَصورٍ
" تُعانِدُ من تُريدُ له العِنادا"

30. You shouldered the cross, unperturbed by fear,
Nor inclined to luxury, convening,

٣٠. صليبَ العُودِ ، لم يَغمزْكَ خَوفٌ
ولم تَسهُلْ على التَرفِ انعقادا

31. Nor did you concede to a tyrant's whims,
Or what he wished, intending,

٣١. ولم تَنزِلْ على أهواء طاغٍ
ولا عمَّا تُريدُ لمِا أرادا

32. Nor did I see among men one sustained,
By truth, pride and standing like you,

٣٢. ولم أرَ في الرجالِ كمُستَمِدٍّ
من الحقِّ اعتزازاً واعتدادا

33. And there were two camps: oppression reigning,
And the oppressed, you did not neutrally stand,

٣٣. وكان مُعسكرانِ : الظُلمُ يَطغى
ومظلومٌ ، فلم تَقفِ الحيِادا

34. You did not argue, the injustice was an army,
And its hordes individual,

٣٤. ولم تحتجَّ أنَّ البَغْيَ جيشٌ
وأنَّ الزاحفينَ له فُرادي

35. Nor that nights bring disgrace,
Nor that time is a foe, unforgiving,

٣٥. ولا أنَّ اللياليَ مُحرِجاتٌ
وأنَّ الدَّهَر خصمٌ لا يُعادى

36. And that the matter relies on a time,
That nears with no reconsidering,

٣٦. و أنَّ الأمرَ مرهونٌ بوقتٍ
ينادي حينَ يأْزَفُ لا يُنادى

37. Excuses armored weak souls,
Fearing firm adversity's blows,

٣٧. مَعاذيرٌ بها ادَّرَعَتْ نُفوسٌ
ضعافٌ تَرهبُ الكُرَبَ الشِّدادا

38. Seeking glory, falling upon them,
Fruit picked hastily in disdain!

٣٨. تُريدُ المجدَ مُرتميا عليها
جَنىً غَضّاً تَلَقَّفُهُ ازدِرادا!

