1. I stood when the path of desire narrowed for me,
And nothing remained of my course but the bitterness of the end.

2. I stood alone, lost, weak,
A friend of sorrow.

3. I wanted to pray at length,
For whom? I almost forgot for whom.

4. For whom can one who grew accustomed
To other than prayer now pray?

5. One whose heart was busy,
And who strayed from God?

6. O You whose benevolence disappeared
Behind the limits of humanity,

7. I forgot You in days of ease,
So do not forget me in times of distress.

8. O Most Forgiving, Most Merciful,
Who sees my evening and morning,

9. May You not avenge,
For Your forbearance fills eternity.

10. Your pastures are the green of desires,
They are what I long for, my Master!

11. While my body is worn out by troubles -
Take me by the hand in Your tenderness!
