1. Though she turned away from my love and affection,
And greeted me coldly with frowns and disdain,
١. إِنَّ جُملاً وَإِن تَبَيَّنتُ مِنها
نَكباً عَن مَوَدَّتي وَاِزوِرارا
2. Thoughts of her kept me awake through the night,
And drove all comfort and solace from me.
٢. شرّدَت بِاِدِّكارِها النَّوم عَنّي
وَأُطيرَ العَزاءُ منّي فطارا
3. No fault have her people, that she shunned
All greeting, and met me with cold disdain.
٣. ما عَلى أَهلِها وَلَم تَأتِ سوءاً
أَن تُحَيّا تَحِيَّةً أَو تُزارا
4. But the day that she frowned and turned from me,
Wilful pride and disdain were her bane.
٤. يَوم أَبدَوا لي التَّجَهُّمَ فيها
وَحَمَوها لَجاجَةً وَصِرارا
