1. The approach of death steals our lives away,
And our lives rush on towards the end.

2. The soul plays heedlessly above the current of loss,
If only it had beenware of the current!

3. It settled for vanity and empty embellishment,
Like a bird perched at the edge of an abyss.

4. What deludes man to delight in
His worldly life, though it is the source of sorrows?

5. The arrogant stumble in their idle pursuits,
Amusing themselves with claws and fangs.

6. She has revealed her secrets and proclaimed openly
Her flaws throughout the ages.

7. Nothing remains of her changing conditions
In our estimation except denial.

8. She exhausted her wares and sold nothing
Of real value, nor lied to the merchants.

9. Buildings crumble into her ruin
Like moths into consuming flames.

10. She runs recklessly towards her desires
Over the debris of collapsed buildings.

11. She laid her traps and forewarned of loss,
Yet we are deaf to all warnings.

12. She was created for the wisdom she was created for,
And she continues to follow the call of the Compeller.

13. Bound by the yoke of destiny, led
By the decree of the Chosen.

14. He has written permanence exclusively for Himself
By slaying the living and withering the blossoms.

15. When you contemplate your worldly life you’ll find
That life itself excuses transgressions.

16. Caught between battles, hoping
For a remainder for those who see.

17. If shared, the pious would abandon
The army of death, even virtuous souls.

18. O stroke of death, you have afflicted our elite
And left our nation without its best!

19. Not to mention the extinguishing of the lights of guidance,
Darkness has overwhelmed, in which the guided are lost.

20. Not to mention the suppression of the learned and pious,
For religion cannot survive without its devoted scholars.

21. Not to mention the killing of the valiant knights,
For nothing remains of valor or protection of neighbors.

22. Woe! It has emptied the lands of loved ones;
They were successors to the Way of the Chosen One.

23. Woe! Where are its heavens and its stars?
Its suns have gone like yesterday's caravan.

24. It has taken every finest polished pearl,
Each a towering mountain peak.

25. The pillars of faith, its axis and balance,
The oceans of nobility, the most luminous of stars.

26. The universes shine with their mystical knowledge
As the sun lights up the horizons of all lands.

27. They were consumed by glorification and chanting praises,
And extolling the Majestic in the late night hours.

28. When darkness descends, their banner is obscured,
They soar to the Kingdoms bearing mysteries.

29. If darkness prostrates across the sky,
They prostrate upon the earth like unmoving mountains.

30. Weeping split open their hearts, as though
They had placed the clouds in place of their lashes.

31. They offered their souls in sacrifice, and found their joy
In cycles of prayer and remembrance.

32. They encompassed Sacred Law, Truth, Gnosis and Perfection
Within their purest beings.

33. They are the salvation of creation, their secret
Is the sustenance of souls and the source of light.

34. Fate has transported them from the abode of annihilation,
And they came to rest in endless bliss.

35. They walked the path of righteousness in life and death,
For they succeeded in following the way of the righteous.

36. They have gone, and for those left behind
The earth is but dust after their trace is gone.

37. O Death, you have finished off loved ones, so be sparing
If you have pity on the flowing tears of the free.

38. With those righteous ones you were honored,
With those righteous ones you triumphed!

39. I was helpless when calamity struck,
And they, when the path was obscured, were my guiding stars.

40. You took the al-Kathm al-Deen and snatched the heavens away,
So the flowing tears poured down in lament.

41. And you took the hearts of the party of Muhammad -
What loss in that taking!

42. No horror on the Day of Resurrection will be greater
Than the horror of this mournful eulogy for the Leader of the Righteous.

43. Scholar of the age, pillar of knowledge, treasury of mysteries,
Beacon whose light filled the void.

44. Lion of battle, epitome of virtue, who raised
The banner and ignited the beacons.

45. Savior of the Bisitun, teacher of the world,
Protector of the oppressed, my Master and intimate friend.

46. Guardian of the precinct of Islam, its authority,
Sword of the faith that cuts sharp.

47. Ocean of knowledge and perfection, his deeds
Righteous through moments of retreat and advance.

48. As-Sulami, my father Muhammad, exalted in name,
A towering mountain of glory, shining moon.

49. It marches on, frightening and disturbing,
While the night grows dark and the wolves howl.

50. Wait! Bold guardian of righteousness, what
Horrifying and dreadful events have you left behind?

51. You established it then empowered it, but then you abandoned it -
How prolonged has been your absence from the journey!

