1. What do you want from this miserable life that you suffer it
Don't you see how its ways destroy it

2. Tomorrow it never keeps a promise even if it promised
It betrayed you even if it made peace, for war hides within it

3. You cannot trust it even if you try caressing it
Nor feel assured of the sincerity of its affections

4. It's magic, deceit, and sorrows are its adornment
So beware if it entices you with its tricks and allures

5. My heart, flee from it, it is sedition
Even if it calls you, even if its claims are tempting

6. It lies in its claims, it's hypocritical
And the meanings in its verses testify against it

7. It shows you beauty but destruction lies beneath that beauty
Oh you who desire it, haven't its traits become clear

8. We seek it knowingly, aware of its ways
And settle for it even if its ways are miserable

9. What a disobedient, awful mother, that hugs us
With poisonous snakes, fed on its nectar

10. Evil is the abode, yet we cannot stop befriending it
How strange is the soul that loves those who oppose it

11. People compete over it, and it is a sorceress
With their fancy, and they fancy perishing through it

12. They reap from it as much as their passions dictate
And they did not gain except its freely given gifts

13. Who did its nightly visitors not ambush
And which soul avoided its afflictions?

14. It left the land's people embittered with its havoc
No vengeance takes place, no aid suffices against it

15. It terrifies them with an allure too glorious for beauty
Yet it is the snares it reveals and hides

16. People were not heedless of its faults
But its joys appealed to them

17. The insightful judge it by its fickleness
That living alongside it will destroy it

18. An ogre that takes different forms, its essence is deception
Cunning, and none heed its wronging of people

19. We strive toward an end through it, and it knocks us down
Toppling is unavoidable in its course

20. And if we get used to it, however bad it becomes
The resolute one does not befriend it

21. How strange to befriend one that ground our fathers down
And now grinds us between its fangs

22. To settle for false play without trust
Or safety, not a soul it rejuvenates

23. One who avoids it and fights it is not harmed
It will never make peace with one who opposes it

24. It has no mercy on a child when its father abandons it
Nor on the bereaved, even if their misery melts it

25. It does not silence houses of weeping and screaming
Nor graves from being stuffed inside it

26. We walk past roads filled with orphans
Not thinking of those who used to shelter them

27. We let our eyes wander while doors are closed
Homes vacant and time wears them out

28. Where are those who sang, making it their home?
I think they are in the earth's layers, shrouded by it

29. Where are those we knew, where do they stay?
Where are past generations, whose songs remain?

30. Where are the dear souls we used to befriend?
Where are loved ones we weep and eulogize?

31. Where are kings it revolved around
Or who rivaled it or opposed it?

32. Where are the intimate, the neighbors, what did
The nights' daughters do to them in their quarrel?

33. If the dead could speak, their speech would be:
Death's calamity has coursed among us with its ways

34. Their bones decayed, even their traces vanished
As dust for winds to scatter in gusts

35. Not a handful of earth but holds their remains
So tread gently on its dwelling place

36. We build palaces, yet their clay is from a corpse
Delusion! And we plow earth they were shredded in

37. People's shoulders do not rest a moment
From burdens, nor do mourners rest within it

38. From dawn's raid to dusk, it reaps souls
Endlessly harvesting until none remain

39. And we follow them, headed to their fate
While the thirst of the grave calls us, and we answer

40. With unseeing eyes and heedless souls
And provisions, a sin to the future we head to

41. And the soul's greed for what it craves has prevailed
Over prudence and hopes have misguided it

42. This is not how the wise have acted, so wake up
From heedlessness and blindness of its ways

43. Truly, nor did the righteous take its path
They walked strictly, from life and what is in it

44. They pulled back from its fancy, patient over what
It pretends, which is vanity it flaunts

45. Do not think well of it, for it is filled
With betrayal, nor follow its claims

46. So the free wise one is he who can, with his indifference
Take the path of leaving the abode it woos from

47. It calls for caution but gloats in its dress
Debasing the ignorant, who do not recognize it

48. The learned saw a time clearly
When depending on it during its days is ruinous

49. So they rolled up their sleeves, drove their souls
Like cattle keepers, away from its pasture

50. It tempted them but they saw betrayal in it
Other than the path to their Lord within it

51. What do they want from it, when it bares
The sword of horrors, uncaring to its people?

52. It laid the trap of ruin beneath its glamour
None were trapped by it save those desiring it

53. It hides malice, feigning joy
But to the sighted it was clear, hiding

54. None were saved from it but those who saw through it
And none were deluded by it but the lost

