So the whites tremble in fear of you and the browns,

٤. أَلْقَى الإلهُ عَلَى الدُّنيا مَهَابَتَهُ
فالبِيضُ تَرْعدُ خوفاً منه والسُّمُرُ

5. We saw the superiority of Sun of the Faith transferred to you,
The news was true and reports correct,

٥. أرَيْتَنا فضلَ شمسِ الدِّينِ مُنْتَقِلاً
إليك منه وصَحَّ الخُبرُ والخَبَرُ

6. If you revive his traces after they were erased,
You are the Nile, reviving land and rain,

٦. إنْ تُحْيِ آثارَهُ مِنْ بَعْدِ ما دَرَسَتْ
فإنَّكَ النِّيلُ تُحْيي الأرضَ والمَطَرُ

7. If you are the best inheritor of him,
None disputes his inheritance but the vile,

٧. وإنْ تَكُنْ أنْتَ خيرَ الوارثينَ لَهُ
فما يُنَازِعكَ في ميراثِهِ بَشَرُ

8. If you succeed him in supremacy and merit,
The sun succeeds when the moon departs.

٨. وإنْ تَكُنْ في العُلا والفَضْلِ تَخْلُفُهُ
فالشَّمسُ يَخْلُفُهَا إنْ غابَتِ القَمَرُ

9. You shamed the masters of the times with forbearance,
They do not pardon a sin when able like your pardoning,

٩. أَخجَلتَ بالحِلْمِ ساداتِ الزَّمانِ فَلَمْ
يَعْفُوا كَعَفْوِكَ عَنْ ذَنْبٍ إذا قَدَرُوا

10. You conceal the shame they exposed,
And mend the bone they broke,

١٠. وَلَمْ تَزَلْ تَسْتُرُ العَيْبَ الذِي كَشَفُوا
ولم تَزَلْ تَجْبُرُ العَظْمَ الذِي كَسَرُوا

11. If the tongues of days could speak
They would praise your merits, new and old,

١١. لوْ أَنَّ أَلْسِنَةَ الأَيّامِ ناطِقَةٌ
أَثْنَتْ عَلَى فَضْلِكَ الآصالُ والبُكَرُ

12. You paved paths for people with no fatigue
That the walker fears no exhaustion or tearing upon,

١٢. شَرَعْتَ للنَّاسِ طُرقاً ما بها عُجَزٌ
يَخَافُ سالِكُها فيها ولا بُجَرُ

13. If walkers kept to them as you ordered
They would walk like a docile mare,

١٣. لو يَسْتَقِيمُ عليها السالكون بها
كما أمرتَ مشَتْ مَشْيَ المهَا الحُمرُ

14. Honor the sunborn Aydmar among heroes
For whom other heroes boast,

١٤. أَكْرِمْ بأَيْدمُرَ الشَّمْسِيِّ مِنْ بَطَلٍ
بِذِكْرِهِ في الوَغَى الأَبْطَالُ تَفْتَخِرُ

15. He is feared yet hoped for
As verses in listeners' hearts bring dread yet hope,

١٥. تَخافُ منه وتَرْجُوهُ كما فَعَلَتْ
في قَلْبِ سامِعِها الآياتُ والسُّوَرُ

16. The essence of being upon which existence arose
For without essences, forms cannot arise,

١٦. مَعْنَى الوجودِ الذي قامَ الوجودُ به
وهلْ بِغَيْرِ المَعاني قامَتِ الصُّوَرُ

17. His lances from his munificence pour rain
And his sword from his sharpness kindles flames,

١٧. بَنانُهُ مِنْ نَدَاهُ الغَيْثُ مُنْسَكِبٌ
وسَيْفُهُ مِنْ سُطاهُ النارُ تَسْتَعِرُ

18. His piety distracted him from worldly pleasures
And wakefulness scattered sleep from his eyes,

١٨. نَهَتْهُ عَنْ لَذَّةِ الدُّنْيا نَزَاهَتُهُ
وَشَرَّدَ النَّوْمَ مِنْ أجفانِهِ السَّهَرُ

19. Nothing wearies or bores him,
How can one without fatigue know boredom?

١٩. وليسَ يُضْجِرُهُ قَوْلٌ وَلا عَمَلٌ
وَكيفَ يُدْرِكُ مَنْ لا يَتْعَبُ الضَّجَرُ

20. He retires and awakes to running a kingdom,
Exhausting for creations a fraction of his load,

٢٠. يُمْسِي وَيُصْبِحُ في تَدْبِيرِ مَمْلَكَةٍ
أعْيا الخلائقَ فيها بعضُ ما يَزِرُ

