1. The fleeting world has failed all who dreamed,
Though with illusion long she fascinated fools.

2. She came to me in wedding garments dressed,
Adorned as brides of old in rich apparel.

3. I said, “Turn from me, I have no desire for you,
I am not ignorant, though disdainful.

4. I want no part of you or worldly stuff,
While my beloved lies imprisoned in a cell.”

5. She offered me treasures and finery,
And Qarun’s wealth, and powers of tribes and kings.

6. But all things pass, as we too shall pass,
And from her storehouses all debts are called.

7. “Turn from me, I have no wish for rank or rule,
Or all the power and glory you can give.”

8. My soul is satisfied with what I have been given,
So go your way, O world, and tempt others.

9. I fear God on the day we meet Him,
And dread unending torment, anguish never-ending.
