1. Today benevolence, generosity and nobility died
When steps faltered in the way of God

2. Rufa'il al-Ubaydi died so his pillars crumbled
His glory not to crumble again

3. His effects remain in Egypt enduring
As long as the pyramids of Giza endure

4. Indeed the generous whose praises are recounted
Alive and dead, by people's tongues and pens

5. He who was a pillar cried for aid
Among the house of Jesus, raising his prestige among nations

6. Wealth ennobles people, and through him
Wealth was ennobled as bounty flowed

7. He passed away, owning no more than a shroud
Wrapped in cheap fabric, with worms crowding over him

8. No good in a life for people followed by
Death, nor in existence followed by oblivion

9. The earth distinguishes lord from servant
And under it lord and servant become equal

10. Few in his house resembled him
In his grave, resemblance to him is by ruins

11. Lying with his palm paralyzed
His speech muted, his hearing deafened

12. A great pillar collapsed in Egypt so
Arabs and non-Arabs shook from its terror

13. Egypt roared at his death and its plains roared
And ash-Sham roared so its dunes rumbled

14. He is the famous one whose fame
Suffices you from describing him, so words are spared

15. One who did not see him did not miss news of him
Both are split between all people

16. Every hopeful weeps for you O son of Ubayd
Who made tranquility a gain

17. A school you built weeps for you and flourishes
In a paradise, a palace in you smiles

18. Piety, goodness, benevolence, forbearance and manners weep for you
Chastity clung to you like the chosen vessel

19. So you held to God's rope firmly
O God's mercy, dawn upon

20. A generous face with God's light wrapped around
And greet soil made fragrant by his rest

21. Greeted by gentle, hidden zephyrs
And give glad tidings that Rufa'il

22. Trusted among angels, hymns have rung for him
As his virtuous qualities began,

23. So did his outcome conclude with virtue
