1. On the pages of life, the hand of fate
Has inscribed lessons for those with memory
١. على صفحاتِ العمر خطت يدُ الدهر
عِظاتٍ لذي الذكرى تُسطرُ بالتبرِ
2. Through them I learned life's secret and its essence
And all the sweet and bitter the world contains
٢. عرفتُ بها سرَّ الحياة وكنهها
وما تحتوي الدُّنيا من الحلوِ والمرِ
3. For life is but stages we pass
Sometimes on thorns and sometimes on flowers
٣. فما العمرُ إلا مرحلاتٌ نجوزُها
على الشوكِ أَحياناً وحيناً على الزَّهر
4. Dreams build for us towers of bliss
Then days demolish them with red storms
٤. تَشيدُ لنا الأَحلامُ بُرجَ سعادةٍ
فتنسفُهُ الأيامُ بالنُّوبِ الحُمر
5. In a cradle slept an infant swaddled
Like a bird nestling softly in its nest
٥. ومهدٍ به نامَ الصغيرُ مقمَّطاً
كأني به العصفورُ يرقُدُ في الوَكر
6. Wanting to stir but the wraps restrain him
So he lies there helpless and suppressed
٦. يُريد حراكاً والقماطُ يصدُّهُ
فيلبثُ مغلولَ اليدين على قسر
7. His sobs translate his sorrows
As tears stream down his tender breast
٧. تُترجمُ عن لوعاتهِ عبَراتُهُ
فتنثرهُا عيناهُ دراً على النَّحر
8. When the child's voice stirs his mother's heart
The lightning of love flows between their souls
٨. إذا هزَّ صوتُ الطفل مهجة أمهِ
فبرقُ الهوى ما بين قلبيهما يجري
9. She sings to him melodies of affection
Attentive, he listens to the tunes of her lips
٩. تُناغيه نشوى من ملامح وجههِ
فيُصغي إلى أَنغامها باسمَ الثغر
10. And she recites to him lyrics of passion
Charmed, he echoes in babble her spells
١٠. وتنشدُهُ شعرَ الهوى فيُعيدهُ
بلهجتِه العجماءِ سحراً على سحر
11. In her eyes he's sweeter than all treasures
At dusk more beautiful than the dawn
١١. بمرآهُ يغدو السَّهدُ أَشهى من الكرى
اليها وجنحُ الليلِ ازهى من الفجر
12. She sees him in love's mirror as though
A brother to the moon or brighter than the moon
١٢. تراه بمرآة الغرام كأنه
أَخو البدرِ أو ابهى ضياءً من البدر
13. Then life bares its blade in his youth
To prune his blooming, viridescent branch
١٣. وطوراً تخالُ الدهرَ ينضو حُسامَهُ
على غصنهِ الميَّاس في زهرة العمر
14. The worm of worry pierces her heart
And turmoil surges in waves around
١٤. فيثقبُ سُوسُ الهمِ جِذعَ فؤَادها
ويَقذف من حوليهِ موجاً من الذُّعر
15. Alas! A mother's life is bitter in taste
Her child's cradle-life is a kind of captivity
١٥. أَلا إِنَّ عيشَ الأُمِ مرٌّ مذاقُهُ
وعيشَ ابنها في المهد ضربٌ من الأسر
16. Once my heart was vexed with people
I found no solace but the wilderness
١٦. ويومٍ به طابت عن الناس مهجتي
فلم ارَ للسَّلوى سبيلاً سوى القفر
17. I went out, worries in my chest like
Spearheads - who can extract spears from my chest?