21. Bearing responsibilities offered
To mountains, almost causing them to crack,

٢١. يَكْفِيهِ حَمْلُ الأَماناتِ التي عُرِضَتْ
على الجِبالٍ فكادَتْ منه تَنْفَطِرُ

22. He feared God so his subjects fear him,
And one is rewarded for what is sent and left behind,

٢٢. خافَ الإلهَ فخافَتْهُ رَعِيَّتُهُ
والمَرْءُ يُجْزَى بما يأتي وما يَذَرُ

23. The king of the world chose him to consult him
For he is both chosen and tested,

٢٣. واخْتَارَهُ مَلكُ الدُّنيا لِيَخْبُرَهُ
في مُلْكِهِ وهْوَ مُخْتارٌ ومُخْتَبَرُ

24. He cleansed the land of corruptors, leaving
No eye of theirs remaining, not a trace found,

٢٤. فَطَهَّرَ الأرضَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الفسادِ فلا
عَيْنٌ لَهُمْ بَقِيَتْ فيها ولا أثَرُ

25. And managed the kingdom so perfectly
Intellects fall short of grasping the simplest of it,

٢٥. ودَبَّر المُلْكَ تَدْبيراً يُقَصِّرُ عَنْ

26. When news of him reached enemies
The Franks died of dread and chaos,

٢٦. وحينَ طارت إلى الأعداء سُمْعَتُهُ
ماتَ الفرَنْجُ بِدَاءِ الخَوْفِ والتَّتَرُ

27. He cares not for enemies whose hearts
Terror and flight have conquered,

٢٧. فما يُبالي بأَعْداءٍ قُلوبُهُمُ
فيها تَمَكَّنَ منهُ الخوفُ والذُّعُرُ

28. Whenever we reminded of him in a land
Swords were sheathed, lacking use,

٢٨. وكل أرضٍ ذَكّرْناهُ بها غَنِيَتْ
عَنْ أنْ يُجَرِّدَ فيها الصارِمُ الذَّكَرُ

29. If his resolves mobilized from Egypt against enemies
Ports would be empty of ships and travelers,

٢٩. فلَوْ تُجَرَّدُ مِنْ مِصْرٍ عَزائِمُهُ
إلى العِدَا بَطَلَ البَيْكارُ والسَّفَرُ

30. Each day you see corpses from his blade
As if slaughtered in season, offerings piled,

٣٠. في كلِّ يَوْمٍ تَرَى القَتْلَى بِصَارِمهِ
كأَنَّما نُحِرَتْ في مَوسِمٍ جُزُرُ

31. His blade in every battlefield
Is a herald of death, needing no forewarning,

٣١. كَأَنَّ صارِمَهُ في كلِّ مُعْتَرَكٍ
نَذِيرُ مَوْتٍ خَلَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ النُّذُرُ

32. Thanks from a viceroy in his governance
His way of honoring people is renowned,

٣٢. شُكْراً لَهُ مِنْ وَلِيٍّ في وِلايَتِهِ
مَعْنَى كرامَتِه للناسِ مُشْتَهِرُ

33. Justice spread over subjects and soldiers
None complained of his justice, group after group,

٣٣. عَمَّ الرَّعِيَّةَ والأَجْنَادَ مَعْدَلَةً
فما شكا نَفَراً مِنْ عَدْلِهِ نَفَرُ

34. Their hearing and sights were delighted by him
A beautiful face and sweet fragrance,

٣٤. وسَرَّ أَسْمَاعَهُمْ منهُ وأعْيُنَهُمْ
وَجْهٌ جَميلٌ وذِكْرٌ طَيِّبٌ عَطِرُ

35. More redolent than pure musk was his gaze
As scent wafts from his sleeves, the flowers,

٣٥. تَأَرَّجَتْ عَنْ نَظِيرِ المِسْكِ نظْرَتُهُ
كما تَأَرَّجَ عَنْ أكمامِهِ الزَّهَرُ

36. Of a folk true to promises in supremacy
Neither betraying nor deceiving,

٣٦. مِنْ مَعْشَرٍ في العُلا أَوْفَوْا عُهُودَهمُ
وليسَ مِنْ مَعْشَرٍ خانُوا ولا غَدَرُوا

37. A noble clan, the world boasts of them
Present or absent, its ornament and pride,

٣٧. تُرْكٌ تَزَيَّنَتِ الدُّنيا بِذِكْرِهِمُ
فَهُمْ لها الحَلْيُ إنْ غابُوا وإنْ حَضَرُوا

38. Their exteriors match their noble interiors
Alike concealing and disclosing their thoughts,

٣٨. حَكَتْ ظواهرهُمْ حُسْناً بواطِنهُمْ
فَهُمْ سواءٌ أَسَرُّوا القَوْلَ أَوْ جَهَرُوا

