1. He who preserves affection is more deserving
Of beautiful praise, in this life and the next
١. اِنّ من يحفظ المَوَدّة أَحرى
بِالثَناءِ الجَميلِ دُنيا وَأَحرى
2. And the noble, authentic person grows in stature
And propriety, when he forgives misdeeds
٢. وَالنَبيل الاصيل يَنمو وٌَارا
وَاِحتِشاما مِن حَيثُ يَغفِر وزرا
3. The intelligent, cultured one, of reason and excellence
Deception does not last with him, it fades away
٣. وَاللَبيب الاديب ذو العَقل وَالفَض
ل لَدَيه التَمويه لَم يَستَمِرّا
4. By my life, you deserve this glory and greatness
We have never deprived you of time's gifts
٤. وَلَعُمري أَنتَ الجَدير بِهذا المَ
جد وَالسودد المعظم قدرا
5. O marvel of the age, beautiful in rhyme and meaning
Your position narrates the era's poetry
٥. لا عدمنا لك الزَمان عَطايا
مغد قات وُدّا عَلَينا وَبِرّا
6. You have a place in hearts, in glory, and where pride resides
You have revealed your chest as a leader
٦. يا بَديع الزَمان حسنا وَمَعنى
وَمَقاما حَكى الزَمان وَشِعرا
7. You have the praise which suits a good lineage
With branches that revive the roots and fame
٧. وَلَكَ الصَدر في القُلوب وَفي العِ
ز وَحَيثُ الفخار جَليت صَدرا
8. I do not forget your merits that have adorned
Our poems with fresh, glistening pearls from you
٨. وَلَكَ المحتد الَّذي طابَ غَرسا
وَفروعا تحيى الاصول وَذِكرا
9. With them we have reached lofty heights and attained
Refined morals, prominence, and pride
٩. لَست أَنسى فَضائِلا مِنكَ حلت
جيد اَلبا بنا من النظم درّا
10. How can I bear the load of gratitude
For your virtues that speak without need for words
١٠. قَد سَمَونا بها المَعالي وَنِلنا
أَدَبا باذِخا وَجاها وَفَخرا
11. Creation's hues declare unambiguously
That none but you deserve to be thanked
١١. كَيفَ أَقوى الحَمل أَعبا مَشكر
لأيا ديك وَالمَحاسن تَترا
12. May God purify your youth, and you remain
A treasure for your students, their pride
١٢. فَلوان الوجود يَنطِق حدا
لَم يَكُن في سِواك يعلن شُكرا
13. And may God protect you and grant you
All the hopes and triumph you wish from Him
١٣. طهر اللَه أَصغريك وَلا زِل
ت لطلابك الا ماجد ذخرا
14. Be as you wish, I am servant of God
Seeking to be accepted by you, openly or discreetly
١٤. وَحباك الاله كل رَجاء
ترتجيه مِنه وَعزا وَنَصرا
15. My utmost goal is to gain acceptance
From your generous nature, inwardly and outwardly
١٥. كن كَما شِئت اِنَّني لك عَبد اللَه
عبد فهل أَفوز بِبشرى
16. Consider the heart of the matter, you will see
My love is true, and I am fascinated by you
١٦. غايَة القَصد ان أَفوز بتقبي
ل بديك الكِرام بطنا وَظهرا
17. This is my integrity and pact
And my loyalty, as long as I'm alive, in public or seclusion
١٧. وَتَأَمّل في باطِن الامر تَنظر
صدق وُدّي وَأَنَّني بك مغرى
18. So trust it and leave those mischief-makers
You know best what they have done
١٨. هذه خلتي وَذَمّة عَهدي
وَوَفائي ما دمت سِرّا وجهرا
19. Or forgive me as you assumed, far be it from me
O beard of God, an evildoer amongst us
١٩. فَاِعتَمِدها وخلّ عَنك بغاة
فبما كان مِنهم أَنتَ أَدري
20. Has caused trouble and confused our thoughts
He has exaggerated talk and listen to me