١٧. خرجتُ وفي صدري الهمومُ كأنها
رواسٍ ومن يقصي الرواسي عن صدري
18. When my eyes fell on a meadow in bloom
Crowned by the rain with hyacinths
١٨. فمذ اشرفت عيني على زهرة الرُّبى
وقد كللتها بالجُمانِ يدُ القطر
19. I saw the hordes of mankind attack sorrow
Leave no vestige or trace of sadness in my heart
١٩. رأيتُ جيوشَ البشر شدَّت على الأسى
فلم تُبقِ للأتراح في الصَّدر من إِثر
20. A river flowed there, the breeze braiding
Foam caps, or chains of pearls over it
٢٠. هنالك نهرٌ تعقدُ الريحُ فوقَهُ
زُرودَ لُجينٍ او سلاسلَ من درَ
21. On its banks the creeping shadow stretched
Its scented breezes beyond compare
٢١. على ضَفَّتيهِ الدَّوحُ مدَّ ظلالهُ
لهُ نفحاتٌ أَينَ منها شذا العِطر
22. When a butterfly glided by it
Chased by a toddler with cheeks aflame
٢٢. إِذا بفراشٍ مر يعدو وراءَه
صبيٌ ذكت في خدهِ جُذوةُ الحر
23. Finding no refuge but the shade
He clung there for relief from the heat
٢٣. فلم يرَ غيرَ الدوحِ من ملجأ له
فلاذَ بهِ حرَّانَ من شدة الفر
24. After a while the boy's eye fell
On an anthill round a mound of grain
٢٤. وقد وقعت عينُ الفتى بعد ساعةٍ
على بيت نملٍ حول كدسٍ من البرِ
25. So he crushed it unjustly and scattered
The ants and stores that were safe within
٢٥. فدمَّرهُ ظلماً وشتت شملهُ
وأتلفَ ما فيهش من النمل والذخر
26. I said to myself: this is the image
Of one who makes the world drink bitter patience
٢٦. فقلتُ بنفسي هذهِ صورةُ الذي
يُذيقُ الورى كأساً أمرَّ من الصبر
27. When did events become so cruel
As to inflict harm on God's weakest creatures?
