1. He turned away from blaming though the sin is one,
And pardon the vicissitudes of fate for you cannot find them.

2. If your nearest, whom you are allied with, betrays you,
It is no wonder if those far away surrender you to captivity.

3. Do not suspect the events of the nights in anyone,
For people are either envious or hostile.

4. Disregard the water whose source is not pure,
The springs will not be unclear to you.

5. How often have I come upon a watering place spreading far,
Thirsty, yet I strained myself while the saliva was solid.

6. Do not think every water is potable,
Echoing the buckets and frequented by the drawers of water.

7. How many a brother, thirsty, died in the deep sea
With his bucket, while the waves crashed and settled.

8. If a country displeased you with the manners of its people,
Leave it, for no glorious one gets angry at defects.

9. Neither emigration from a land that suckled you with its milk,
Nor separation from it was a duty to you as a child.

10. Sometimes against separation and desolation,
A father, brother, or man who gives victory may suffice.

11. Cut off the ties of friendship from those you love
If they do not want all that you wish for.

12. And tell the nights whatever you wish, go ahead,
For against fate plots come.

13. Do not dread the grave event out of fear,
For the taste of death is one no matter how you experience it.

14. I regretted praising men and was pleased
That those poems contained censure before that.

15. It is right for the likes of me to die regretting
When those eulogies are recited among people.

16. Would that I knew! Do I socialize with young men
Whom Qais and Khalid nurtured to excellence?

17. Or does a group accompany me, having
A fresh aspect in every glory and birth?

18. They are men who do not know where their houses are,
Nor did their neighbors recognize what hardships are.

19. Fortune makes their hands generous with what is in their homes
While misfortunes gather in them the scattered destitute.

20. Their giving to the beseecher is thousands, while others,
When they give, their gifts are promises.

21. Advisors whom no ruse is attributed to
Nor is there among them one of an opposing scripture.

22. They are my brothers, company, and family,
And my people when plots stir me to action.

23. So if a group disliked me because of kinship
And I faced from their spontaneity what I endure,

24. Then the brothers previously sold their brother
For a pittance, while each of them in it is devout.

25. The sound opinion frequently misses the mark by the chaste
While the isolated pits give drink to those arriving.

26. O you of high resolve! How much forbearance for lowliness,
While in determination is a guide to the steeds and leader.

27. So let us harvest lives or reach our destiny
With resolve, for lives must have a reaper.

28. The one incapable is not crippled from attaining glory,
Indolent, called by the most high while asleep!

29. And in striving there is an excuse for the youth if
Endeavors become impossible or purposes dry up for him.

30. My friend! How long my nights are while my resolve
Hands me cups in succession while seriousness sits.

31. How I soliloquize to an ambition without realizing it
While the stars of Thurayya, Canopus, and others sleep.

32. And an affliction that befell me hinders me
From what I attempt, while time trips the serious one.

33. And evil brethren, if a disaster pains me,
Are its foundation and pillars.

34. They make me happy with what I am not happy with, and all of them
Are a defiant devil among the jinn against me.

35. They have made efforts for what harms me
While I was shooting arrows and struggling against them.

36. Would that leprosy and the pox of ‘Amr's son
Had intervened between me and them, a barrier.

37. And a blasphemer in God's oneness had fettered our hands
To treason, an unbeliever and rejecter.

38. Most amazing is that the sons of my father were
Husams to the one seeking to scourge and help against me.

39. The dearest of them, if I took shade one day in his shadow,
I saw poison while he was cold to the adversary.

40. The rest of them are either weak, and his weakness
Has an excuse, or hating me, struggling.

41. They are the ones who burdened me with disasters and
Ravening wolves from them tore at my flesh.

42. They left my side and land purposefully barren
Without hoping the rains would make it fertile.

43. And they rejoiced at my misfortune, enviously, and that
Is what glorious deeds do not sanction.

44. I have no fault but pearls of verse I strung
And crowns I refined for them and necklaces.

45. Yet I am jealous for their rank and ascent
While avoiding the rapture of glory.

46. I protect them from affairs managed by
Fins those not guided by rectitude divert.

47. Had they accepted repentance for that sin,
I would have given up forever repeating it.

48. So glory be to my Lord! How they changed! Their hearts
To me are rocky while their palms are frigid.

49. Neither can the heart be forgiving which I approach
Nor the palm be kind which I clasp.

50. O excellence! My waiting has been long while neither
Winter nor summer has visited one like you.

51. Excuses ran out - no barrier for traveling,
Nor the sea denied, nor the entrance corrupt.

52. You are not restricted in your disposal of gifts,
No watcher over your gifts lying in wait for you.

53. Among the generous sons of Fadl no miser is found,
For when horizons darken they are daring glorious ones.

54. Whence comes blame, O son of Muhammad,
While your glory in the House of Unayni grows?

55. Are you pleased that my conveyance animals set out in the morning
Bearing their loads, their saddles, and their litters?

56. Is it for the sake of my praise, or the sake of love for you,
Or because the house and effort are one?

57. So do not sever what affection is between us,
Kinship and poetry - for poetry is dead.

58. Do not forget what I attained in loving you,
And the striver gained it while the helper was little.

59. It is attested during life by Nizar and Urayb
With witnesses, and in the claim are oath and testimony.

60. I hoped to find in your company a condition
For which a jealous one would die of rage.

61. So dictate! Tell me what I should say to my family
For each person about news must be questioned.

62. All of them look to me with their eyes,
Thinking the planter of good will be the harvester.

63. No use in one from whom no benefit is hoped
When disaster strikes, and no profits are sought from him.

64. The man of glory is like the gold coin, and poetry a gem
With which the composer inlays, appraising.

65. No good in beautifully wrought engraving is a box
If, when rubbed, it is rejected by the rubbing palms.

66. Do not rely, O Fadl, in grace and gift
On an ancestor bestowed by effort and father.

67. No praise but for what a youth himself does,
Even if many a encomium in his forebears abound.

68. Be to me as my thinking of you, not a blamer's assumption
Warning me away from seeking you, for wealth expires.

69. Kinships are joined in the remoteness of your abode
And slave women bearing children relax in your kindness.

70. The attainment of one you recognize is not secret,
And does the sunlight in the land have a denier?

71. So live in security and survive and be saved from every sorrow,
Your company guarded and your kingdom eternal.
