1. What are we waiting for in seeking glory?
With what excuse do we justify ourselves to the exalted?

2. Neither are the elders drunks nor the fathers immoral.
Nor does your hesitance fall short of seeking the sublime.

3. How shameful is the inertia of your people and how much
the desires graze where there is no water or tree.

4. Seek for yourself a substitute for the abode of disgrace
for you have missed paradise though hellfire hasn’t escaped you.

5. Don’t you know that incapacity attracts
humility and servility unless overcome by fate?

6. Neither can magic protect the living from death
when it comes, nor incantations or amulets.

7. Nothing can dispel encroaching anxieties but
the text of scripture, the spirit of devotion, and innocence.

8. Remembrance revives it – either a downpour
of bounty or a firm reminder.

9. What a pity to spend a lifetime among scoundrels
who are satans in appearance and speech.

10. They do not exalt when honoured nor pardon when able.
Their closest neighbor wishes they would vanish without a trace.

11. I have been harmed by their callousness –
they have climbed the summit of villainy and descended.

12. Green are the eyes of Khazraj when their sights fall upon me;
that greenness does not leave them.

13. I blame them unjustly so the sun hides
its perception from their vision.

14. They have penetrating arrows in the darkness
unfeathered and whose bowstring does not vibrate.

15. How many charming youths have become
fearful and anxious by nightfall.

16. If they defeat me, let not their noses raise;
that victory is only for their enemies.

17. Ask which of them will guarantee my security when
the enemy's fire rises and brands fly?

18. Who will take my place on a day of tribulation
when no hearing remains to heed it nor sight to see it?

19. Who will fill my place on a day of battle
when the gazelle takes cover and twilight grows dim?

20. I will resolutely face the sword when I see it
like a cloak in heavy rain.

21. When I speak it is no vain talk or nonsense;
when silent, no defect or limit.

22. The steeds charge even when their bridles clatter;
do not be fooled by the hubbub beneath the armour.

23. I am amazed by people who saw my injustice as sweet
while pitch and steadfastness are more palatable.

24. Do they feel secure from my vengeance? They have no father
to protect them from my assault.

25. I am a man - if I bare the fang in anger
neither barrier nor estrangement prevents my might.

26. So let not a forbearance known of me deceive them -
fire can erupt when the flint is struck.

27. Let he whose foolishness is prolonged fear my might.
Much imminent evil is led by worse.

28. It is enough for me to disappoint those hopeful of me
while nights flow into further trials.

29. A people who when light shines for them
are like the abyss - it pleases the sight but bears no fruit.

30. O resemblers of a cloak in water, its growth
devoid of softness when wrung.

31. Do not blame me for sin in your precincts
for I am not the first traveller the moon has misled.

32. I did not think you were like walnuts -
goodness appears only when it splits open.

33. I turned away but did not regret your loss
nor did remoteness from you bring discomfort.

34. By God, my night was not prolonged in longing for you
nor did passion for you deprive me of sleep.

35. Indeed, since intentions parted me from you
and the journey stretched, I have been at peace.

36. How much bitterness do I drink aside from your palms
while only harm is expected from you, and no good.

37. Neither forbearance restrains you from injuring me
nor does my ignorance make me avenge.

38. So spare me your injuries before a scourge
comes that leaves nothing remaining or recovers.

39. And seek protection in pleasing me and beware provoking me
for my wound in the likes of you brings loss.

40. I am the one the tyrant fears his assault
and by whom the crooked of cheek are disciplined.

41. I ascend to the highest summit and am bred
by glories that know no decline in their staffs.

42. Open-handed, cheerful dispellers of grief, patient -
seeking at times of hardship, steadfast when abandoned.

43. Brave, zealous heroes - by their likes events
and chronicles become virtuous and excellent.

44. They do not leave a neighbor to the vagaries of fate
for a day nor does the seekers' reliance upon them wane.

45. How many blessings they have that cannot be disparaged -
neither boon accorded them nor any blame.

46. Fate does not coerce their wills in its course
nor does the passage of days coerce what they have rectified

47. Mountains of honor, lofty minarets, seas of dew,
strong lions, masters, unique pearls.

48. People do not deny their favors or that they
are the people of highness and pride when prideful.
