1. He who missed seeing the branches in bloom
Let him come to me when night's secrets abound
١. من فاته أَن يرى الأَشجان ماثلةً
فليأتني حينَ أَمرُ الليلِ يجتمعُ
2. He will find a bed of sorrows in me awash
With woe flowing in sights and ears around
٢. يجدْ علَى مضجعِ الأحزانِ نِضْوَ أَسى
سيَّان في بثِّه مرأَى وَمستمع
3. The eye will shed tears if it chances to look
As if blood from its mirror will burst and erupt
٣. العينُ ترتدُّ عبرى عَنْهُ إِنْ نظرتْ
تكاد بالدمِ من مرآه تندفع
4. The ear will hear from my sighing a tune
That almost tears heartstrings apart in a swoop
٤. والأُذنُ تسمعُ من تطريبه نغماً
يكاد منه نياطُ القلبِ ينقطع
5. If a seer knew what lay in my heart's trove
At dawn would his heart split and violently rupture
٥. وَلو درى ناظرٌ ماذا تضمَّنه
قلبي لأَصبح منه القلبُ ينصدع
6. How many sighs when stars begin to set
Do I heave till breath from my soul they usurp
٦. كم زفرةٍ عند إِدبارِ النجومِ إِذا
صعَّدتها خلتُ مَعْها النفسَ تنتزع
7. Tomorrow will my heart, grief's channel become
As it pours right through me and from eyes they gush
٧. سيلُ الشجونِ غدا قلبي قرارته
ينصبُّ فيه وَمن عينيَّ ينهمع
8. Having stuck with them so long am now used
To grief, that without it I'm lost and nonplussed
٨. من طولِ ما لزمتني قد سكنتُ لها
حتى ليدركني من نأْيها جزع
9. So much have I endured that my skin is inured
And my fortress of patience lies breached and corrupt
٩. طالَ التجلدُ حتى عقَّني جلدي
وَحصن صبريَ أَمسى وَهو مفترع
10. I can't stay silent if dawn finds me vexed
Nor safe is speech if panic sets in erupt
١٠. لا أَملكُ الصمتَ إِنْ أَضحى عَلَى مضضٍ
وَلستُ آمنَ قولاً دونه الفزع
11. Woe to him whose words roam unconfined
Though no space for words can he find or usurp
١١. فويح من كان جوّالاً بمقوله
وَما له في مجالِ القولِ متَّسع
12. O you who wish me to lower my wing to them
Great is the divide, so leave off, enough!
١٢. يا مَنْ يسومونني خفضَ الجناحِ لهمْ
تعاظمَ الخلفُ فيما بيننا فدعوا
13. I swore to myself when my cheeks turned grey
No weakness to anyone will my face adapt
١٣. عاهدتُ نفسيَ مذْ صعَّرتُ خديَ أَنْ
لا يستبينَ به نحو امرئٍ ضرع
14. May God never lift me from my wretched state
If my want is not honor's ascent corrupt
١٤. لا رفَّه اللهُ عني ما أُعالجه
إنْ كنتُ غيرَ مراد العز أَنتجع
15. When hypocrisy one day rides its host
It falls from high place it hoped to adapt
١٥. إذا النفاقُ سما يوماً بصاحبه
فإِنه ساقطٌ من حيث يرتفع
16. In my eyes humanity's status has dropped
Since Adam's time, fraud and duped nonadapt
١٦. قد هوَّن الناسَ عندي أَنَّ شأْنهمُ
من عهد (آدم) خداعٌ وَمنخدع
17. They resent just my knowledge that their fraud
Is the base on which factions and sects erupt
١٧. ما ينقمون سوى علمي بأَنَّ عَلَى
خداعِهمْ قامتِ الأَحزابُ والشيع
18. Be warned of those whose devious politics
Never end where they began or corrupt
١٨. حاذرْ عَلى الحقِّ من قومٍ سياستهمْ
لا تنتهي بهمُ حيث الذي شرعوا
19. Beware of those cloaked in mosques, abbeys, and shrines
Yet hearts neither pious nor moral adapt
١٩. واحذرْ عَلى الدينِ من قومٍ تضمُّهمُ
تلك المساجد والأَديار والبيع
20. I fled them, their ways and beliefs abhorred
Fleeing danger, though difficult to adapt
٢٠. فررتُ منهمْ بآرائي وَمعتقدي
فرارَ من جدَّ في آثاره السبع
21. I seek God's forgiveness for when my soul
Took their counsel, wavering from His adapt
٢١. استغفرُ اللهَ من حالٍ وَجدتُ بها
نفسي ترى رأْيَهمْ حيناً وَتتَّبع
22. Thanks be to God that I wiped my hands clean
Of all that they falsely invented and usurped
٢٢. والحمدُ لله أَني قد مسحتُ يدي
مِن كلِّ ما لفَّقوا بَغْياً وَما وَضعوا
