1. And how often with great vigor to the fray
I rushed expecting no return save Noble deeds,
١. وَرُبَّ مَصاليتٍ نَشاطٍ إِلى الوَغى
سِراعٍ إِلى الداعي كِرامِ المَقادِمِ
2. Plunged them into wars' tides - my hopes were set
On heavenly gain, not any earthly meeds.
٢. أَخَضتُهُمُ بَحرَ الحِمامِ وَخُضتُهُ
رَجاءَ الثَوابِ لا رَجاءَ المَغانِمِ
3. My sons, for us the prize was to be won
By doing right, all else we scorned and spurned.
٣. فَأُبنا وَقَد حُزنا الثَوابَ وَلَم نُرِد
سِوى ذاكَ غُنماً وَاِبتِناءِ المَكارِمِ
