1. Not dead is he who lost his life fighting,
Like Jassas ibn Murrah of brave endeavor,
١. قَتيلٌ ما قَتيلُ المَرءِ عَمرٍو
وَجَسّاسِ بنِ مُرَّةَ ذي صَريمِ
2. Who suffered a blow that pierced his heart,
Yet he did not seek comfort or respite.
٢. أَصابَ فُؤادَهُ بِأَصَمَّ لَدنٍ
فَلَم يَعطِف هُناكَ عَلى حَميمِ
3. For tomorrow and the day after still bear
Great tasks not accomplished, of high endeavor.
٣. فَإِنَّ غَداً وَبَعدَ غَدٍ لَوَهنٌ
لِأَمرٍ ما يُقامُ لَهُ عَظيمِ
4. Grievous is what makes me weep for Kulayb
When he who did this deed is mentioned.
٤. جَسيماً ما بَكَيتُ بِهِ كُلَيباً
إِذا ذُكِرَ الفِعالُ مِنَ الجَسيمِ
5. I will drink the cup undiluted and serve it
In a cup that utters no word of blame.
٥. سَأَشرَبُ كَأسَها صِرفاً وَأَسقي
بِكَأسٍ غَيرِ مُنطِقَةٍ مُليمِ
