2. Sweet of features, white of skin that when
The breeze blows upon it, it gently sways

3. The magic of the dawn charms loversʼ eyes
Through the enchantments of Babylon it regales

4. The slain of love are made lawful
When its judge rules at dawn in their eyes

5. Why, O arch of my eyes without a bowstring
Does the heart pierce with the arrows of the eyelids aiming

6. Appointed among shooting stars my watcher
So that even in slumber my eyes struggle to glimpse

7. Precious were my tears I had stored
Yet when separationʼs day came I sold them cheap

8. So my lashes fell scattering pearls
Adorning farewell and partingʼs agony

9. O you who waters cheeks with the water of youth
Wonʼt you pity the afflicted with yearning so water him

10. O grape picker, you came to steal me
When the scorpions of your cheeks went harvesting

11. Wild rose on the garden of your cheek gives off fragrance
As did your smile where coquetry resides

12. The green narcissi of your eyes, the vipers
Of twisted locks have not ceased to protect

13. I cannot conceal my passion, my confidant
My tears expose it, they flow from my hands

14. My tears reveal my secret though the guard
For tears are spies that secrets never escape

15. Who can bring me a phantom, a mirage of you
To visit me, my longing heart would be enough for him

16. Where can a specter in the midst of estrangement come
Who isnʼt accustomed to frowns and languishing find company?

17. Who can avoid the morning drafts of passion?
Wise is he who avoids its cold chills

18. Why is my side deserted at night without company?
Surely because the gazelle has forsaken

Wherever I turn, its glances caution

20. However much its eyes squint in passage
Fearing the critic it shields and conceals

21. I described beauty in the pillow, nothing of its art
Meaning left except that it now contains

22. In the gazelleʼs eyes a piercing sword
And in its cheek a crescent moon glowing

23. A smile like lightning burst forth
Distracted by beauty, vanity surrendered

24. To you belong the eyes whose kohl when applied
Often takes your mind, at times gives it life

25. Though the sickness in your eye was honest
It rivals in sharpness the polished sword

26. Do you feign this illness or are you truly ill
I suffer from both out of my ardor

27. If I say you are sick, it would betray me
For I see you in the morning well and healthy

28. Or if I say you pretend out of mischief
Sickness does not befit the body of one so young

29. Blamer of the ardent lover, declare him mad
And forbid him, though blame only increases his folly

30. So, declare in both cases hearing you blame
From you is enough though you reproach and accuse

31. Brighter than the full moon he shines
His brightness surpassing his years in its shine

32. More agreeable than fine wine his saliva
He gives freely though drinks are less kind

33. Cruel of heart, soft of cheek one day he will
Break hearts that pine for one so serene

34. Arise, give me a drink, do not mix that sweet wine
For saliva is sweeter than wine I'm made to imbibe

35. So the wine that mingles with saliva from his mouth
Is most sweet to the palate and agreeable to taste

36. O days of play how sweet you were
When the cold of youth melted into delight

37. As though the dawn had frosted its buds
With an eternal celebration born of the night

38. A branch grew though its origin was of virtue
When Musa ibn Ja'far the highest hopes made thrive

39. He brought goodness to the land with open hand
And the good shepherd all horizons kept safe

40. He whose glory the ages still sing
Whose generosity made grasping hands trains

41. A man of ambition who won endless praise
Though joining it one day to his glories would dim them

42. His fire lit the dark night of doom
And the sparks of glory now crown glory's summit

43. When lost the path of hope one day
The flames of glory rise up to guide them

44. Though the Russian mountains loom high
In pride, his virtues still greater in esteem

45. He who in time's gatherings complaints disperses
With his cures for the noblest of every land

46. If the temple of glory's court he enters
In knowledge's light his brilliance gleams

47. The burden of duty has not weakened him
It was light though brings others to their knees

48. O you in whom hopes are now made anew
Who for those who petition spreads goodness wide

49. He is Jaʻfar's son, in times of crises and need
A refuge, a shelter for the desolate soul

50. Building for truth and knowledge, lofty home
His father before judged rightly therefore built

51. He met the test, embodying excellence crowned
With no equal other sons of men provide

52. Sterile has been the mother of all glories
No second son with gifts so blessed

53. Carefree though wisdom supports his stature
As he sips the wine of ink his lineage supplies

54. Deaf if you call him not in your troubles
Heʼll answer ere you call, with triumph to guide

55. For those hopeful, abundant honey he reaps
And for envious, a poison festers inside

56. A suckling child who the milk of knowledge drank
From the flowing stream of wisdom has not weaned

57. Strange, that what fate decrees he should accept
Without objection though it burdens some

58. With him high hopes have spread
A sheltering hand for those who troubles rend

59. This is Jaʻfar's son whether in ease or unrest
A helping hand for the hopeful petitioner
