1. Have you not seen that the sun is now confined to the grave?
That the bright full moon has set, leaving us in darkness?

2. If life departs from us, though reluctantly,
The sea of hopes will still overflow in its wake.

3. An age’s wrongdoing is atoned for by later good deeds,
And the sins of a period are excused by what follows.

4. So let not the despondent lose hope, for the night
Will last only until dawn breaks through again.

5. If one Commander passes away, Muhammad is his successor –
Justice, contentment, benevolence are his heirs.

6. By my life! How excellent was he whom time destroyed!
How excellent he whom fate succeeded!

7. He emboldened us, resolute was his intent,
His noble ornament was his humanity and joyful countenance.

8. A youth whose concern is to unite scattered glory,
Whose character blends the ornate with the plain.

9. The hearts were filled with love of him, a sorcery
Beyond mere passion – nay, it surpasses sorcery!

10. It crept where no other yearning creeps,
With a creeping not induced by wine.

11. In his shade we donned the raiment of security,
And the flower of livelihood blossomed as flowers bloom.

12. Customs returned which were like a brief intoxication
Or a spell cast on the epochs of time.

13. A king to whom we give sincere counsel and passion,
And from whom we receive reward and tender green gifts.

14. We rejoice in demonstrating loyalty openly,
Since no secret ever betrayed him nor any boldness offended him.

15. Say to the wandering perplexed: the flag of guidance has now appeared.
Say to the deluded ambitious: the matter has now been decided.

16. O resolute one, for you fond hearts have melted in sorrow,
Though patience was their goal, even if patience came to their aid.

17. Leave Fate to torment his folk with his calamities,
Since, my dear, you have no worth to me now the days have shrouded you.

18. Hardships will seem slight, though momentous indeed,
And grievous events become familiar once the noble stranger has departed.

19. We have lost you as the plains and hills lose the rain clouds,
Which leave their trace, guiding the flatlands and the rugged peaks.

20. Your efforts were a ornament for the nights, a necklace
And remembrance of you perfumes the bosom of their days.

21. So depart not, for death is the final end,
However short or long a lifetime is, that is where it terminates.

22. Your soul for ransom! It consoles for your loss; though you are buried,
You are neither forlorn nor drowned in tears.

23. What calamity if a mortal is interred?
True calamity is when his reward perishes!

24. Before you is a vanguard under God’s protection,
Around you an army on high alert.

25. You have no need for a champion’s support,
For divine sufficiency and aid are enough for you.

26. Goodness is yours - I trust and thank you,
For the denial shown by the infidels to your open hands.

27. When I clung to your side, the enemies recoiled,
And those who wished me ill recovered from their hatred.

28. From them speech softened that had once been harsh,
And those stern glances became kind.

29. So believe my hopes for you, as I am deserving
Of your open-handed reward, and this is no boast.

30. He whose efforts are for worldly fortune and plenty,
Seeks to gain your worldly success and plentiful bounty.
