1. May God forbid our women weep
For one perished, or that we recoil from death,
١. مَعاذَ الإِلَهِ أَن تَنوحَ نِساؤُنا
عَلى هالِكٍ أَو أَن نَضِجَّ مِنَ القَتلِ
2. The clashing of swords with swords made lawful for us
A land of tents, of lofty tents and low,
٢. قِراعُ السُيوفِ بِالسُيوفِ أَحَلَّنا
بِأَرضٍ بَراحٍ ذي أَراكٍ وَذي أَثلِ
3. Of all possessions, naught remains for us
Save bodies stripped of lineage, bare of seed.
٣. فَما أَبقَتِ الأَيامُ مِنَ المالِ عِندَنا
سِوى جِذمِ أَذوادٍ مُحَذَّفَةِ النَسلِ
4. Three thirds of steeds; and tenths of our array;
Our food; and those we drive to slaughter.
٤. ثَلاثَةُ أَثلاثٍ فَأَثمانُ خَيلِنا
وَأَقواتُنا وَما نَسوقُ إِلى القَتلِ