39. Fair faces that bring night riding to battle
And light up the morn when traveling,

٣٩. بِيضُ الوجوهِ يَجُنُّ اللَّيْلُ إنْ رَكِبُوا
إلى الوغَى ويُضِيءُ الصُّبْحُ إنْ سَفَرُوا

40. Their wealth and status attract pursuers
Crowds following crowds to their abodes,

٤٠. تَسْعَى لأَبْوَابِهِمْ قُصَّادُ مالِهم
وجاهِهِمْ زُمَراً في إثْرِها زُمَرُ

41. Racing to supremacy like steeds unleashed
Theirs are the white, noble mares,

٤١. تَسَابَقُوا في العُلا سَبْقَ الجِيادِ لهُمْ
مِنَ الثناءُ الحُجولُ البِيضُ والغُرَرُ

42. All we hear of their virtues
Epitomizes those of Glory of the Faith,

٤٢. وَكلُّ شيءٍ سَمِعْنا مِنْ مناقِبِهِمْ
فمِنْ مَناقِبِ عِزِّ الدِّينِ مُخْتَصَرُ

43. My master, tales of his prowess
Are to me like tales for their pleasantness,

٤٣. مَوْلىً تَلَذُّ لنا أخْبارُ سُؤْدُدِهِ
كأنَّ أخْبارهُ مِنْ حُسْنِها سَمَرُ

44. How excellent what he amasses and spends
Like a sea from which pearls and gold are extracted,

٤٤. يا حُسْنَ ما يَجْمَعُ الدُّنيا ويُنْفِقُها
كالبَحْرِ يَحْسُنُ منه الوِرْدُ والصَّدَرُ

45. For every condition, a reward from his generosity
Each endeavor aware of his knowledge,

٤٥. لكلِّ شَرْطٍ جَزَاءٌ مِنْ مَكارِمِهِ
وكُلُّ مُبْتَدَإٍ منها له خَبَرُ

46. I have not composed any unprecedented praise
Except unprecedented generosity came to me,

٤٦. فما نَظَمْتُ مدِيحاً فيهِ مُبْتَكراً
إِلَّا أَتانِيَ جُودٌ منه مُبْتَكرُ

47. I speak truth in praising him, so his splendor flourished
His face unmarred by any blemish,

٤٧. صَدَقْتُ في مَدْحِهِ فازْدَادَ رَوْنَقُهُ
فما عَلَى وجْهِهِ مِنْ رِيبَةٍ قَتَرُ

48. His gifts enrich all the poor
So ask them of him, few and many,

٤٨. أغْنَتْ عَطاياهُ فَقْرَ الناسِ كلِّهِمِ
فسَلْهُمُ عَنْهُ إنْ قَلُّوا وَإنْ كَثُرُوا

49. Thus they praised him for what they knew
Goodness, how excellent their praise and thanks!

٤٩. لِذَاكَ أثْنَوْا عليه بالذِي عَلِمُوا
خيراً فيا حُسْنَ ما أَثْنَوا وَما شَكَرُوا

50. They said, "We found him a man of nobility within nobility,
Its shade and fruits sheltering us,

٥٠. قالوا وجَدْنَاهُ مِثْلَ الكَرْمِ في كَرَمٍ
يَفِيءُ منه علينا الظِّلُّ والثَّمَرُ

51. He never fails to aid volunteers
When undertaking good or oaths,

٥١. وما يَزالُ يُعِينُ الطائِعِينَ إذَا
تَطَوَّعُوا بِجَمِيلٍ أَوْ إذا نَذَرُوا

52. Who aids the obedient shares their reward
For what they omit and fulfill,

٥٢. وَمَنْ أَعَانَ أُولِي الطاعاتِ شَارَكَهُمْ
في أَجْرِ ما حَصَرُوا منه وما تَجَرُوا

53. No enjoined duty or tradition has come
Except in his shining registry inscribed,

٥٣. فما أتَى الناسُ مِنْ فَرْضٍ وَمِنْ سُنَنٍ
ففِي صَحِيفَتِهِ الغَرَّاءِ مُسْتَطَرُ

54. He performed Pilgrimage while settled, though Hijaz
Was held by folk neither performing nor intending it,

٥٤. فَحَجَّ وهْوَ مُقِيمٌ والحِجَازُ به
قَوْمٌ يُقِيمُونَ لا حَجُّوا ولا اعْتَمَرُوا

55. A group waged jihad in God's way
With his horses and Indian blades,

٥٥. وجَاهَدَتْ في سبيلِ اللَّهِ طائفةٌ
وخَيْلُها منه والهِنْدِيَّةُ البُتُرُ

56. He fed the hungry fasters, from
Severest privation their livers aflame,

٥٦. وَأَطْعَمَ الصَّائِمِينَ الجائِعِينَ وَمِنْ
فَرْطِ الخَصاصَةِ في أكْبَادِهِم سُعُرُ

