1. Brood by a grave on the edge of the valley
Watered by the passing breeze in Meisaloon

2. Bow your head in reverence at the tomb of one
Whose glory Allah granted perpetuation

3. Make your circumambulation greeting unto him
A solace to your soul, not to the valley

4. The tomb greeting - had we kept its tradition
Would have returned my fathers and ancestors to paganism

5. I honored his tomb lest the mount of a rider be desecrated
And chose to desecrate myself and my children instead

6. Over Joseph we mourned when he met his death
The sorrows of Jacob, fearful and distraught

7. He fell, his coat dyed red with his blood
Like the sun when it sets in its bloody garb

8. The fawn had not quenched its thirst when his blood poured
My soul bleats for him - is there a shepherd or hunter?

9. Among the youth who marched to their death when it loomed
A battalion of giraffes and camels

10. Allah's peace be upon them in al-Majandal
Their limbs strewn between valleys and sands

11. He ransomed the Arabism that ennobled him
O Allah's mercy upon the ransomed and redeemer

12. And he lived protecting and guarding it
And died repelling the transgressor from its territory

13. He gathered it in life as its leader
And in death as well - so blessings in both states to the guide

14. Not like those who assumed leadership in our greatest calamity
And shackled us in chains and shackles

15. Yesterday, their lineage was traced to Qahtan
Today, they disavow the pronunciation of "Dhad"

16. They claim that reason is their guide
Yet they call not except to ruin and corruption

17. Is it reason to remain while our homeland
Is captivity, picked at by every vagrant?

18. Let your reason, not unreasoned emotion, rule
If it concludes with such disgrace and bondage

19. O religion of my heart since the day grief
Afflicted my liver and prolonged my concern

20. In Meisaloon, from the tree of sorrows, a chain hangs
Its ends tied to the corners of shanties

21. Is there a way to justice in an age
Whose calamities surpass count and number?

22. The age turns a deaf ear to our complaints
Can it hear my groaning and chanting?

23. Tammuz has favored those who won it
While misfortune for us lay in ambush

24. It singled us out for the curses of fate
When its curses joyfully befell us

25. Perhaps a stumbling that we wish to end
Or abandonment that secretly plots a promised victory
