1. Time estranged me from its springs,
Yet its downpour came to me with the clouds,
١. نأَى بي عَن موارِدِهِ زَمَاني
فَأَرْسَلَ لي نَداهُ مَعَ السَّحَابِ
2. Never before have I seen generosity like the generosity of its hands,
It came knocking on my door with good tidings.
٢. وَلَمْ أَرَ قَبْلَ جُودِ يَدَيْهِ جُوداً
أتَاني طَارِقاً بِالخَيْرِ بَابي
3. The rat had left and sang happily,
In spite of my remoteness and exile from my dwellings.
٣. وَكانَ الفَأْرُ فارَ قَنَا وَغَنَّى
بِرَغْمِي عَن مُنازَلتي اغْتِرابي
4. How could one who runs his house by the Book,
Stay where there are spies,
٤. وَكَيفَ يُقِيمُ في بَيْتٍ طَوَانا
طَوَانا عِنْدَهُ طَيَّ الكِتابِ
5. And reckon us as knights when he sees us,
Roaming helplessly in his courtyard?
٥. وَيَحْسِبُنا فَوارِسَ إذْ يَرانا
بِسَاحتهِ نَحُومُ علَى اللُّبَابِ
6. The prince sent us money to free us,
With which he loosed the shackles from our necks.
٦. وَقَدْ بَعَثَ الأَمِيرُ لَنَا مُغَلاًّ
بِهِ قَدْ فَكَّ أَغْلالَ الرِّقَابِ
7. When the sun of religion was absent from me,
Doubt called me to distrust him.
٧. وَلَمَّا غَابَ شَمْسُ الدِّينِ عَنّي
دَعَاني الظَّنُّ فِيهِ لارْتيابي
8. I stay up at night saying is it wheat or barley?
Your gift came answering me.
٨. وَبِتُّ أَقُولُ قَمحٌ أمْ شَعيرٌ
فَبادَرَني عَطَاؤُكَ بِالجَوَابِ
9. Goodness came to me pearly,
Outshining a necklace around the neck of a maiden.
٩. وَجَاءَ البِرُّ بُرّاً لُؤْلُؤياً
يُباهِي العِقْدَ في جِيدِ الكَعَابِ
10. So the guest visited after the harshness of my quarter,
And my knocker perceived the fertility of my threshold.
١٠. فَزارَ الضيَّفُ بَعْدَ جَفاءِ رَبْعي
وَأَيْقَنَ طَارِقي خِصْبَ الجَنابِ