39. Jamal al-Din, you were, and there was an East,
And a Law that sanctioned struggle,

٣٩. جمالَ الدينِ كنتَ وكانَ شَرقٌ
وكانتْ شِرعةٌ تَهَبُ الجْهادا

40. And a Heaven under the shadow of swords,
Individuals protected it forcefully,

٤٠. وكانت جَنَّةٌ في ظِلِّ سيفٍ
حَمَى الفَردُ الذِمارَ به وذادا

41. And faith that willingly led people,
To immolation, interpretively endeavoring,

٤١. وإيِمانٌ يقودُ الناسَ طَوعاً
إلى الغَمَراتِ فَتوىً واجتهادا

42. And people civilization did not corrupt,
Nor prolong with greed, trespassing,

٤٢. وناسٌ لا الحضارةُ دنَّسَتْهُمْ
ولا طالُوا مع الطَمَعِ امتِدادا

43. And there was an "unbreakable bond", adorned,
For the united, lovingly bonding,

٤٣. وكانت " عُروةٌ وُثْقَى " تُزَجَّى
لمنقَسِمينَ حُبّاً واتحادا

44. And the intention of leaders was laid bare,
And the face of politics made clear and purging,

٤٤. ونيَّةُ ساسةٍ بَسُطَتْ فبانت
ووجْهُ سياسةٍ جلَّى وكادا

45. And rule like the darkness, bare and pure,
So it did not deny when claiming lineage,

٤٥. وحُكْمٌ كالدَّجى عُريانُ صافٍ
فلم يُنْكِرْ ، إذا انتَسبَ ، السَّوادا

46. Nor cast any shadows of colors,
Seeking thereby diminution or increase,

٤٦. ولم يُدخِلْ من الألوانِ ظّلاً
يلوذُ به انتقاصاً وازْديادا

47. It forcibly prevailed and ruled loftily,
Proclaiming it ruled despite the unwilling,

٤٧. دَجَا قَسْراً وسادَ ، وكان شَهماً
صريحاً أنَّه بالرُّغمِ سادا

48. And you came, and comrades like stars,
To misguidance, in its endless wilderness, guiding,

٤٨. وجِئتَ ورُفقة لك كالدَّراري
لِضُلاَّلٍ بغَيْهَبِه ، رشادا

49. Repelling its darkness, facing it directly,
And charging it regressively, steadily,

٤٩. تَصُدُّ عُبابَهُ وجهاً لوجهٍ
وتَزْحَمُهُ انْعكاساً وَاطَّرادا

50. Jamal al-Din you were, and there was an era,
You were quenched when you endured firm,

٥٠. جمالَ الدينِ كنتَ وكانَ عهدٌ
سُقيتَ لما صمَدْتَ له العِهادا

51. It grew and strengthened and its nudity spread,
And the steadfast increasingly endured,

٥١. نَما واشتطَّ واشتدَّتْ عُراه
وزادَ الصامدونَ لهُ اشتدادا

52. Fifty spineless years passed after you,
Ravines, not streams, assisting them,

٥٢. مشَتْ خمسونَ بعدَك مرْخياتٍ
أعِنَّتَها ، هِجاناً لا جِياداً

53. Loaded and driven by immorality,
And resilient like an unassailable fortress,

٥٣. محَّملةً وسُوقاً من فُجورٍ
وشامخةً كَمُحصَنةٍ تهادى

54. Politics shifted from its scope,
To the furthest extent, meagerly preparing,

٥٤. تحوَّرَتِ السياسةُ عن مَداها
إلى أنأى مدىً وأقلَّ زادا

55. And the East spent its night secure,
Between two rules, differing in significance,

٥٥. وباتَ الشرق ليلَتَه سَليماً
على حالينِ ما اختَلَفا مُفادا

56. The essence of both being tyranny prevails,
And annihilation, he is free,

٥٦. على حُكْمين من شَفعٍ وَوتْرٍ
عُصارةُ كلّ ذلك أن ْ يُسادا

57. By whichever hand he prefers to perish!
And a finger extended to his kin therein,

٥٧. ولُطِّفَتِ الابادةُ ، فهو حُرٌّ
بأيِّ يَدٍ يُفَضِّلُ أنْ يُبادا!

58. Causing corruption beyond what they corrupted!
How many wounds in the East of a nation,

٥٨. ومُدَّتْ إصْبَعٌ لذويهِ فيهِ
فعاثَتْ فوقَ ما عاثُوا فَسادا!

59. Complaining, not of wounds, but of bandages!
Complaining of the despicable, hateful injustice,

٥٩. فكَمْ في الشَّرقِ من بَلدٍ جريحٍ
تشَكِّى لا الجروحَ بَلِ الضِّمادا!

60. That refused obediently to be led,
So the scheme was to mount it,

٦٠. تشَكَّى بَغيَ مُقتادٍ بغيضٍ
تأبَّى أنْ يُطاوعَه انقيادا

61. An infant whose milk teeth still bite and amplify,
Echoing the foreigner, and how many barrens,

٦١. فكانتْ حِيَلةٌ أنْ يَمْتَطيهِ
رضيعُ لِبانه فبغى وزادا

62. Returned an echo, thus he was gratified,
So the foreigner handed it to a compatriot,

٦٢. صَدىً للأجنبيّ ، ورُبَّ قَفْرٍ
أعادَ صدىً فَسُرَّ بما أعادا

63. Who subjugated it as he wished, persecuting,
And the foreigner, having assumed,

٦٣. وكان أجلَّ من زُمَرٍ إذا ما
تجَّنى المُستَبيحُ ، بها تفادى

64. The reins of command and usurped the homelands,
Saw the slightest rights upon him,

٦٤. فكانوا منه في العَوْراتِ سِتراً
وكانوا فوق جمرتهِ رمادا

65. Tolerating criticism and censure,
So they reckoned criticism an opening,

٦٥. تروَّى من مطامعهِ وأبقى
لهم من سُؤر ما وَرَدَ ، الثمادا

66. If only they could silence the critics!
Evil is the fate of fettered, disgraced slaves,

٦٦. وكان إذا تهضَّمهُ غريبٌ
أقامَ له القيامةَ والمعادا

67. If only their hands were not bound by shackles!
And evil is the fate of those lying on embers,

٦٧. فأسلَمَهُ الغريبُ إلى قَريبٌ
يسّخِرُهُ كما شاءَ اضطهادا

68. Wishing they lay on cushions!
They were like plants, relocated,

٦٨. وكان الأجنبيُّ وقد تَولَّى
زمام الأمرِ واغتَصَبَ البلادا

69. When rain irrigated, locusts swarmed!
What miserable destiny for the enchained humiliated,

٦٩. يرى أدنى الحُقوقِ لهمْ عليه
مُساغَ النقد والكلِم المُعادا

70. If only his hands were not restrained by shackles!
And how wretched is the fate of those lying on embers,

٧٠. فأضحوا يحسبونَ النقد فتحاً
لو اسطاعُوا لِما يَصِمُ انتِقادا

71. Wishing to lie on cushions instead!
They were like plants transplanted,

٧١. فبئسَ مُنىً لمصفودٍ ذليلٍ
لَوَ انَّ يَديه لم تضَعا الصِفادا

72. When the rain irrigated, locusts swarmed!
And when the foreigner took over,

٧٢. وبئسْ مَصيرُ مُفَترشينَ جمراً
تَمّنْيهم لو افترَشوا القَتادا!

73. The reins of power and usurped the homelands,
He saw the slightest rights upon him

٧٣. وكانوا كالزُّروعِ شََتْ مُحُولاً
فلمَّا استمْطرتْ مُطِرَتْ جرادا!
