1. If poetry is not infused by its Lord with magic
By my life, rhythms are useless, and poetry is not understood

2. After revelation, nothing remains from the news of heaven
To earth except poetry, the greatest miracle

ู ูุจุฅู ุงูุณู

ุฅูู ุงูุฃุฑุถู ุบูุฑู ุงูุดุนุฑู ู
ุนุฌุฒุฉู ูุจุฑู
3. Binding every soul that undertakes its burden
The trusted Spirit has descended with it, good tidings
ูฃ. ุนูููู ูููู ููุณู ุชุณุชูู ุจุญู

ููุฏู ูุฒู ุงูุฑูุญู ุงูุฃูู
ูู ุจู ุจุดุฑู
4. If it is not tilting the scales of minds
It is nothing but nonsense, or it resembles nonsense

ูููู ุตูุจู ุงูุนููู ุฑูุงุฌุญุง
ูู
ุง ูู ุฅููุงู ุงููุฐุฑ ุฃูู ูุดุจู ุงููุฐุฑุง
5. If it is not the revelation of ecstasy in the soul
Then chewing on it is like chewing on rock
ูฅ. ููุฅูู ูู
ูููู ููุญู ุงููููุณู ุทุฑูุจุฉ
ูู
ุถุบู ุฅููุงู ูู
ู ูู
ุถุบ ุงูุตุฎุฑุง
6. I see every measure except innate talent in the youth
Only increases poetryโs loss in its weight
ูฆ. ุฃูุฑู ูููู ู
ูุฒุงูู ุณูู ุงูุทุจุน ูู ุงููุชู
ูู
ุง ูุฒูุฏ ุงูุดุนุฑ ูู ููุฒูู ุฎุณุฑุง
7. If the rhymes are not of an easy nature
Then it is no glory to cross the sea for them
ูง. ูุฅูู ูู
ููู ุตูุบู ุงูููุงูู ุณุฌูุฉู
ูููุณ ุจู
ุฌุฏู ุฃูู ุชุฎูุถู ููุง ุงูุจุญุฑุง
8. I saw meanings like doves that would not alight
Except on eloquent or sweet words like a river
ูจ. ุฑุฃููุช ุงูู
ุนุงูู ูุงูุญู
ุงุฆู
ูู
ุชูุฑูุฏู
ุณูู ุณุงุฆุบู ุงูุฃูููุงุธ ุฃูู ุนุฐุจูุง ููุฑุง
9. And like a garden that does not incline towards non-Arabic
And takes nothing but the eloquent for its nest
ูฉ. ููุงูุฑูุฏู ูู
ุชุนุทููู ุนูููู ุบูุฑ ู
ูุนุฑุจู
ูููู
ุชุชุฎุฐู ุบูุฑู ุงููุตูุญ ููุง ุฎุฏุฑุง
10. So woe to the meaning if words betray it
And alas to it, alive, it has indeed inhabited the grave
ูกู . ููุง ุถูุนุฉ ุงูู
ุนูู ุฅูุฐุง ุงูููุธู ุฎุงูู
ูููุงูุงู ูู ุญูุงู ููุฏ ุณููููู ุงููุจุฑุง
11. I see, and it is truly worthy of acceptance what I see
That poetry has surpassed prose in two things
ูกูก. ุฃูุฑู ููุญูููู ุจุงููุจูู ุงูุฐู ุฃูุฑู
ุจุดูุฆูู ุฃูุถุญู ุงูุดุนุฑ ูุฏ ูุถู ุงููุซุฑุง
12. A weaving like al-Buhturiโs weaving and wisdom
Rivalling what al-Mutanabbi therewith led astray

13. We have come upon an era where we find naught
In its slackness except tears or little
ูกูฃ. ุฃูุชููุง ุนูููู ุญููู ู
ู ุงูุฏูุฑู ูู
ูุฌุฏู
ุจูุชุฑุชู ุฅููุง ุงูุจููู ุฃูู ุงููุฒุฑุง
14. Blinded, rhymes have indeed gone astray as guides
And seen nothing but defects in every rhyme
ูกูค. ูุฃูุนู
ู ููุฏ ุถููู ุงูููุงูู ู
ููุฑุฉู
ููู
ูุฑ ุฅููุง ูููู ูุงููุฉู ุนูุฑุง
15. And suspicious of poetry and prose itself
He herded thorns in a barren wasteland from them
ูกูฅ. ูู
ุชูู
ุงู ุจุงูุดุนุฑู ูุงููุซุฑ ููุณู
ุฑุนู ู
ููู
ุง ุดููุงู ุจุจุงุฏูุฉู ููุฑุง
16. They were called to literature, it and its people
To God from the claim of its nonsense, innocent
ูกูฆ. ุฏูุนูููุง ุฅููู ุงูุขุฏุงุจู ููู ููุฃููููุง
ุฅููู ุงููู ู
ู ุฏุนูู ุณุฎุงูุชู ุชูุจุฑุง
17. He swooped like a young bird lowering its wings
And he sought to emulate by its flight the eagle
ูกูง. ููู ููููู ุงููุฑุฎ ููุถ ุฌูุงุญูู
ูููุฏ ุฑุงู
ุฃูู ูุญุฐู ุจุชุญูููู ุงูููุณูุฑุง
18. But disability made him sit, so he became angry
As if he against the predecessors had a blood-feud
ูกูจ. ููุฃููุนุฏู ุนุฌุฒ ูุฃูุตุจุญ ุณุงุฎุทุงู
ูุฃูููู ูู ุนูุฏ ุงูุฃูููู ุณุจููุง ุซุฃูุฑุง
19. So the mistake of one whose craftsmanship's aim was true
Is like a bleary-eyed criticising the sun and censuring the moon

