1. Our closeness is now replaced with distance,
And our affection with estrangement.

For the memory gives life to our longing.

22. O breeze of youth, convey our greetings
To one whose greeting, even from afar, gave us life.

23. Will days double our sorrows,
Or treat us with justice long owed?

24. A prince, as though formed by God from musk
And the clay of men with perfect composition.

25. Or wrought into pure gold and adorned
With brilliant gems in flawless creation.

26. When he smiled, his gentle charm
Tamed the stars and made all hearts pliant.

27. To him, the radiant sun was a twin,
Or rather, next to him, it paled.

28. As though its flowers were fixed in his garden
Like stars in the heavens, for protection.

29. We were not equals in nobility,
But in love we were perfectly matched.

30. O meadow where we so often delighted,
With roses by the breeze made fresh.

31. O life whose fruits we enjoyed,
Tasting sweetness and fleeting joys.

32. O bliss we chased heedlessly,
Dragging its train in careless revelry.

33. Not to honor or revere you -
Your sublime worth needs no praise.

34. When peerless, mere words to describe you
Suffice not, but show and clarify.

35. O eternal Paradise! In your place
We were given Hellfire's Zaqqum and pus.

36. As if, while together, we did not live,
And fortune's eye was shut to our being.

37. If reunion in life is beyond reach,
We will meet in the Gathering and be reunited.

38. Two secrets hidden in the dark of night,
Nearly exposed ere dawn breaks its seal.

39. No wonder we complain though patience was prescribed,
Reading sorrow then forsaking composure.

40. But we did not replace your love, even when
Its draughts seemed sweet but left bitter thirst.

41. We turned from no horizon where you shone,
Abandoning its beauty, or shunning its brilliance.

42. Not by choice did we avoid it,
But returned against our will.

43. We grieve for you when you are recalled,
Joy floods us, songs carry our laments.

44. No wine-filled cups or melodies entertain,
With cheer or joyful tunes.

45. We will keep our vow, for as long as we have strength,
To be just is to be free.

46. We gained no new friend to confine us,
Or lover to turn us away.

47. The full moon rising into our night sky
Could not, but for you, shine its light upon us.

48. I weep in loyalty, though you bestow no gift,
Apparitions and memories suffice.

49. In your reply is reward, if your fair hands
Continue to tend us with care.