٢٧. متى ألفَ الأحداثُ أن ينزلوا الأذى
بأَعجز خلقِ الله شبُّوا على الغدر
28. I looked upon the youth with a gaze
Where the sun of truth shone in my thoughts
٢٨. نظرتُ إلى أهل الشَّبيبةِ نظرةً
تجلَّت بها شمسُ الحقائق في فكري
29. They have a recalcitrant pride, disdaining
Smallness, with ambitions like the eagle's
٢٩. لهم عزَّةٌ قعساءُ تأبى صغارةً
وهمتهم من دونها همةُ النسر
30. They dive into the sea of glories
To retrieve the precious pearl from the deep
٣٠. يغوصون في بحر المفاخر جهدهم
ليستخرجوا الدر الثمين من القعر
31. Lions in battle, refusing injustice
With resolve firm as rock, forever flowing
٣١. أَسودٌ أباةُ الضيم في ساحة الوغى
لهم عزماتٌ لا تكل عن الصخر
32. Their homelands cannot be violated
They defend them with unsheathed blades, reddened
٣٢. وأَوطانُهم لا يُستباحث ذمارُها
يحامونض عنها بالمثقفةِ السمرِ
33. God protect the lion cubs and lions
And guard them from the pack of deceit and guile
٣٣. رعى الله أشبال العرين وأسده
وصانهم من عصبة الختل والمكر
34. And salute the brave youth with a salutation
Echoed in the forest by the zealous leopard
٣٤. وحيا مَغاوير الحروب تحيةً
تُرددها في غابها أُسدُ الخِدر
35. They are the arsenal of nations, protecting their glory
With ferocity constantly gushing like a torrent
٣٥. همُ عدةُ الأوطان يحمونَ عزها
ببأسٍ على حدِ الظبي ابداً يجري
36. Though youth has departed, they still
Reap the blossoms of wisdom from the orchard of experience
٣٦. ولا نالتِ الجلى الكهولَ فإِنهم
ليجنون زهر الرشد من فتنِ الخبر
37. Their hearts discern the ways of the world, well-versed
In its ethics however long the ages spanned
٣٧. لهم همةُ الفتيان لكن قلبهم
بصيرٌ بأَخلاق الورى سابرُ الدهر
38. Flirtations do not beguile their hearts
Nor are they boys at play as fawns in the meadow
٣٨. فلا تستفزُّ المطرباتُ قلوبهم
وليسوا أَوانَ اللهوِ كالخود في الخدر
39. Poised between vigor and dignity
We see them lofty yet abstaining from wine
٣٩. فهم بين حدي خفةٍ ورزانةٍ
نراهم بأَطوادٍ ولا شاربي خمر
40. When the mature man sires children, he nurtures them
With fine morals and virtuous traits
٤٠. إذا رزقَ الكهلُ البنينَ غذاهمُ
بآدابه الحسنى وأَخلاقهِ الغُر
41. He teaches them in the cradle love of their nourisher
And saves them in his lap from evil ways
٤١. يُلقنهُم في المهد حبَّ غذاهمُ
ويجعلهم من معشر السوءِ في حجر
42. He shields their hearing from any word
That could one day lead them to sin's abyss
٤٢. ويحجزُ عن أسماعهم كلَّ لفظةٍ
تؤدي بهم يوماً إلى هوةِ الوَزر
43. He hides from their sight any scene
That could imprint vice's germ in their minds
٤٣. ويحجبُ عن ابصارهم كلَّ مشهدٍ
يُثبتُ في الأذهانِ جرثومةَ الشَّر
44. If any crooked branch appears in them, he swiftly
Prunes it gently, saving it from being severed
٤٤. إذا اعوجَّ غصنٌ فيهم هبَّ مُسرعاً
يثقفهُ غضا فينجو من الكسر
45. If their youth shows traces of insolence
He reprimands them, not with blows and estrangement
٤٥. وإن بدرت منهم بوادرُ حدةٍ
يؤدِبهم باللحظ لا الضَّرب والهُجر
46. For his glance to them is more effective than the sword
His awe makes violence and rebuke unnecessary
٤٦. فلحظتُهُ أَمضى من السَّيف عندهم
وهيبتُهُ تُغني عن العُنفِ والزَّجرِ
47. And when they do a good deed, he rewards them
With a prize that endears goodness to their souls
٤٧. وإِن صنعوا صُنعاً جميلاً جزاهمُ
جزاءً يُحلي عندهم عملَ البرِ
48. He gives them to sip from his affection's nectar
Goblets that make them forget fermented wine
٤٨. يُديرُ عليهم من رحيقِ حَنانه
كؤُوساً تُنسيهم مُعتقة الخمر
49. The best he does for their virtue
Is to lift ignorance's veil from their breasts
٤٩. وأشرفُ ما يأتيه في جنبِ خيرهم
إِزاحةُ سِترِ الجهلِ عن ساحةِ الصدر
50. He spends his brilliance in this cause
For knowledge is surely better than wealth
٥٠. فينُفقُ في هذي السَّبيل نُضارَهُ
ولا ريبَ أَنَّ العلمَ خيرٌ من الدرِ
51. An esteemed elder whose head is crowned with white
Like roses adorning a branch in the garden
٥١. وشيخٍ جليلٍ كلَّلَ الشَّيبُ رأسهُ