57. No rising litany escapes him
A night he stands performing it, nor dawn,

٥٧. وَلَمْ تَفُتْهُ مِنَ الأَوْرَادِ ناشِئَةٌ
في لَيْلَةٍ قامَ يُحْيِيها وَلا سَحَرُ

58. He folds the days with fasting, aflame
And the nights folding in vigil, alight,

٥٨. يَطْوِي النَّهَارَ صِياماً وهْوَ مُضْطَرِمٌ
وَاللَّيْلَ يَطْوِي قِياماً وهْوَ مُعْتَكِرُ

59. His wealth is all for alms,
No fifth or tenth of it mentioned,

٥٩. ومالُهُ في زَكاةٍ كلُّهُ نُصُبٌ
لا الخُمْسُ فيه لَهُ ذِكْرٌ ولا العُشرُ

60. All his works are sincere for God,
Pure, no fraud mixing with his sincerity,

٦٠. أعمالُهُ كلُّها للَّهِ خالِصَةٌ
ونُصْحُهُ لم يُخالِطْ صَفْوَهُ كَدَرُ

61. How often tyranny against a people was returned!
And scheming befell those who schemed,

٦١. كم عادَ بَغْيٌ عَلَى قومٍ عليه بَغَوْا
وحاقَ مَكْرٌ بأَقْوَامٍ به مَكَرُوا

62. Nothing in earth escapes his knowledge
As if for existence he is hearing and sight,

٦٢. لَمْ يَخْفَ عَنْ عِلْمِهِ في الأرضِ خافِيَةٌ
كأَنَّهُ لِلْوُجُودِ السَّمْعُ والبَصَرُ

63. No schemer should suspect his ignorance
That anything on earth from him is hidden,

٦٣. فلا يَظُنّ مُرِيبٌ مِنْ جهالَتِهِ
بأَنَّ في الأرضِ شيءٌ عنه يَسْتَتِرُ

64. Some obstinate men of no morality rebelled,
Their nature misfortune, villainy, and flight,

٦٤. عَصَتْ عليه أُناسٌ لا خَلاقَ لَهُمْ
الشُّؤْمُ شِيمَتُهُمْ واللُّؤْمُ والدَّبَرُ

65. Donning rags they claimed to be Arab,
I said no, you are neither urban nor bedouin,

٦٥. تَلَثَّمُوا ثمَّ قالوا إننا عَرَبٌ
فقلتُ لا عَرَبٌ أنتمْ وَلا حَضَرُ

66. No compacts for you to honor, nor covenants,
Your abodes are neither hair nor wool,

٦٦. ولا عُهُودَ لكُمْ تُرْعَى ولا ذِمَمٌ
ولا بُيُوتُكُم شَعْرٌ وَلا وَبَرُ

67. What wilderness are your homes in?
Say, are they hair or wool?

٦٧. وأَيُّ بَرِّيَّةٍ فيها بُيُوتُكُم
وَهلْ هِيَ الشَّعْرُ قولوا لي أَمِ المَدَرُ

68. For the wretch they intend harm
Neither fleeing them nor departing brings escape,

٦٨. وَليسَ يُنْجِي امْرَأً رامُوا أَذِيَّتُهُ
منهمْ فِرارٌ فَقُلْ كَلَّا ولا وَزَرُ

69. All mankind complain of their harm
As their ways wound rock and ravine,

٦٩. يَشْكُو جميع بنِي الدُّنيا أَذِيَّتَهُمْ
فهمْ بِطُرْقِهِمُ الأحجارُ والحُفَرُ

70. They see all their wickedness as goodness
Caring not if people suffer, nor excuse them,

٧٠. يَرَوْنَ كلَّ قَبيحٍ مِنْهُمُ حَسَناً
وَلَمْ يُبالُوا أَلامَ الناسُ أَمْ عَذَرُوا

71. Due to their stupidity, insult profits them
Due to their wretchedness, fighting harms them,

٧١. مِنْ لُؤْمِ أحْسَابِهِمْ إنْ شاتَمُوا رَبحوا
وَمِنْ حَقَارَتِهِمْ إنْ قاتَلوا خَسِروا

72. When you saw that only might restrains them
And corrupters, when honored, wax bold,

٧٢. لَمَّا عَلِمْتَ بأنَّ الرِّفْقَ أَبْطَرَهمْ
والمُفْسِدُون إذا أَكْرَمْتَهُمْ بَطِرُوا

