1. Regret over regret, though not unseemly,
The elder grieves for the junior beloved.

10. We hurry towards some final hour,
Each preceding the other in his shroud.

11. O you who preceded without reaching death
Rejoice, you're close to your Lord on high!

12. You tasted life's sweetest sips
And left before the bitterest drops.

13. You left me grieving still for you
And for your father - endless sorrow!

14. If a single teardrop fell from my eye
It would spare the rain from pouring.

15. If it doesn't water your grave, it will water
The heart of the bereaved companion.

16. O he for whose fleeing youth I cried,
My crying over my vanishing youth suffices!

17. Life itself is but our youth; once gone
I'm dead though not physically interred.

18. We've no need of preachers' eloquence,
For the mute corpse is the clearest warner.

19. This orator calls loudly o'er the graves
While the bier itself is his pulpit.

20. O sleepers, awake! Cast off your slumber
Which diverted every wise man.

21. To the dead, the state that's come is known;
The living knows not what is to come.