٢٠. أَو فهبنى كما ظننت وحاشا
ك ميأ فها أنا جئت أَبرا
21. He has transgressed in blaming and being mean
You were deceived when he came to you gently
٢١. يا لحى اللَه كل واش نَموم
قَد سَعى بَينَنا وَكدّر فِكرا
22. If you had considered his nature, you'd have found him toxic
But in any case, may God not show me
٢٢. نمق القَول وَاِستَما لك عنا
وَتَعَدّى في لَومه وَتجرّا
23. Separation from you, my master, after this
So forgive, forgive, O joy of the time
٢٣. غرة منك حين وافاك لين
لَو تَأَمّلت خلته مكفهِرّا
24. And garden of knowledge, prose, and verse
Show kindness and grant me a beautiful pardon
٢٤. وَعَلى كل حالَة لا أَراني الله
من بعد سيدي منك هجرا
25. For a lover unable to show patience without you
Accept me and care for me as you did
٢٥. فَالسَماح السَماح يا بَهجَة الوَقت
وَرَوض العُلوم نُظما وَنثرا
26. And leave me be, from those who feign greatness
Spread the coolness of affection and race
٢٦. وَتلطف وَاِمنن بصفح جَميل
عَن مُحِب لم يَستَطِع عَنكَ صَبرا
27. To hoist the banner of reunion
Plead innocence for me, since I have been
٢٧. وَاِرض عَني وَراعني مِثل ما كن
ت وَدَعني مِمَّن توشح كبرا
28. Enslaved by the hands of youth forcibly
Your eyes have surrendered me to madness
٢٨. وَاِطو برد الصدود وَاِستَبِق صَبا
لِلواء الوِصال يَطلب نَشرا
29. So turning away increases my heart's agony
They have filled my love with sorrows and tempted
٢٩. وَالتمس لي بَراءَة حَيث اني
أَسرتني يد الصَبابَة قَسرا
30. The heart of the enamored to deride me
Who could sing the praises of the full moon properly
٣٠. أَسلَمتَني اِلى الجُنون عيون
فَاِتكاب تَزيد قَلبي كسرا
31. If he made it last a month or an era?
Wondrously, God has grown in his cheek a flower
٣١. مَلأت مُهجَتي نبالا وَأَومت
فَاِستَمالَت لبّ المتيم سخرا
32. While in my heart there is a burning ember
My devotional eye has left me in its passion for him
٣٢. من أَغَنّ لَو كانَ لِلبَدر جز
من سَناه أَقام شَهرا وَدَهرا
33. Yet upon him I see frivolity as a veil
Exalted is he whose beauty is protected
٣٣. وَعَجيب قَد أَنبت اللَه في خَدّ
يه زهرا وَفي فُؤادي جَمرا
34. Pure, pristine, chaste, and tempting
Or he has attained beauty, condition and words
٣٤. عَين نسكي خلا عَني في هَواه
وَعَليهِ أَرى التَهَتُّك سَترا
35. Of noble lineage, glory and pride
And my passion for him, my master, is my excuse
٣٥. جلّ من صانه مَصون جمال
طيبا طاهرا زكيا أَغَرّا
36. And passion from me is enough of an excuse for you
Its beauty has expressed, though it is an excuse
٣٦. أَو جدى الجَمال وَالحال وَالقا
ل عَريق الاصول مجدا وَفَخرا
37. So please accept it, and gently place it
Upon your chest, for it longs for your scent
٣٧. وَغَرامي يا سيدي فيه عذرى
وَكَفاكَ الغَرامُ مني عُذرا
38. May God increase your rise of each sun
With blessings that leave the envious remorseful
٣٨. هاكَ ذاتَ الجَمال مني عُروبا
أَعرَبت عن جَمالِها وَهي عُذرا
39. Then may each supreme being call you - bless me
For he who preserves affection deserves reward
٣٩. فَتَفضل وَراعِها بِقبول
فهي بكر تود صدرك خدرا
٤٠. زادَك اللَه كل مَطلع شَمس
نعما تَترك الحواسِد حسرى
٤١. ثَم نادَتك كل علياء صلني
اِن من يحفظ المَوَدّة أَجرا
