1. Which of us spends the night restfully
When his rivers have not burst forth with life

2. What heart can hide joy
After the heart of the Prophet, the guide found bliss

3. Oh what sorrow for him when he had to depart
From the abode of his grandfather, vanquished

4. They wrote to him and he came cutting through the desert
Crossing its plains and rugged terrain

5. They failed him and broke their covenant with God
And came to him with injustice and lies

6. So he warned them, the warner
But the unjust insisted on denial

7. They persisted and grew arrogant and forgot
A frowning, glowering day for all people

8. I cannot forget when he stood up amidst his comrades
Scattering pearls from his mouth

9. Saying the enemy has no ambition but evil
I must fell their warriors

10. Go, for night is a veil and the time is not for rage
Nor the path fraught with danger

11. But they answered: God forbid! We will sacrifice ourselves for you
And death for your sake is not too much

12. We will not submit then, when we have submitted you
And cut the rope between us and the foe

13. Do not let us abandon you, alone with the enemy
And flee our backs in cowardice

14. God did not show us that, so they chose
The abode of eternity a great kingdom

15. They strove in the jihad against the enemies
Some becoming a shield for others

16. The party of the Harbs they besieged with war
An evil which had grown wings

17. How much blood they shed, and how many
Souls they destroyed with carnage

18. Then the caller of death summoned them, so they marched on
As if death had come with glad tidings

19. They answered, hastening into battle
Their share had been plentiful

20. If they embraced swords, they embraced sincerity
In paradise embracing nymphs

21. If they lie dead in the dust as martyrs
They will reap paradise and silk

22. Tomorrow drinking a brimming cup
And glancing about in joy

23. Such was their reward from God
Their efforts thanked

24. Then after him marched al Sibt in Ura's valley
Seeking aid against the foe from his party

25. He was succour for the worlds but ended
Seeking help, oh people, imploring aid

26. Then came to him a cursed arrow
That felled his strong body prone on the ground

27. It pierced his heart - truly the archer
Had gravely erred with that shot

28. Then came to him Shamr, baring the hatred
Seething in his chest

29. He climbed upon his chest with impious audacity
That wicked wretch always so bold

30. And Husayn said: If you are ignorant of my status
Ask the experts about that

31. He saw his noble severed head raised
Onto a spear, radiating light

32. The sign and the honest one were slaughtered
And truth afterwards was subdued

33. Strange that the sword should slay one who was himself
A famed sword against the enemy

34. Strange that the sun should burn the sun -
Its brilliance never broken

35. Wondrous that the sky remained still
And the moon of heaven shone on

36. How can it illuminate after him? Is not
The moon borrowing his light?

37. They left him on the dust, though he was God's shade
Suffering intense heat

38. Then they were content with the vilest men
As vanguards defending the borders

39. Against them God of Majesty protects the borders
They abandoned in the Hijaz the remains of a people

40. Whose memory afterwards faded
The universe darkened after them

41. For they were lamps for the world, shining moons
They violated that esteemed household which had been

42. A fortress for the distressed, an impenetrable wall
In the tents they lit a fire that blazed fiercely

43. So they will roast in hell's cauldron
After dragging out the captive women

44. Weeping, finding none to protect them
Expressing anguish for one slain by the sword of injustice

45. His neck slashed
Who will gather the spices for his embalming

46. Who will undertake to wash a people purified with martyrdom?
Who will pray over the leader of prayers? Who will bury

47. Those bodies beneath the earth?
Who will mourn the Prophet's grandson? The loss inflicted

48. Made the messenger himself weep
For lions who were slaughtered like sacrifices

49. Complaining of throats that had roared like seas
For the adornment of worshippers chained

50. By shackles, made a hostage
Strange that slaves are emboldened against one

51. Who was a master and prince to women
For the towering mountain, the mighty peer

52. For the branch of the lofty tree, the helping hand
For the full moon that dawned with darkness in its burial place

53. For the shining sun furled up
For the body laying in the grave's dust

54. For the head atop the spear's point
A forehead never touched by prostration to any but God

55. Was rubbed in the dirt in debasement
Pure cheeks never flushed from modesty before people

56. Were walled in by rocks
Veiled faces protected from people's eyes

57. Were exposed by them and stripped of covering
Houses extolled by God were razed

58. After their dwellers departed
Oh what immense agony shuddering the pillar of faith

59. Due to their mighty stature, a great and serious quaking
And tribulations that saddened the Prophet and his Guardian

60. Ali, and all of their household
Disasters will always unfold, their anguish

61. Still affecting people's grief
Until the Mahdi, guarding the faith, arises

62. To make the enemies drink a bitter poison
May he reach, my Lord, what he hopes for

63. And show him from You an easy opening
Would that I knew when we may see the envoy

64. To truth, the shining lamp
Or when his grandfather's famed sword

65. Will be seen raised above his head
When the banners of victory will unfurl

66. Through him and wave above his head
Or when he will wade diving deep into the fray

67. As one who was deemed never to plunge
Or when he will bring Islam back

68. To life after its dormancy, like its first glory
Or when his caller will proclaim on God's behalf

69. Good tidings to the people
That will be a day of joy for the faithful

70. But on the unbelievers a calamity
O Household taught by Revelation and spelled out

71. By God, has the time for relief not come?
Forerunners to you, your excellent lineage

72. That God sent down in a precious, scattered string
Seeking by it your abode, wherein they will not see

73. Sun or biting cold
Those praising others are losers, but praising you

74. Is a trade never depleted or made bankrupt
Upon you from your Lord are blessings

75. That perfume the cosmos with a diffusing fragrance