73. You deterred them with varied punishments,
Meet for the tyrannical, deterring,

٧٣. زَجَرْتَهُمْ بعقوباتٍ مُنَوَّعَةٍ
وفي العقوباتِ لِلطاغينَ مُزْدَجَرُ

74. As if they swore to God persistent in harm
Until subdued by force, unrelenting,

٧٤. كأَنّهم أَقْسَمُوا باللَّهِ أنَّهمُ
لا يَتْركونَ الأذى إِلَّا إذَا قُهِرُوا

75. Some rode poles till disemboweled,
Wishing they had been ritually slain,

٧٥. فَمَعْشَرٌ رَكِبُوا الأَوْتادَ فانقطعَتْ
أَمْعاؤُهم فَتَمَنَّوْا أَنَّهمْ نُحِرُوا

76. Others had limbs chopped segment by segment
Beyond any mending of thread and needle,

٧٦. ومَعْشَرٌ قُطِعَتْ أَوْصالُهمْ قِطَعاً
فما يُلَفِّقُها خَيْطٌ ولا إبَرُ

77. Others were crucified over steeds, boards
And wooden saddles gripping their bodies fast,

٧٧. ومَعْشَرٌ بالظُّبا طارتْ رؤُوسُهُمُ
عَنِ الجُسومِ فَقُلْنَا إنها أُكَرُ

78. And others their souls ransomed with riches
People said better than lifelong blindness,

٧٨. وَمَعْشَرٌ وُسِّطُوا مثْلَ الدِّلاءِ وَلمْ
تُرْبَطْ حِبَالٌ بها يَوْماً ولا بَكَرُ

79. Evil deaths they invited by their deeds
With Hellfire awaiting them in the beyond,

٧٩. وَمَعْشَرٌ سُمِّروا فوْقَ الجِيادِ وقدْ
شَدَّتْ جُسومَهُمُ الألواحُ وَالدُّسُرُ

80. Thus the staff learned, heeding your warnings,
And the heedless remembering when reminded,

٨٠. وآخَرُونَ فَدَوْا بالمالِ أنفُسَهُمْ
وقالتِ الناسُ خَيْرٌ مِنْ عَمىً عَوَرُ

81. Every man refrained from treachery
No woman nor man betraying after that,

٨١. مَوْتاتُ سَوْءٍ تَلَقَّوْها بما صَنَعُوا
وَمِنْ وَراءِ تَلَقِّيهِمْ لها سَقَرُ

82. If their state improved after corruption
Know that breakage may be repaired,

٨٢. وَقد تَأَدَّبَتِ المُسْتَخْدمون بهم
وَالغافلون إذَا ما ذُكِّرُوا ذَكَرُوا

83. If not for you, they would not make amends
For abusing the public, pardoning nor sparing,

٨٣. فَعَفَّ كلُّ ابنِ أُنْثَى عَنْ خِيانتهِ
فَلَمْ يَخُنْ نفسَهُ أُنْثَى وَلا ذكرُ

84. I would not after blaming them praise them
As if they believed after long disbelief,

٨٤. إنْ كانَ قد صَلَحَتْ مِنْ بعْدِ ما فَسَدَتْ
أَحوالُهمْ بِكَ إنَّ الكَسْرَ يَنْجَبِرُ

85. Differing of the pious does no harm
If upon Islam's nature they were nurtured,

٨٥. لَوْلاكَ ما عَدَلُوا مِنْ بَعْدِ جَوْرِهُمُ
عَلَى الرَّعايا ولا عَفُّوا وَلا انْحَصَرُوا

86. Exerting himself in God's pasture, diligent
Girding piety and fearing God,

٨٦. ولا شَكَرْتُهُم مِنْ بَعْدِ ذَمِّهِمُ
كأنهم آمَنُوا مِنْ بَعْدِ ما كَفَرُوا

87. He balanced nights and days remaining
As if mere moments, swift to pass,

٨٧. وكُنْتُ وصَّيْتُهُمْ أنْ يَحْذَروكَ كما
وصَّى الحكيمُ بَنِيهِ وَهْوَ مُحْتَضرُ

