4. Peace unto you, O bride of the water! Verily I
Love you and do not tarry long with you

And leave your meadows fascinated

As if I had drunk heady wine

Turn in panicked retreat and flee away

17. By your Lord, O lights, what have you done
To a wakeful soul accustomed to the gloom?

18. By your Lord, O billows which smash continually
Upon the shores beating them down

19. I came seeking solace, peace of mind from you
Chanting hymns of peace on your shores

20. I see you and you open up new sorrows
When I hoped to heal old wounds

21. I wavered and my composure left me, else
Why these burning tears suddenly flow?

22. O land that harbors me, how can I forget
My days in you, as lad or fully grown?

23. On days when I came to you downcast or ill
Sensing the distance from my people swell

24. Dragging heavily my feet, gathering
Together remnants of my will

25. My maladies and pains severe
Had drained my blood and gnawed my bones arising

26. I see you and reck not of death
Content beside your shore to end my days

27. How many friends have come and left me
Like transient pilgrims honoring as they passed!

28. Life passes and I know not
If days have gone or years have slipped away

29. I knew you as winter cast its shadow
And hung its clouds around your hills

30. I knew you when summer clad you
And the radiant sunlight beamed and brightly burned

31. I knew you when raving storms lashed out
And spread their darkness o’er your laughing skies

32. I knew you as immaculate seagulls formed a ring
And hovered gracefully like flocks of doves

33. I knew you still, with dawn fast asleep
As if the sea had muted and became completely numb

34. I knew you as a friend in every state
The wine and bread that nourished my soul

35. Your salt is in my blood, your scent still lingering
This voice I always hear ring out clear

36. Come boulder of old times, answer me
Does your standing and waiting have any cause?

37. You suffered the same fate that we have borne
From days - assault and violent blows

38. It's as if for all mankind you are the bull's eye
And here are multitudes seeking some great feat

39. If they fail they scatter and retreat
If they venture, thronging close they come to thee

Let us worship there on bended knees

Why enforce on stone such courtesies?

43. By your Lord, where are dreams of bygone days
And years we spent complacent, asleep?

44. Where is that golden spring of yesteryear
When love was beauty, joy and harmony?
