1. The banner of sovereignty flies open for you,
And your victorious sword is famed.

2. For you the banners of glory descend
From every bright star, and you have become victorious.

3. You sought sovereignty, so its burdens yielded to you
As if kingship lay captured in your grasp.

4. Until your domain encompassed the Mansion of Gemini
Below its sublime seven degrees.

5. Your perfections eclipsed perfections,
As the light of dawn eclipses the shining sun.

6. You see the morn of truth shine brilliantly,
As if split open at its sides by its light.

7. And so tyranny is routed from the bosom of justice,
While the hearts of unjust rulers are broken.

8. Your squadrons in every region
Are lions led on by the auspicious suns.

9. From every blessed white star its influence appears to you
An ocean whose tides the fates follow.

10. And a heavy shower pours down, covering everything,
Like rain, saturating every place.

11. The mighty seven planets marched at your command—if
The sublime seven above commanded, “Walk on!”

12. A falcon hunting prey while the other birds
Are sparrows fluttering in fright.

13. Your swords weep their laughter
Like lightning and clouds stirred by the wailing winds.

14. Your troops attack with ferocity and rise high;
Whoever contends with them is shattered.

15. You meet battalions with resolve and leave them
As the tearful eyes of the wounded weep for them at dawn.

16. Ask the Persian horses when they retreated
With your army circled around them like a wall.

17. His words between them proved true, as did
Their minds, while the hearts of swords grew drunk.

18. Death does not escape in terror or exhaustion,
For fate comes when it must.

19. They lay dead upon the earth while the beasts
Feasted on them at will.

20. His palm melts the mighty with its power
While his other palm comforts the people.

21. A fire for whoever seeks to harm him,
Yet for one who desires peace, a light.

22. A lion and rain in times of woe and ease,
Poison and honey, ruin and elixir for the afflicted.

23. O source of grace, O you whose deeds are beautiful,
May the auspicious bird be celebrated!

24. You gave sincere advice to bring glory
Without any deception or shortcoming.

25. You became the defender and shield
Of the splendid state—yes, that palm and shield!

26. Until the caliph chose you as his desired one,
For in you lies the people’s well-being.

27. So he gave you the Zawra’ kingdom, which rejoiced,
And Baghdad, so oppression and tyranny disappeared.

28. And he added Basra the Fragrant, so it opened up
To relief and good omens.

29. You walked the path of glory happily
Among the nobles, surrounded by the masses.

30. Ill omens befell those who opposed you; they died,
While your vast abode routed the Persians.

31. So rejoice in the imminent conquest and victory
That delights the pure religion of Islam!

32. Spread over the Zawra’ city from your raincloud
Just rule, thereby advising and directing.

33. Justice has come to you joyous,
With no rival among the beautiful nymphs and maidens.

34. It came to congratulate you on what
God granted you—recite Ya Sin and Mount Sinai!

35. So welcome it and welcome it well with kindness and honor,
That you may remain rewarded and thanked.

36. It turned its eyes to you, recording
The flag of righteousness raised over the Zawra’ land.