88. I fell before him in awe
People said a dying elder forgetful,

٨٨. وقلتُ لا تَقْرَبوا مالاً حَوَتْ يَدُهُ
فالفَخُّ يَهْرُبُ منه الطائر الحَذِرُ

89. My words fell short of praising him
Though I came with apologies sincere,

٨٩. وحاذِرُوا معه أنْ تَرْكَبُوا غَرَراً
فليسَ يُحْمَدُ مَنْ مركُوْبُهُ الغَرَرُ

90. Accept from your merit praise by
A weak elder whose effort falls short,

٩٠. ولا تَصَدَّوْا لما لم يرض خاطرُهُ
إنَّ التَّصدِّي لما لم يرضه خطَرُ

91. No flaw mars the bow for bending
If the arrow flies straight and cord stretched,

٩١. فبان نصحي لهُمْ إذ ماتَ ناظِرُهمْ
وَقد بَدَت لِلوَرَى فِي مَوتِهِ عِبَرُ

92. Wear the mantle of praise skillfully woven
That thinking intricately embroidered,

٩٢. مُقَدَّماتٌ أماتاهُ وأقْبَرَهُ
مَشاعِلِيَّانِ ما أَدَّوْا وَلا نَصَرُوا

93. Of a truthful poet whose trait is not lying
In what he says, no cluelessness nor bound,

٩٣. وجَرَّسُوهُ عَلَى النَّعْشِ الذي حَمَلُوا
مِنَ الفِراشِ إلَى القَبْرِ الذي حَفَرُوا

94. Meandering every valley praising you
Led by meanings excelling the mind’s grasp,

٩٤. يا سوءَ ما قَرَؤُوا مِنْ كلِّ مُخْزِيَةٍ
عَلَى جَنَازَتِهِ جَهْرَاً وما هَجَرُوا

95. He recites poetry for praise only
Naught else has his passion or fervor,

٩٥. وَكَبَّرُوا بَعْدَ تَصْغِيرٍ جَرَائمَهُ
وقَبَّحُوا ما طَوَوْا منها وما نَشَرُوا

96. No verse for a gazelle in the wild enthralls him
Nor song for a maiden with languid eyes,

٩٦. وكانَ جَمَّعَ أمْوالاً وَعَدَّدَها
وظَنَّهَا لِصُروفِ الدَّهْرِ تُدَّخَرُ

97. Your praise is free, no prices or wages
Sway him, though destitute his hands,

٩٧. فآذَنَتْ بِزَوالٍ عنه مُسْرِعَةً
كما يَزُولُ بِحَلْقِ العانَةِ الشَّعَرُ

98. Better to me than riches is praising the generous
Whose mention of my praise spreads in the world,

٩٨. وراحَ مِنْ خِدْمَةٍ صِفْرَ اليَدَيْنِ فقُل
لِلْعامِلينَ عليها بَعْدَه اعْتَبِروا

99. Yellowness of gold is the same if
My hands yellow while enriched the same,

٩٩. ما عُذْرُ ماشٍ مَشَى بالظُّلْمِ في طُرْقٍ
رَأى المُشاةَ عليها بَعْدَهُ عَبَرُوا

100. Remain as long as you wish in whatsoever rank,
Exalted, that the world in your age endures,

١٠٠. إذا تَفَكَّرْتَ في المُسْتَخْدمينَ بَدَا
منهم لِعَيْنَيْكَ ما لم يُبْدِهِ النَّظَرُ

101. May your nights fulfill what you hope of them,
Never transgressing your limits,

١٠١. ظَنُّوهُمُ عَمَرُوا الدُّنيا بِبَذْلِهمُ
وَإنما خَرَّبُوا الدُّنيا وما عَمَرُوا

102. Every organ of mine supplicates for you
God's responding through His bounty awaited,

١٠٢. فطهِّرِ الأرضَ منهم إنَّهمْ خَبَثٌ
لوْ يَغْسِلُونَهُمُ بالبحرِ ما طهُرُوا

١٠٣. نِيرانُ شَرٍّ كَفانَا اللَّهُ شَرَّهُمُ
لا يَرْحَمُونَ وَلا يُبقُون إنْ ظَفِرُوا

١٠٤. فاحْذَرْ كِبارَ بَنيهِمْ إنهمْ قُرُمٌ
وَاحْذَرْ صِغَارَ بَنيهمْ إنَّهم شَرَرُ

١٠٥. فالفيلَ تَقْتُلُه الأَفْعَى بِأَصْغَرِها
فيها ولم تخشَهُ منْ سِنِّها الصِّغَرُ

١٠٦. واضرِبهُم بَقَناً مثلِ الحديدِ بهمْ
فليسَ من غَيرِ ضَرْبٍ يَنْفَعُ الزُّبُرُ

١٠٧. ولا تَثِقْ بِوَفاءٍ مِنْ أَخِي حُمُقٍ
فالحُمْقُ دَاءٌ عَياءٌ بُرْؤُه عَسِرُ

١٠٨. مِنْ كلِّ مِنْ قَدْرُهُ في نَفْسِهِ أَبَداً
مُعَظَّمٌ وَهوَ عند الناسِ مُحْتَقَرُ

١٠٩. يَصُدُّ عنكَ إذَا استَغْنَى بِجانبِهِ
وَلا يَزُورُكَ إِلَّا حِينَ يَفْتَقِرُ

