1. I set up for them a signpost of remembrance,
And granted them the most beneficial treasure as spoils.

2. And I made myself a servant to the path,
By which the people of God wander upon the earth and in the heavens.

3. So oh people of love and the full cup!
Come drink this melody as it sings.

4. I have extracted for you the pure wine of God,
So die intoxicated by it, for intoxication is no sin.

5. The people of righteousness wandered by it before us,
So wander among the people, confused.

6. You see them drunk, the group dispersing their understanding,
And the light of mystic knowledge folds it in oceans of blindness.

7. I have filled a cup for you with refined wine,
And strummed my strings and made the foreign eloquent.

8. And I sang of the intoxication of all the Messengers,
Approaching the King’s court with an offering.

9. Who is like me, and whose drink is my drink,
With all the Prophets as my boon companions?

10. The Friend [Abraham] wandered by it before me and Moses,
Then Jesus and the companion of the Qur’an.

11. This is my state and this is my station,
So recognize me and deny my recognition!

12. With the light of Your face, O Light of the heavens,
Ignite the lamps of my recognition with my torches.

13. And fill my heart with Your love and attract my spirit
From between the oceans of my delusions and heedlessness!

14. This is the sacred fire and valley,
So take off the two sandals and the meanness and put them on!

15. You will find guidance or an ember—
Do not go beyond that this night has become still.

16. God set out the roads before my eyes and made plain
My paths as oceans and my ship.

17. What distracted me from God
Except my evil self-command and my poor certainty?

18. Lord, rescue me! For darknesses have covered me,
I stayed in them with the bargaining of the cheated.

19. You are the Light of lights, the light of my certainty
In my worldly life with clear light!
