1. The lamp has been extinguished
On a night when the shooting stars faded

2. And the bond of revelry came undone
So there is no more singing or drinking

3. The hut is deserted with no companion
For the friends have gone

4. Each went his own way
Cloaking his sadness

5. The wine cup shattered
And the melody of the rebeck died

6. And upon the master poet of Jordan
They have erected the mausoleum

7. So Jordan mourns as if collapsing
From the enormity of the calamity

8. And its beauties cried until
Grief was not alleviated by prolonged crying

9. And Oman’s graceful gazelles
Bore bitter resentment

10. And the women of Jerash
Donned the black of robes and mantles

11. Weeping for you like kohl smeared eyes
Full of youth

12. The kohl was washed from eyes
And henna from their fingers

13. Grieving for you, so refined
Judicious and astute

14. Mourning Jordan’s champion
Mourning the free and revered poet

15. Mourning a sword that never
Failed a day or exhausted strikes

16. Sleep in bliss beneath eternal shade
In the highest heavenly chambers

17. You lived bestowed with honor
Lofty above the clouds

18. And bore the burden of shackles
Fearing no harm or ordeals

19. And sought grace for the weak against tyranny
Seeking no reward

20. When you saw people bow
Their necks to oppression

21. Mice before the mighty
Lions preying on the helpless

22. You denied them and relinquished a world
That is the abode of lies

23. Until destiny descended
And you turned from the phantom world

24. And came to be among the immortal
Free of every blemish

25. Tell me by your Lord what lies
Beyond death, beneath soil

26. Beyond those forms
Did you see light or mist?

27. Speak, for the veil has lifted
And masks have fallen

28. Ages have passed without
Mankind finding an answer

29. Such is the fate of everything living
In this lowly world, and herein lies deliverance

30. To a pit all are consigned
Vain hopes and ambition interred

31. No distinction in it between crowned kings
And slaves born to stirrups

32. All are enshrouded by fate
After life and its chaos

33. Except the light of genius
That shall never expire

34. It shall remain until the end of time
A flame for all who ignite their fires
