1. I have tasted the vicissitudes of fate for sixty years,
And experienced my state in hardship and ease.
١. بَلَوتُ صُروفَ الدَهرِ سِتينَ حُجَّةً
وَجَرَّبتُ حالَيهِ مِنَ العُسرِ وَاليُسرِ
2. Yet I have not found, after faith, a better thing than riches,
Nor, after infidelity, a worse thing than poverty.
٢. فَلَم أَرَ بَعدَ الدينِ خَيراً مِنَ الغِنى
وَلَم أَرَ بَعدَ الكُفرِ شَرّاً مِنَ الفَقرِ