55. They rejected goodness of deeds and followed
Rejection and did not walk its straight path

56. It was in their nature not to be seduced
By the bloom which snakes of life inject in it

57. So they fled to God from a life whose trade is
Loss, sorrow, and evils that follow it

58. They saw with certainty that God disgraced it
So they shunned it and did not listen to its call

59. And they fought the self and devil, and avoided
The humiliation of life, however plentiful its irrigation

60. Those were the worries of men who faced its harm
Not infatuated by its worldly bloom

61. Their most fragrant merchandise was their contentment
With adequacy, leaving it to its people

62. Such merchandise, not wealth, they gathered
And soon, to the inheritors, handed it over

63. It makes you miserable with its gains while adversaries enjoy it
Purely, delighting a soul that does not renounce it

64. You buried treasure only to extract it for them
And your burial became a comfort for enemies

65. And you became in the grave, pawn to its sins
Missing, in the end, overtaking it

66. Prepare your answer during judgment, when asked
How you came to it or followed its course

67. Why do you seek from fleeting rubble whose origin is fatigue
And end is endless regret none can limit?

68. How much wealth do you hoard, not giving its rights?
Those hoards fill up with suffering

69. What do you want from embers you lived fanning?
Its flames burn more with greed kindling it

70. Why not save yourself from its blame?
The self is content, this life suffices it

71. Bread, shelter, gratitude - it is a great kingdom
Equal to Kisra's, nothing rivals it

72. That is security, not furrowing brows over what you
Hoarded, seeking no purity in it

73. Be gentle with yourself, you cannot withstand hell
And flee to God from a sin that will shame it

74. Have mercy on your bones, that they not get flayed
By boiling and the gnat's bite, if you ponder it

75. Does the wrong you did not appall you?
Sins are debts you will pay in full

76. Hasten to repentance that erases sins by it
Nothing erases them but sincere penance

77. Hasten to repent, whenever the ugliness of sin
Is recalled, the fire of fear chars it

78. And ascertain patience, determine to be steadfast
In your war with the self, singing and bending it

79. And ride the steeds of nights in worship, do not sleep in
The heedlessness of the deluded who waste it

80. You have long burdened it with deficiencies
Busy with your life, heedless of the sequel

81. Your life passes without you benefitting it at all
Or harming it, and no companion follows it

82. No passions persist after the horrors
Nor guides come to it and shelter it

83. Your nights pass fruitlessly while horrors and fears
Sink it, with no beauty or sincerity clothing it

84. The glory of your Lord you do not fear
His might and seizure of justice, you will face it

85. You clung to disobedience despite His mercy
Ungratefully repaying God's blessings by it

86. His gifts nourish you, o sluggard being lulled
Without your effort, by His favor He directs it

87. Yet you grow bold in disobeying Him
Through a blessing from Him none can tally

88. So pour out tears, for sins have shut you in
O sorrow, only repentance can clear it

89. With the courtyard filled with the sins you committed
Leave it flowing with fear, solitary

90. Perhaps you may wash what stains you applied
To a record long blackened in its margins

91. Eulogize your life, for the barren woman at the doorstep
Is blessed, though degraded in its levels

92. Death hovers over you, and will take place
Where is safety while the soul's head is in its mouth?

93. Do not dismiss death but watch for its signs
Death's gifts are with righteousness, fulfill it

94. Take your life's free time back from the hands of its wastefulness
Hopes and procrastination ruin it

95. Death is not prevented by any decree
It has steeds racing toward all ends

96. It has taken parents and offspring
While you avoid its actions toward them

97. How many it buried! How many more you hope it buries!
While you yourself entice it with hopes

98. No - it will attack when your time ends
Nothing can redeem you - neither pleading nor weeping

99. Think, when a death rattle sounds in your chest
Can you face it with your wealth?

100. As the soul flows out the body's vessels
And the eyes stare while distress blinds it

101. Cast down, with Azrael pulling out the soul
The agony of its tearing out constricts it

102. That struggle cannot be prevented by might
Nor can the facing it be avoided

103. It is inevitable, no argument can uncover it
The only matter is to meet it with goodness

104. God has shown guidance on piety
He did not hide its guidance or prohibitions from you

105. So stick to the path of piety and you will win forever
Do not cast yourself plunging into its abysses

106. Do not take the world lightly for its blossoms
So among people be the most lost in its ends

107. For it has been made clear who wins by leaving it
As it is clear who loses by falling for its crazed calls

108. And turn to God seeking a good ending
Where you will meet God and attainment He grants

109. For it is by endings all matters are judged
Perhaps the Generous Lord will favor it with His grace