١١٠. كأنَّه الدَّلوُ يعلو حينَ تَمْلَؤُهُ
ماءً وَيُفْرِغُ ما فيهِ فَيَنْحَدِرُ

١١١. وَالدَّهْرُ يَرْفَعُ أَطْرَافاً كما رَفَعَتْ
أَذْنَابَها لِقَضَاءِ الحاجَةِ البَقَرُ

١١٢. حَسْبُ المَحَلَّةِ لَمَّا زال َ ناظِرُها
أن زَالَ مُذْ زَالَ عنها البُؤْسُ والضَّرَرُ

١١٣. وَأنَّ أَعْمالَها لَمَّا حَللْتَ بها
تَغارُ مِنْ طِيبِها الجَنَّاتُ والنُّهُرُ

١١٤. وأَهْلَهَا في أَمانٍ مِنْ مَساكِنِها
مِنْ فَوْقِهِمْ غُرَفٌ مِنْ تَحتِهِمْ سُرُرُ

١١٥. مَلأتَ فِيها بُيُوتَ المَالِ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ
وَفِضَّةٍ صُبَراً يَا حَبَّذَا الصُّبَرُ

١١٦. وَالمالُ يُجْنَى كما يُجْنَى الثمارُ بها
حتّى كأنَّ بَنِي الدُّنيا لها شَجَرُ

١١٧. وتابَعَتْ بعضَها الغَلَّاتِ في سَفَرٍ
بعضاً إلَى شُوَنٍ ضاقَتْ بهاالخُدُرُ

١١٨. وَسِيقَتِ الخَيْلُ لِلأَبْوَابِ مُسْرَجَةً
لَمْ تُحْص عَدَّاً وَتُحْصَى الأَنْجُمُ الزُّهُرُ

١١٩. وَالهُجْنُ تَحْسِبُها سُحْباً مُفَوَّفَةً
في الحَقِّ منها فضاء الجَوِّ مُنْحَصِرُ

١٢٠. وكلُّ مُقْتَرَحٍ ما دارَ في خَلَدٍ
يأْتِي إليكَ به في وقتهِ القَدَرُ

١٢١. وَما هَمَمْتَ بِأَمْرٍ غير مَطْلَبِهِ
إِلّا تَيَسَّرَ مِنْ أسبابهِ العَسِرُ

١٢٢. والعاملونَ عَلَى الأموال ما عَلِمُوا
مِنْ أيِّما جهة يأْتي وما شَعَرُوا

١٢٣. وما أُرَى بَيتَ مالِ المسلمينَ دَرَى
مِنْ أَيْنَ تأتي لهُ الأكياسُ وَالبِدَرُ

١٢٤. هذا وما أحَدٌ كلَّفْتَهُ شَطَطاً
بمَا فَعَلْتَ كأنَّ الناسَ قد سُحِروا

١٢٥. بل زَادَهم فيكَ حُبّاً ما فَعَلْتَ بهِم
مِنَ الجَمِيلِ وَذَنْبُ الحُبِّ مُغْتَفَرُ

١٢٦. فإنْ شَكَوْا بِغْضَةً مِمَّنْ مَضَى سَلَفَتْ
فما لِقَلْبٍ عَلَى البَغْضَاءِ مُصْطَبَرُ

١٢٧. فالصَّبْرُ مِنْ يَدِ مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَهُ عَسَلٌ
وَالشَّهْدُ مِنْ يَدِ مَنْ أَبْغَضْتَهُ صَبرُ

١٢٨. لقدْ جُبِلْتَ بمَكْروهٍ عَلَى أَحَدٍ
حُكْماً يُخَالِفُهُ نَصٌّ وَلا خَبرُ

١٢٩. رُزِقْتَ ذُرِّيَّةً ضاهَتْكَ طَيِّبَةً
مِنْ طِينَةٍ غارَ منها العَنْبَرُ العَطِرُ

١٣٠. فليَنهِكَ اليومَ منها الفضلُ حين غَدا
دينُ الإلهِ بِسَيْفِ الدِّينِ مُنْتَصِرُ

١٣١. عَلَى صفاتِكَ دَلَّتْنا نَجَابَتُهُ
وَبانَ مِنْ أَيْنَ ماءُ الوَرْدِ يُعْتَصَرُ

١٣٢. مِيزانُهُ في التُّقَى مِيزَانُ مَعْدَلَةٍ
وَحِكْمَةٍ لا صَغىً فيها وَلا صِغرُ

١٣٣. مَشَى صِرَاطاً سَوِيَّاً مِنْ دِيَانَتِهِ
فما يَزالُ بِأمْرِ اللَّهِ يَأْتَمِرُ