كتكليل غُصنِ الروض بالنور والزَّهر
52. When the days obscure his glowing sunset
His views enlighten you like the dawn
٥٢. إِذا فلتِ الأيامُ غربَ مضائهِ
فآراؤهُ تُغنيكَ عن طلعةِ الزُّهر
53. If the night of problems grows dark, there shines
A wisdom brighter than shooting stars in his mind
٥٣. وإن جنَّ ليلُ المشكلات تألقت
له حكمةٌ أَزهى من الشهبِ الغُر
54. So the arrows of his insights do not miss the target
He can read the book of the unseen by the intellect
٥٤. فلا تخطئُ المرمى سهامُ ظُنونه
ويقرأُ ما في صفحة الغيب بالفكر
55. Every assembly is filled with awe of him
As victories and glories fill the brave and valiant
٥٥. تحفُّ به في كلّ نادٍ مهابةٌ
كما حُفَّتِ الأبطال بالمجد والنصر
56. His gathering is like hyacinths strewn
Across its surface, or embers of light from flint
٥٦. ومجلسهُ منثورة في أديمهِ
عُقودُ جُمانس او شُذورٌ من للتبر
57. He has a horizon graced with wisdom's halo
As though encircled by the moon's own aura
٥٧. له مطلعٌ زانتهُ هالةُ حكمةٍ
كأَني بها من حولهِ هالةُ البدر
58. Indeed, the elder is more beneficial for people
Than a sword in the grip of a gallant youth
٥٨. ألا إنَّ الشَّيخِ انفعُ للورى
من العضبِ في كفِ الفتى الباسلِ الغرِ
59. How many calamities have the elders resolved!
Without them the land would be paralyzed
٥٩. فكم نكبةٍ جلَّى الشيوخُ غيومها
ولولاهمُ ضاقت بها حيلُ القُطر
60. How many floods have they weathered, flood after flood
Never heeding ebb or flow, surge or recession!
٦٠. وكم غمرةٍ خاضوا على إِثر غمرةٍ
ولم يحفلوا يوماً بمدٍ ولا جزر
61. The hand of experience has polished their minds
And polishing makes the mind shine brighter than dawn
٦١. لقد صقلت كفُّ التجاربِ ذهنهم
وبالصقلِ يغدو الذهن أجلى من الفجر
62. Seasoned through their eras' changing fortunes
And learned in its harms and benefits
٦٢. فباتوا على خُبرٍ بأطوار دهرهم
وعلمٍ بما فيها من النفعِ والضُّرِ
63. When the army of hardship marches, their minds
Unleash on it a barrage of ideas like a slashing sword
٦٣. إذا كر جيشُ العُسر جرد فكرهم
عليه من الآراء صَمصامةً تفري
64. Yet the elder's life is bitter, even if
He rules exalted on the throne of power and command
٦٤. على أنَّ عمرَ الشَّيخِ مُرٌّ ولو غدا
على عرشِ عز في سما النهي والأمر
65. You see him shiver in the cold
And melt in the blazing heat of summer
٦٥. تراهُ أَوانَ القرَّ يهتزُّ رعدةً
وان حلَّ فصلُ القيظ ذابَ من الحرِ
66. He laments the era of youth, grieving
For his strength which has betrayed him in the sunset of life
٦٦. ينوحُ على عهدِ الشبيبةِ نادباً
قواهُ وقد خانتهُ في مغربِ العمر
67. No wonder he regrets the days of his prime
For he is now bent like a bow, its tension slackened
٦٧. فلا غروَ إِن يأُسف على زمن الصبا
فقد باتَ مثل القوس محدودبِ الظهر
68. His vision has dimmed and his teeth are gone
In his chest worries burn hotter than embers
٦٨. وأَبصارهُ كلَّت واسنانهُ هوَت
وفي صدره همٌّ احرُّ من الجمر
69. He sees death ambushed all around
To sink its claws unexpectedly in his breast
٦٩. يرى حولهُ أنَّ المنايا رواصدٌ
لتُنشبَ في احشائهِ مخلبَ الغدر
70. Its sculpting fingers carve his grave
And the hand of fate digs it deeper and deeper
٧٠. وفي يدها المنحاتُ تنحتُ قبرهُ
وتحفُرهُ كفُّ الردى ايما حفر
71. So death does not disappear from his mind's eye
Nor are thoughts of the grave's abyss averted from his gaze
٧١. فليسَ يغيبُ الموت عن عين فكره
ولا تُصرفُ الأنظارُ عن لجةِ القبر
72. Damn this world that immerses people in its cares
Though tasting its joys is like sipping aloes
٧٢. فتباً لدنيا يغمرُ الناسَ همها
ولذاتها فيها عصيرٌ من الصبر
73. If you wish to live as bliss's ally
Do much good and devote yourself to righteousness
٧٣. إذا شئتَ ان تحيا حليفَ سعادةٍ
فأكثر من الحُسنى وأقِبل على البرِ
74. For the best of all people are those who adorned
The days of their lives with deeds that delight in the Place of Final Review
٧٤. فخيرُ الورى من زانَ ايَّام عُمرهِ
بما يُبهجُ الأَلباب في موقفِ الحشر
