My beloved ignored me
عدنا فى زماننا
Roses are red, violets are blue, I don't speak Arabic, so I cannot translate for you.
فراق أخلائى الذين عهدتهم
My friends whom I knew well are gone
لعب الهوى بمعالى ورسومى
Love toyed with my meanings and forms
نحن والله فى زمان غشوم
We are, by God, in a gloomy time
صداع من كلامك يعترينا
Your words give us a headache
لو اننى مسعطي
If I were Maga'i
متنبيكم ابن سقاء كوفا
Mutanabbi, son of a water-carrier in Kufa
عجائب فى زمانك شاهدات
Wonders in your time witnessed
أعد الورى للبرد جندا من الصلا
The land prepared an army of ice
أأبا رياش يا قبيح المنظر
O Abu Riash, ugly of appearance
فقصارهن مع الهموم طويلة
Their nights are long with worries
نفسى تقيك ابا الهيذام كل أذى
My soul yearns to spare you, Abu Al-Heitham, from all harm
لا مكث الله دنيانا فقيمتها
God does not let a world remain
فديتك لو علمت ببعض ما بى
I would sacrifice myself if you knew some of what is in me
لعنتم جميعا من وجوه بليدة

نبئت أن ابا رياض قد حوى
I was told that Abū Riyāḍ has comprehended
ان أصبحت هممى فى الافق عالية
If my aspirations in the horizon grew high
هل طالب ثار من قد أهدرت دمه
Does the avenger of spilt blood demand payment
أقول لعصبة بالفقه صالت
I say to the league with jurisprudence prayed
لنصر فى فؤادى فرط حب
Victory in my heart excessive love
ابو رياش ولى الرسما
Abu Rayash disregards propriety
أقول لصاحبى والراح روحى
I say to my companion as the wind is the soul
حرمان ذى ادب وحظوة جاهل
Deprivation has etiquette, ignorance has fortune
أنت ابن كل البرايا لكن اقتصروا
You are the son of all the deserts, but they have confined
يا زمانا ألبس الأحرار
O time, do not dress
حوى يوما ابو الهيذام أيرى
One day Abu Haytham came to me
حلف الرملى فيما
The sandy one swore about what
حزيران وتموز وآب
June, July, and August
لا تخدعنك اللحى ولا الصور
Do not be deceived by beards or appearances
قالوا عشقت صغيرا قلت ارتع فى
They said you loved as a child, I said graze
اذا اخو الحسن اضحى فعله سمجا
If the brother of beauty acts vulgar,
وليتم فما أوليتم الناس طائلا
Though being helpful deserves no blame or pain
لأم الشاعر الرملي صدغ
To my mother, Ramli Al-Sakh,
ذهب الذين يعاش فى اكنافهم
Those with whom life was lived are gone
لم يبق حر اليه يختلف
No longer do the free differ
قد شربنا على شقائق روض
We drank among the anemones of the garden
إنما البصرة أنشاب
Basra was built
مضى الاحرار وانقرضوا وبادوا
The free men are gone, extinct, vanished,
أبو رياش بغى والبغى مهلكة
Abu Rayash desired, and desire is deadly,
نحن بالبصرة فى لون
We are in Basra in a moment
ما أوقح المتنبى
How shameless al-Mutanabbi was
يقول ابن هانى أفسد الشعر ضلة
Ibn Hani said the most corrupt poetry led astray,
قل للوضيع أبى رياش لا تبل
Tell the worthless man who refused advice:
قل لى وطرطورك هذا الذى
Tell me, your lovely bird
عجبت للدهر في تصرفه
I'm amazed at the turns of fate,
ولما تعرض لى زائرا
When an unexpected guest visited me,
أمر غد أنت منه فى لبس
Tomorrow's matter is ambiguous to you
قولا لأهل زمان لا خلاق لهم
Say to the people of an age with no virtues,
اثنان لم ينكرهما منكر
Two deniers none denies-
يا من تطيب وهو من حرق استه
O you whose scent is fragrant, though from burning embers,
نكرت نحولى وهو من فرط الاسى
لا تصلح الدنيا ولا تستوى
يعيب الناس كلهم الزمانا
يقولون لى أصبحت فى العلم واحدا
كل من حاز سرورا
البدر والشمس المنيرة
أتطمع أن تحب ولا جفون
تولى شباب كنت فيه منعما
قف انظر الى در السحاب كأنه
على القبح الفظيع أبو رياش
أيها الشيخ الذى
يا رب سابغة حبتنى نعمة
جار الزمان علينا فى تصرفه
يطير الى الطعام ابو رياش
لنا سراج نوره ظلمة
وروض عبقرى الوشى غض
يا طالبا بالعلم حظا مسعدا
زمان قد تفرغ للفضول
نحن من الدهر فى أعاجيب
الدهر دهر عجيب
زمان رأينا فيه كل العجائب
إذا خفق اللواء على يوما