١٣٤. تُرْضِيكَ في اللَّهِ أَعْمالٌ وَتُغْضِبُهُ
وَمَا بَدا لِيَ أَمْرٌ مِنْكُمَا نُكرُ

١٣٥. قالت ليَ النّاسُ ماذَا الخُلْفُ قلتُ لهمْ
كما تَخَالَفَ موسى قَبْلُ والخَضِرُ

١٣٦. أما عَصَى أَمْرَ عِنْدَ سَفْكِ دَمٍ
ما في شَرِيعَةِ موسى أنَّه هَدَرُ

١٣٧. وقد تعاطى ابنُ عَفَّانٍ لأُسرَتِهِ
وما تعاطَى أبو بَكْرٍ ولا عُمَرُ

١٣٨. ولَنْ يضِيرَ أُولي التَّقْوَى اختلافُهُم
وهم على فِطْرَةِ الإسلامِ قد فُطِرُوا

١٣٩. مُشَمِّرٌ في مَراعِي اللَّهِ مجتَهِدٌ
وبالعَفافِ وَتَقْوَى اللَّهِ مُؤتَزِرُ

١٤٠. زانَ اللَّياليَ وَالأَيّامَ إذْ بَقِيَتْ
كأنّها غُرَرٌ في إثْرِها طُرَرُ

١٤١. وَقَعتُ بَينَ يَدَيْهِ مِنْ مَهابَتِهِ
وقالتِ الناسُ مَيْتٌ مَسَّهُ كِبَرُ

١٤٢. وَقَصَّرَتْ كلماتي عَنْ مَدَائِحهِ
وقد أتيتُ مِنَ الحالَيْنِ أعتَذِرُ

١٤٣. فاقبَل بِفَضْلِكَ مَدْحاً قد أَتَاكَ به
شيخٌ ضَعِيفٌ إلى تَقْصِيرِهِ قِصَرُ

١٤٤. فما عَلَى القَوْسِ مِنْ عَيْبٍ تُعَابُ به
إنِ انْحَنَتْ وَاستقامَ السَّهْمُ والوتَرُ

١٤٥. وَالْبَسْ ثَنَاءً أَجَادَتْ نَسْجَهُ فِكَرٌ
يَغَارُ في الحُسْنِ منه الوشْيُ والحِبَرُ

١٤٦. مِنْ شاعرٍ صادِقٍ ما شانهُ كَذبٌ
فيما يقولُ وَلا عِيٌّ وَلا حَصَرُ

١٤٧. يَهِيمُ في كلِّ وَادٍ منْ مدائِحِهِ
عَلَى معانٍ أَضَلَّتْ حُسْنَها الفِكَرُ

١٤٨. لا يَنْظِمُ الشِّعْرَ إِلَّا في المَديحِ وَما
غيرُ المديحِ لُهُ سُؤْلٌ وَلا وَطَرُ

١٤٩. ما شاقَهُ لِغَزالٍ في الظّبا غَزَلٌ
وَلا لِغانِيَةٍ في طَرفِها حَوَرُ

١٥٠. مَديحُهُ فيكَ حرٌّ لَيسَ يَملِكُهُ
منَ الجَوائِزِ أثَمَانٌ وَلا أُجرُ

١٥١. إنَّ الأَديبَ إذا أهْدَى كَرَائِمَهُ
فَقَصْدُهُ شَرَفُ الأنسابِ لا المَهرُ

١٥٢. تبّاً لِقَوْمٍ قدِ اسْتَغْنَوا بِما نَظَموا
مِنِ امْتِدَاحِ بَني الدُّنْيا وَما نَثَرُوا

١٥٣. فَلَوْ قَفَوْتُ بأَخْذِ المالِ إثرَهم
لَعَوَّقَتْني القَوافِي فيكَ والفِقَرُ

١٥٤. خَيْرٌ مِنَ المال عِنْدِي مَدْحُ ذِي كَرَمٍ
ذِكْرِي بِمَدْحِي لهُ في الأرضِ يَنْتَشِرُ

١٥٥. فالصُّفْرُ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ عِنْدِي وإنْ صفِرَتْ
يَدِي وَإنْ غَنِيَتْ سِيَّان والصُّفُرُ

١٥٦. بَقِيتَ ما شِئْتَ فيما شِئْتَ مِنْ رُتَبٍ
عَلِيَّةٍ عُمُرُ الدُّنيا بِها عَمِرُوا

١٥٧. وَبَلَّغَتْكَ اللّيالِي ما تُؤَمِّلُهُ
وَلا تَعَدَّتْ إلَى أَيَّامِكَ الغِيَرُ

١٥٨. وَقد دَعَتْ لكَ منِّي كُلُّ جَارِحَةٍ
وبالإِجابَةِ فَضْلُ اللَّهِ يُنْتَظَرُ
