1. God has ordained that I endure
And the eloquent tongues adore eternity

2. Never since I was a child was I abandoned
Rather they clothed me with the mantles of the eminent

3. Which vein among the languages compares to mine
That the hand of poetry adorned with necklaces

4. Which bosom contains treasures like mine
And shows you gems piled up within

5. In adversity I was raised but my standard
Remained splendid, eminent and ever renewed

6. My poets were silenced by rhymes
Every chanter is muted by the warbler

7. They soared eagles in the heights and hunted down
What they saw of unique ideas

8. And how my preachers’ pulpits swaggered with pride
Orators, dance away stagnation

9. So peruse their scripts for in them
Is wisdom that sets the stray aright

10. Everyone who dares cross my sea of eloquence
Can only adorn himself with my pearls

11. And when one reads the biographies of my people
He sees the lion and the intrepid hunter

12. And sees the taste refined and civilized
And sees gentleness, how it harbors destruction

13. I spanned ages, one after another
And filled the ages with glory and existence

14. I singularized myself in rhetoric until
The non-Arabs in the lands raised codes for me

15. People despaired of catching up with my dust
And I surpassed in the race all boundaries

16. Protecting the blameless is now for me
A tradition I cannot bear to breach

17. What pact did I make that brought
Shackles piling upon my neck

18. And if I make a promise I fulfil my word
While many break their vows

19. My soul is pleased if one day
Is spent in loyalty though I become a martyr alone

20. And the high aspirations are pleased if one day
Bore witness to my perfection

21. A cleft in courage, in defiance
You will not see among ornaments its equal

22. And my damsels are a refuge for the fearful
That makes those who seek protection invincible

23. How can I fear enemies and around me is a fence
Made of hearts that dissolve iron

24. How can I fear nightly raids of suspicion
And before me Lebanon that bloody the lions

25. How can I fear the withering of my meadow and I have
A spring whose stream and flowers are pure

26. An academy I found by my side
The affection of a mother to her only child

27. It suckles the youth at the breast of milk
So the young man grows, a sword of steel

28. O sons of the Arabs honor me so you may live
Propagate in the land my praiseworthy mention

29. And spread among the nobles the feats of my people
And vie in glorious deeds of old

30. The Arabs in tents were kings
Will you be slaves in palaces?

31. The Arabs were most clement of people
And when wronged, firmest of people in purpose

32. They see only harmony as bliss
And conflict as most grave adversity

33. So banish discord among you so that
You make glory in the countries firm

34. And compete in what benefits success
And exert utmost effort in knowledge

35. The Orient is only a slave in ignorance
So elevate it through learning until it rules
