1. Stop at the dwellings though the tears are flowing
And weep for the ruins though the tribe has marched on

2. You were left behind, so weep as the camel litter
Drags its trailing skirts with a bier on its back

3. It wanders freely as though the journey has eased it
Yet its extremities, O my friend, are strings drawn taut

4. It circles in pain, filled with longing, no wonder
Beasts of burden can sometimes show wings in flight

5. Lost from the watering holes, turning from the pasture
No home left for it, though home be ordained and bound

6. Its guts within are shriveled, wasted
Adorned only by the red dye of its girth

7. Do not be shy of sorrow if grief assails you
Not even if in your course it is Sañjar brings this grief

8. Ever since it came to me, signs of joy have filled me
A wondrous people, whose fame the world sings loud

9. Noble souls, highest ranked among all mankind
Each one fenced about, of worth firmly defined

10. Proud in glory, their natures now purified
The least of them, attacked, a roaring lion in war

11. Dark blue their raiment, their creed one of courage
Before God they stand, countless are His true helpers

12. Seas of munificence, in their precincts
Guests find largesse, swords have their measure prescribed

13. Oceans of knowledge, their virtues utter perfection
Treasuries of truth and enlightenment, pious and just

14. Monks of the night, ask them and they will reveal it
Dawn songs, dusk songs, that bring virgin songs to your ears

15. They have built their homes by God's book, nothing profane
No flute girl dances, no wail of pipes stirs the air

16. By their own glory they are content, for their lord
Is he who gave glory to country and town

17. Muhammad is he, at each rank having his impress
His signs and his marks are the true guide for all

18. Lamp of grace he, and by him men find their way
As if on his head there glowed a brand, a towering flame

19. A moon shedding light on the land, bringing joy everywhere
On its tracks, rays to illumine the dark

20. Treasure raising the pearl flag aloft, how many
Eyes found their sight by the light that he sparked

21. For he is breast filled with wisdom, his protection
Has caused many a house to be richly adorned

22. A trove, knowledge's wealth past all counting within
No coin or dinar weighs up to his store

23. Unerring guide, no likeness resembles
Ask the seasons, they grant him fathomless lore

24. Quintessence of truth, bounties streaming behind him
Refuge for those whom no cavern could guard

25. Essence of earth, its treasure and very best part
Succor for those whom no friend could award

26. A sea whom the rivers are merely the drops that it casts
So quaff from the sea if the streams leave you parched

27. Best prophet, cavern of refuge for those
Whom ignorance drives into wrongdoing and sin

28. He is haven for those whom misfortune has shaken
Borne down by a burden no shoulders can bear

29. So I yearn for him, misfortune's claws in my skin
Raking deep with the slash of its talons

30. Set me free of its grip, let my skin be spared
Protect me, God protects all that we fear

31. Lift from me with your truth this affliction
My heart is afire and my body is seared

32. Most precious the prayer that is said o'er the tomb
That has brought revelations beyond all compare

33. Peace on the house, for in it lies he
Whom God chose above all others, peace be there