52. Return to it, though few remain to protect it.
Return, your life I implore - O stranger to your land!

53. Return to Islam, complete its victory,
For glory comes through the resolve of its supporters.

54. Return, for righteousness has been widowed -
Have mercy on your orphan, the religion of the Lord.

55. Return and witness how the swords have wept,
And the honey bees, the pens, and the pages.

56. Return, though I do not think you have bartered
Your station with your Lord for the company of evildoers.

57. I call you to clarity though you are its utmost,
My pact with you, passionate defender.

58. I call you to the cause you are called to
By the resolve of men and pride of the noble.

59. I call you to the path shining bright
In view of the wise and piercing eyes.

60. I call you, as my hands are emptied
Of all who might substitute and guard the reserve.

61. I call you, if you hear my prayer,
With words of guidance and warning.

62. I call you for holy war and you sufficed alone
As a force in its decisive moments.

63. I call you to the Qur'an, reveal its mysteries
And clarify its obscurities.

64. I call you to the brilliant Model, it has lost
Sight of its purposes and wisdom.

65. I call you to consensus, rulings, religions,
Remembrance and commemoration.

66. Alas no return! For the tablets of stone
Now cover you with their inscriptions.

67. They travel the lands after their companions are gone,
And the sorrow of my loss in you endures.

68. O dawn, hide your light from us
And don the mourning clothes, O horizon of light!

69. Two noble books that guided to righteousness
Have increased my heart's unrest through their loss.

70. You were my supporter; I had the patience of granite -
But in my patience, and in my arms, I was struck.

71. You granted me resilience to withstand my calamity,
Yet today I have no fortitude or acceptance of fate.

72. Let alone accepting fate and finding peace
In that the Ordained is inevitable.

73. And that man is prey to the claws
Of events under the grip of fate.

74. No tear has left my eye but I have seen
Its equal from a sympathy or a consolation.

75. No mourning woman listens to her neighbor mourning -
She prepares her own mourning in the house.

76. Tell yourself you will live a long life,
Yet it is a stretch until the final place.

77. Those misfortunes hunt their prey,
It matters not whether awake or asleep.

78. I examined the nature of circumstances with my inner sight,
And probed with insight all that destiny decrees.

79. I saw the blessing of life is beneficence in bereavement,
And solace in submitting to the Lord’s decree.

80. O You who melted the rock with anguish over loss,
Whom have you left to the care of the noble ones?

81. You distributed grief between homeland and religion,
Apportioning it like acts of worship in intervals.

82. You called to Islam with utter sincerity -
The clear-sighted remain loyal to this call.

83. Loyal to you, the knights of the Yemeni lion
And the Nizar lion, since the days of martyrdom.

84. They loved death and struggled for guidance
Since the days of (the battles of) Siffeen and Dar.

85. You trained their ribs in the hot coals of wrath,
Out of love for their Lord and fear of hellfire.

86. They were angry for God, so they exercised restraint,
United upon the guidance of Umar ibn al-Khattab.

87. Certitude filled their hearts, so amidst certitude
They deemed the gravest dangers insignificant.

88. The resolve of its pillars was their restraint -
Religion they maintained, dishonor they disdained.

89. They sold their souls to please their Lord,
Profitable was their sale, and excellent the Buyer!

90. They offered themselves to bear the burdens of leadership,
Two noble scions equipped for the task.

91. Yours is grace, nobility and piety,
Your shining forehead reveals the light of daybreak.

92. Heir of the laudable deeds of the sons of Kaʿb,
Inheritor from your purified ancestors.

93. You assumed the imamate - fully capable - from predecessor to successor,
You picked fruits from the most splendid trees.

94. Its rulers recognized you as the one to establish order and adorn its crown,
Though long they were in denial.

95. It sought refuge in you so you gave it refuge and sustained it,
The exemplar of balance and justice.

96. It surrendered to your vision,
Eternal favor from your guiding star.

97. With resolve and discretion you led it,
Achieving miracles that dazzled sights.

98. A blossom between the Sulamis and the Peaceful One,
Raised among its protective noble brothers.

99. She could not fully give thanks until she regained
Patience for the loss of the patient and thankful one.

100. Patience, O Leader of Muslims, for it
Is fated that the Ordained affects all creation.

101. Patience, for patience and emulating you
Is incumbent, even destiny's rulings.

102. May God have mercy on beloved ones who have departed,
And grief for them remained my inconstant companion.

103. It was not in my hopes to remain after them,
To live in longing and remembrance.

104. But events claim their time,
And fate arrives precisely.

105. They turned away from worldliness, and I have turned in passion -
Vastly different is their abode from mine.

106. The Maidens weep for them, for those who were virtuous,
While they smile at the wide-eyed maidens of Paradise.

107. I am condemned to never cease lamenting their traces
As long as my eyes rain tears like the solid mountains.

108. I grieve and my thoughts keep flowing
With sorrows and pains.

109. Their memory is my solace, and the cure of my heart,
Through love of them the fires within are extinguished.

110. In their lives and their deaths is their mystery
That conveys its gifts to my innermost being.

111. They have gone, and after them came the Sulami
To revive tradition with his flowing speech.

112. The gardens regained vitality and brilliance
With the blossoming of the Radiant Model, not just flowers.

113. Fate destined him to the House of Eternity,
And excellent the house that replaced his house!

114. God gave life to his tomb with spirit and sweet herbs,
With roots and seeds.

115. O year, do not distance the deceased, the crown of faith, the knot of glory,
The affliction is tremendous, shocking.

116. O year, do not repeat your blows!
Your one strike for the Compeller is enough.

117. Have mercy on the people of God, accumulated
Dangers have overwhelmed dangers.

118. O year, you have shattered the edifice of faith
Like a fire with spreading flames and sparks.

119. You extinguished the brilliant celestial body that filled the sky with light,
And brought the darkness of sorrows.

120. You sealed for him the finest end as he met His Lord,
Welcomed for the honor of the pure.

121. He renounced the world, starving his stomach of it
Save what was apportioned by the Lord.

122. O You who answered the two calls to his Lord!
Why do you not reply to my call and visit?

123. The covenants of Islam lack resonance after you,
And your legacy glitters like the stars at night.

124. You sanctified Gowharshad and Mashhad,
The worlds of light envied it for your sake.

125. The shrine thrives alongside life, but alas
After death, when will it be my pilgrimage site?

126. What joy to rub my brow
Upon that fragrant, perfumed earth!

127. O promised one of the Merciful, what station
And fellowship did you attain in Eden?

128. You dwell securely among the stations of martyrs
Until you were satisfied our cries subsided.

129. You took a single bound to the realm of obedience like a bird,
And entered the precincts of Jaʿfar al-Tayyar.

130. You sold life and attained a profitable sale,
Though life kept its loss from us.

131. By God, what a tradition it is to herald you,
Yet for us it burns like fire in a tempest!

132. Its date - how long will the love of loss endure?
Patience is best, O wise one.
