1. The strokes of fortune last not forever,
Neither sorrow nor joy endures for long.
١. فَما نُوَبُ الحَوادِثِ باقياتٌ
وَلا البُؤسى تَدومُ وَلا النَعيمُ
2. As happiness fades swiftly when it comes,
So too your troubles will not last.
٢. كَما يَمضي سُرورٌ وَهوَ جَمُّ
كَذَلِكَ ما يَسوؤُكَ لا يَدومُ
3. Do not destroy yourself with grief for what is gone,
Nor let sorrows isolate you with their gloom.
٣. فَلا تَهلِك عَلى ما فاتَ وَجدَاً
وَلا تَفرِدكَ بِالأَسَفِ الهُمومُ
