1. You are neither my serious concern nor my plaything
I have nothing but the lofty pride of my kinship

2. Do not increase your talk which adds to my discontent
My mother is not of noble descent nor is Wadi Al-Hasa my father's home

3. In every land where I make my abode a homeland
What is between the free man and the home of his ancestry?

4. O dwellers of the sands and groves of Hajar
Is your waiting for anything but ruin?

5. I complained of what I call upon you and mourn over
For the betterment of an altered state, not the worsening of one

6. So silence me with a word by which you don't betray
I have become content with a promise from you, even if it's a lie

7. The foolish brother blames me for leaving you
More rightfully than the milker of the west and wastelands

8. God is most generous that I remain thus withdrawn
Between you due to the turns of fate and vicissitudes of time

9. I have vast scope away from the abodes of harm and humiliation
Not every house is a shelter of woe and war

10. Do not attribute me to a lineage among you
Soil is just soil, though gold takes root in it

11. Do not reckon my dislike of homelands stems from boredom
Love and hate must have a cause

12. Scarcity, humiliation, abandonment, the tyranny of an enemy
Are the station of my like - how strange!

13. When dishonor overwhelms you in the homelands
Leave it to the weak-willed and emigrate

14. Enough for me are a sword, armor
And a polished blade, sharp of edges

15. And a mare of excellent stock, crying out
Who knows no pace but charge and leap

16. I imagine after a five day journey, her scent
Pervading, having lost the lead of those of noble stock

17. I will seek heights with the striving of a valiant youth
Who tramples with determination the forelocks of lions

18. If I attain, then by my own effort what I attained
Otherwise, I will have excused myself in the quest

19. Woe to spending a lifetime in a land
Whose people's ill omens are more maleficent than scabies

20. No glorious master to protect their guarantees
Esteemed among them, nor free man, brother of refinement

21. My wealth, body, hearing, mouth, sight
And thoughts - all are exhausted by their affliction

22. My plea, O Lord, inspire the Lord of our state
To raise us to the highest of ranks from the lowest

23. Is it really so that I remain thus, a follower,
When my station in the heights is the most noble of stations?

24. One who hopes for the changing of the state will not attain my friendship
Nor will he who inclines towards me escape my wrath

25. I see the heights requiring me, not weakening
A determination making clear my merit and lineage

26. And I rose up for it except that weakness of resolve impeded me
And the betrayal of my people and the ravages of time upon my purpose

27. A man strives without comrades or ancestry
Like an arrow shot without fletching or notch

28. My days are hastened if I do not conquer their setting suns
Is there really no escape from anxiety and tribulation?

29. My ambitions say to me, "Leave this abode and rise"
But comfort of body is only found in fatigue

30. And aspire in your praise to none but the scion of glory
Nurtured to power from your noble ancestors

31. Crowned, of the house of ‘Abdali, when his lineage ascends
To the best of fathers, if called, and the best of forebears

32. From the family of excellence, builders of glory, you know him
All the tribes, from tracing lineage and drawing near

33. Who strikes terror on the day you see the shining sun
Disappear though it has not disappeared

34. And those who assault the tyrant, toppling his dome
With relentless courage, lacking fear or awe

35. And those who, when a north wind blows
Uprooting the cornerstones of the house with logs

36. They built glories for them, excellences erected
By Abu Sinan, foe of non-Arab and Arab

37. And Ahmad his son, the king who denied
Between Nazwa his citadels up to Aleppo

38. And Majid who was an excellent ally to call
When the caller to war called but none responded

39. And of those, when his fatherhood is reckoned
There is no reaching his excellence and pedigree

40. And he who is Abu Shukr, his successor, did not die
Eclipsing the full moon and covering the clouds

41. With precedence, like his name, in every honor
So if an age brings you low, call him and he will respond

42. And where is the like of Abu Shukr when the fires of turmoil blaze
And the plundered seek refuge from plunder?

43. He who routs battles, under the dust cloud you see
The striking of his horses like the striking of fire into brushwood

44. The heroes do not fear his might on a day of turmoil
Save by grasping the reins of his steed or fleeing

45. If the sword had his determination on the day of panic
The white blades would have no significance or value

46. If the lion of the thicket had his support
His dwelling would not be in the thicket and canebrakes

47. If the sun was created from the light of his aura
It would not disappear from sights into the veils

48. If the sea was steeped in his perfections
It would be more pungent to the nostrils than brine

49. He ascended the throne without any decline in his administrative capacity
And resolved its highest positions, the best of ranks

50. Easygoing, praiseworthy in conduct, pure truth
Quick to anger against cowardliness, poured on the stupid

51. Determined, returning by his resolution
The deserter, attacker against the vicissitudes of time

52. His day is a day of dew and overwhelming
Not a day of revelry and distraction

53. Who pierces the horses with every spear-thrust
Well-aimed and straight, healing from dog-nature

54. Who abandons the spear in the sand drifting
With a blow that preceded from him in wrath

55. Who gives successive red assaults followed
By their results in hoary years full of renown

56. Who hosts guests at mountainous feasts, delighted
By the jellied meat, not what is tasted in tin boxes

57. A spirit whose Creator has forbidden it indignity refuses him
Not like the souls, and a stock not of the malignant

58. An eagle against the valiant hero from a lion
Against zebras and a falcon against ruins

59. O son of exalted kings who built their realms
With bow bags and the Khati script on slipcovers

60. Succession of the house of Abraham has reared you, every
Cultured youth, pure of traits and chosen

61. What glories of kingship are there in your fatherhood
Girded with glory, clinging to the crown

62. None remain but you, so remember what will be said tomorrow
And if you intend with weakness of will then trace your ancestry

63. Do not incline towards one without loyalty
The wolf by nature will leap if he is able

64. Do not scorn those of intellect
The insightful can divert a stream with the west wind

65. And anticipate the harm of an enemy from the direction of its occurrence
For sometimes an unanticipated matter comes to pass

66. And beware deferring a righteous deed until tomorrow
For how many tomorrows have passed, their days gone, and not returned

67. And extend the hands of one with overflowing virtue in authority by which
You can restrain what turns aside from its bow lest it strike

68. So overflowing, neither treacherous nor complacent
In creation nor weak nor blundering

69. Firmest of companionship and most concealing it
When meeting, and most protective of pedigree

70. To you a gem from the nature of its speaker
Remaining over passing eras and epochs

71. It will be said to the pretender to poetry rivalling it
"You lie! The Talhi meter is not like Talhi meter!"

72. You remain in a state whose enemies suffer misery
Protecting the friend and called Remover of Afflictions