ู ูุฏ ุตูุจ ุงูููููู ุตูุนู
ูุฃูุฑู
ุฏ ุฐู
ูู ุงูุดู
ุณู ูุงูุชูุต ุงูุจุฏุฑุง
20. He shouts and calls for modernism and his partisans
While neither few nor many rally to his land
ูขู . ูุตูุญู ูููุฏุนูุง (ููุฌุฏูุฏ) ูุญุฒุจู
ูููุณ ุจุฏุงุฑู ู
ูู ููุงูู ูููุง ูุซุฑุง
21. Should I discard my tune to be condemned for his tune?
If so, I would be content after my faith with blasphemy
ูขูก. ุฃูุฃููุจุฐู ูุญูู ูู ุฃูุฏููู ุจูุญููุ
ุฅูุฐุงู ุฃููุง ุฃูุฑุถู ุจุนุฏ ุฅููู
ุงูู ุงูููุฑุง
22. May your father be sacrificed for you, who gave birth to you, o wife
And carried in her pregnancy shame and sin
ูขูข. ูุฏุงู ุฃูุจ ู
ุง ุฃููุฌุจุช ุจู ุฒูุฌู
ููููุฏ ุญู
ูุช ูู ุญู
ูู ุงูุฎุฒู ูุงูููุฒุฑุง
23. Do you reject something whose taste you have savoured
And call to something you have no news of?
ูขูฃ. ุฃูุชุฑูุถ ุดูุฆุงู ู
ุง ุชุฐููููุช ุทุนู
ู
ููุชุฏุนู ูุดูุกู ูุง ุชุญูุทู ุจู ุฎุจุฑุงุ
24. By this the superiority of the existent appears
Likewise the merit of the opposite is inferred from its opposite
ูขูค. ุจูุฐุง ุจุฏุง ูุถู ุงูู
ูุฌูููุฏ ู
ุงุซูุงู
ูุฐููู ูุถู ุงูุถุฏูู ู
ู ุถุฏู ููุฏุฑู
25. It is poetry whatever Muhammad has accomplished from it
Circling minds with its sorcery like wine
ูขูฅ. ูู ุงูุดุนุฑู ู
ุง ุฃูุฏุงู ุทุจุนู (ู

ุฏ)
ุฃูุฏุงุฑ ุนูููู ุงูุฃููุจุงุจู ู
ู ุณุญุฑูู ุฎู

26. Rumbling, weaving words full of winks
Strong, firm ties binding it fast

ูููู ูุณุฌ ุงูููุธ ู
ุง ููู ู
ุบู
ุฒ
ู
ุชูู ุนูุฑู ุงูุฅูุญูุงู
ู
ุดุฏูุฏู ุฃุณุฑุง
27. If he sheds a tear for the one whose wishes faded
The branch of hopes with him becomes verdant again
ูขูง. ุฅูุฐุง ู
ุง ูู
ู ุฏู
ุนุงู ุนูููู ุฐุงุจูู ุงูู
ูู
ูุนูุฏ ุจู ุบูุตููู ุงูุฃูู
ุงูููู ู
ุฎุถุฑูุง
28. Poetryโs youth, its leaders have given him primacy
And pretend no excuse in turning down his request
ูขูจ. ูุชู ุงูุดุนุฑ ุฃูุนุทุชู ุงูููุงุฏ ูุชุงุชู

ุชูุชุญูู ูู ุฑุฏูู ุทูุจุชูู ุนุฐุฑุง
29. So from every word he chooses its pleasures
And from every splendid meaning he milks the virgins

ููู ูููู ููุธู ูุตุทูู ุขูุณุงุชู

ู ูู ู
ุนูู ุฑุงุฆุนู ููุถูุฑูุนู ุงูุจูุฑุง
30. He splits the words of the trite with subtleties
Into the settled meanings, enriching them with traces
ูฃู . ูุดููู ุฃูููุงุธู ุงูุจุฏุงุฉู ู
ุทุงุฑูุงู
ุฅููู ุญูุถูุฑููููุงุช ุงูู
ุนุงูู ุจู
ุง ุฃูุซุฑู
31. He called her by whom without him the sword is a devotee
So he awakened a people whose slumberous illness spread
ูฃูก. ุฏุนุง ููุชู ู
ู ุฏูููุง ุงูุณููู ู
ุตูุชู
ูุฃูููุธ ููู
ุงู ุฏุงุกู ููู
ูู
ู ุงุณุชุดุฑู
32. He watered a hope in them and kindled a zeal
By God he has watered! By God he has kindled!

33. If the peopleโs poet does not alert his people
Then it is better he make his people suffer

ูุฐุงูู ุจุฃูู ูุดูู ุจู ููู
ู ุฃูุญุฑู
34. I see poetry as breaths the youth dispenses
With which he lights and rekindles coals
ูฃูค. ุฃูุฑู ุงูุดุนุฑู ุฃูููุงุณุงู ูุตุฑูููุง ุงููุชู
ููุทูู ุจูุง ุฌู
ุฑุง ูููุฐูู ุจูุง ุฌู

35. And blows in them a spirit for the dead nation
So it slips out from the dormancy of its heedlessness
