1. Men blame the passing days of yore,
Yet days of yore have no defect or flaw.
١. يعيبُ رِجالٌ زَماناً مَضى
وَما لِزَمانٍ مَضى مِن غِيَر
2. I see night darkening as before;
The sun and moon still keep our ancient law.
٢. أَرى اللَيلَ يَجري كَعَهدي بِهِ
وَأَنَّ النَهارَ عَلَينا يَكِر
3. The clouds withhold not from us rain they bore;
The stars still glitter as they used to draw.
٣. وَلَم تَحبِسِ القَطرَ عَنّا السَما
وَلَم تَنكَشف شَمسُنا وَالقَمَر
4. Then say to him who blames time gone before:
You wrong the time; go, blame the faults you saw!
٤. فَقُل لِلَّذي ذَمَّ صَرفَ الزَمانِ
ظَلَمتَ الزَمانَ فَذُمَّ البَشَر
