1. When dawn breaks I see the men
As I saw the ghosts in the night
١. إذا طَلَعَ النَّهارُ أرَى الرِّجالا
كما أبصَرْتُ في اللَيلِ الخَيالا
2. And I wonder how the earth can contain people
If gathered, they would be mountains
٢. وأعجَبُ كيفَ تَطوِي الأرضُ ناساً
لوِ اجتَمَعوا بها كانوا جِبالا
3. The flow of time copies every living thing
Like the sun's light when it erased the shadows
٣. كُرُورُ الدَّهرِ يَنسَخُ كلَّ حيٍّ
كُنورِ الشَّمسِ إذ نَسَخَ الظِّلالا
4. People pass one after another
As arrows shot from a bow
٤. تَمُرُّ الناسُ شخصاً بعدَ شَخصٍ
كما تَرمِي عنِ القَوسِ النِّبالا
5. If you close the door of death
It will find a thousand doors to enter
٥. إذا أغلَقتَ دُونَ المَوتِ باباً
تَناوَلَ ألفَ بابٍ كيفَ جالا
6. And those who avoid death on the right
It goes around them and takes them from the left
٦. ومَن حَذِرَ المَنيَّةَ عن يَمينٍ
تَدُورُ بهِ فتأخُذُهُ شِمالا

Greetings of peace from God upon the Prince
٧. منَ اللهِ السَّلامُ على أميرٍ
دَفَنَّا المجدَ مَعْهُ والجَلالا
8. With whom we buried glory and majesty
As if death did not dare confront him
٨. كأنَّ المَوتَ لم يجسُرْ عليهِ
مُجاهَرةً ففاجأهُ اغتِيالا
9. So it took him suddenly by assassination
A young man like a terrifying, cutting sword
٩. فَتىً كالسَّيفِ إرهاباً وقَطْعاً
ومِثْلُ الرُّمحِ قَدّاً واعتِدالا
10. And like a spear, straight and balanced
And like the full moon in radiance and beauty
١٠. ومثلُ البَدرِ إشراقاً وحُسناً
ومِثلُ الغَيثِ جوداً وابتِذالا
11. And like rain in generosity and abundance
The most noble father and grandfather of the generous
١١. أجَلُّ بني الكِرام أبّاً وجدَاً
وأكرَمُ رَهْطِهم عَمَّاً وخالا
12. And the most generous uncle of his clan
The best of them in deed and the most beautiful
١٢. وأحسنَهُم وأجمَلهُم فَعالاً
وأوثَقُهم وأصدَقُهم مَقالا
13. The most faithful and the most truthful in word
A generous man from generous stock
١٣. كريمٌ من كريمٍ من كِرامٍ
بَنَوْا في المجدِ أعمِدةً طِوالا
14. Who built pillars of glory
If the genealogist counts their horsemen
١٤. إذا عَدَّ النَّقيبُ لَهُمْ سَرَاةً
بَبيِتُ بجَهْدِهِ يشكو الكَلالا
15. He tires counting yet complains of few
Grandson of the Prince proclaiming
١٥. سَليلُ أميرِ لُبنانَ المُنادي
أنا لُبنانُ لَمَّا مِلتُ مالا
16. I am Lebanon though I dislike wealth
If you say the Prince without naming him
١٦. إذا قُلتَ الأميرُ ولم تُسمِّي
فلا يَحتاجُ سامعُكَ السُؤَالا
17. The listener need not even ask
We called him the Prince but did not do him justice
١٧. دَعَوناهُ الأميرَ فما وَفَينا
ولو قُلنا الوَزيرُ لَما استحَالا
18. Had we said Minister, it would not have matched
We asked the wise if any could compare
١٨. سألْنا تَخْتَ مَعْنٍ عن نَظيرٍ
لهُ هل قامَ فيهِ فقالَ لا لا
19. He said no, no, none his equal
The countries and its people will mourn him
١٩. ستَندبُهُ البِلادُ ومَنْ عَلَيها
إلى أنْ تَستَعِيضَ لهُ مِثالا
20. Until they find one to take his place
And people recount all his deeds
٢٠. وتُحصِي النَّاسُ ما فَعَلَتْ يَداهُ
ولكنْ بعدَ أنْ تُحصِي الرِّمالا
21. After counting the grains of sand
We accepted those who succeeded him
٢١. رَضينا بالذين تَخَلَّفُوهُ
فما رَضِيَ الزَمانُ ولا أقالا
22. Though neither fate nor time approved
Nor did the Friend leave us a Hilal
٢٢. ولا تَرَكَ الخليلَ لنا شِهاباً
ولا تَرَكَ السَّعيدَ لنا هِلالا
23. Nor did Sa'eed leave us a Crescent moon
For you, O Sa'eed, some people's eyes
٢٣. لِعَينِكَ يا سعيدُ عُيُونُ قومٍ
سَفَكنَ منَ الجُفُونِ دَماً حَلالا
24. Shed permitted tears from their lids
Today you wore a robe of pure white
٢٤. لَبِستَ اليومَ ثوباً من بَياضٍ
فزادَ جَمالَكَ الباهي جَمالا
25. Increasing your beautiful beauty
To the abode of bliss you went quickly
٢٥. إلى دارِ السَّعادةِ سِرتَ فَوْراً
كأنّكَ عاشقٌ يَبغِي الوِصالا
26. As if an eager lover seeking union
You saw life in this world as a path
٢٦. رأيتَ العيشَ في الدُّنيا طريقاً
لَها فاخَترْتَ أقرَبَهُ مَجالا
