I surrender with the longing of the afflicted,

أسلم تسليم المشوق المتيم

1. I surrender with the longing of the afflicted,
And I mix my flowing tears with blood.

١. أَسَلِّمُ تَسليمَ المَشوقِ المُتَيَّمِ
وَأَمزِجُ مَسفوحَ المَدامعِ بالدَّمِ

2. And I will cry for you until the clouds know
That they owe you - how many discharged clouds!

٢. وَأَبكيكَ حَتّى تَعلَمَ السحبُ أَنَّها
وَحَقِّكَ كَم غادَرنَ مِن مترَدّم

3. And I lead to pasture from the virgin thoughts of my mind,
Gentler than the breeze, without a blemish.

٣. وَأعقِرُ مِن أَبكارِ فِكري عَقائِلاً
أَرّقّ مِنَ التَسنيمِ لا ذاتَ مَنسِمِ

4. After Abu Kafi, is there any to restrain tears?
And after him, a mouth smiles?

٤. أَبَعدَ أَبو كافٍ تَكُفّ مَدامِعٌ
وَيَحظى فَمٌ مِن بَعدِهِ بِالتَبَسّمِ

5. I confide in you, not because you are my helper,
But the confiding of a burning lover.

٥. أُناجيكَ لا أَنّي إِخالُكَ مُنجدي
وَلَكِن مُناجاةَ الحَبيبِ المُحَوِّمِ

6. You left greatness after your remoteness - they are
My days that sometimes adorn the face, and sometimes break it.

٦. تَرَكتَ المَعالي بَعدَ بُعدشكَ إِنَّها
أَيامى تَصُكّ الوَجهَ حيناً وَتَلطِمُ

7. And who is for the unattainable endeavors
With ease when they weary you other than you who submits?

٧. وَمَن لِلمَساعي إِن تَعَذَّرَ كَسبُها
بِيُسرِ إِذا أَعيَت سِواكَ يُسَلِّمِ

8. And who can solve the greatest concerns
With a mind like an Indian sword that pierces?

٨. وَمَن لِلمُهِماتِ العِظامِ يُحُلّها
بِفِكرٍ كَحَدِّ الهِندوانيِّ لَهذَمِ

9. And who comes to you seeking refuge
From the calamity of time? You say: At your service, at your service, so find peace!

٩. وَمَن لِمَهيضِ الدَهرِ يَأَتيكَ لائِذاً
تَقولُ لَهُ لَبَّيكَ لَبَّيكَ فاِسلَمِ

10. And who is the adornment of the assembly of which you are its adornment
When you are absent or the crescent moon of the gold-embroidered Thursday?

١٠. وَمَن زينَةُ الحَفلِ الَّذي أَنتَ زَينُهُ
إِذا غِبتَ أَو صَدرُ الخَميسِ العَرمَرَمِ

11. So I was anguished - how ardent I was and how prolonged was my agony!
And I lost the most virtuous I knew and the most generous.

١١. فُجِعتُ فَيا لَهفي وَطولَ تَوَجّعي
وَفارَقتُ أَزكى مَن عَرَفتُ وَأَكرَمِ

12. You went ahead of us and willingly surrendered yourself to God,
And you went away when you were determined to take the best course.

١٢. تَقَدَّمتَنا وَاِنقَدتَ لِلَّهِ طائِعاً
وَسِرتَ وَقَد يَمَّمتَ خَيرَ مُيَمَّمِ

13. And you left us in deep sorrow and regret
For you, while the one you left has no defects.

١٣. وَفارَقتَنا أَنضاءَ حُزنٍ وَحَسرَة
عَلَيكَ وَمَن فارَقتَ غَيرُ مُذَمَّمِ

14. So the days darkened and their face was dust-colored.
And they and the one you left had no defects.

١٤. فَأَظلَمَتِ الأَيّامُ وَاِغبَر وَجهُها
وَكانَت وَمَن فارَقتَ غَيرُ مُذَمَّمِ

15. Nights that were once adorned with joy like pearls -
Through them time adorned the land without distortion.

١٥. لَياليَ كانَت بالسُرور لآلِئاً
بِها الدَهرُ سَحّ البِرِّ غَيرَ مُجَمجَم

16. You would tread on the Pleiades with shoes as an ascension,
And you would spend the evening at the Star of Sirius gathering its fruits.

١٦. تَدوسُ الثَريّا بِالنِعال تَرَفعاً
وَتُمسي عَلى زَهرِ المَجَرَّةِ تَرقُمُ

17. And you would pluck every ripe flower from the Star Cluster,
And in all hopes you would rule, so rule!

١٧. وَتَقطِفُ مِن زَهرِ المُنى كُلّ يانِعٍ
وَفي سائِرِ الآمالِ حُكِّمتَ فاِحكُمِ

18. It made us drink a cup of pure wine,
And after it we drank a cup of bitterness.

١٨. أَدارَ عَلَينا كَأسَ أَمنٍ رَويَّةً
وَجَرعَنا مِن بعدِها كَأسَ عَلقَم

19. You were happy while many tearful-eyed ones cried for you,
And many dark-eyed ones cried for you.

١٩. فَرُحتَ وَكَم باكٍ بِأَجفانِ شادِنٍ
عَلَيكَ وَكَم باكٍ بِأَجفانِ ضَيغَم

20. Damned is time if it ever scanted you an hour,
Envying with a twisted bow and arrows.

٢٠. فَسُحقاً لِدَهرٍ إِن أَعارَكَ ساعَةً
أَغارَ بِكَفٍّ ذاتِ قَوسٍ وَأَسهُم

21.
How many resolves did it tear like the shinbones of an ostrich,

٢١. فَكَم مَزَّقَت لَزمى كَندَمَي جُذَيمَةٍ
وَكَم فَرَّقَت مِن مالِكٍ وَمُتَمِّم

22. And how many kingdoms did it separate and perfect?
And how much poetry it scattered and silenced -

٢٢. وَكَم نَثَرَت نَظماً وَأَصمَت وَأَصمَتَت
وَذا دأبُها مِن عَهدِ عادٍ وَجُرهُمِ

23. Such has been its habit since the time of ‘Aad and Jurhum!
May God forgive what has passed for its course,

٢٣. عَفا اللَهُ عَمّا قَد مَضى لِسَبيلِهِ
وَلا قاكَ بِالبُشرى وَحُسنِ التَكَرّمِ

24. And not replace you with good tidings and excellent favors.
We hope that He shows you pardon and mercy,

٢٤. وَنَرجوهُ أَن يوليكَ عَفواً وَرَحمَةً
وَيَسمَعَ مِنّا فيكَ طولَ التَرَحُّمِ

25. And we hear from Him your long lament.
Peace of God upon you, the farewell of a regretful one

٢٥. عَلَيكَ سَلامُ اللَه تَسليمَ آسِفٍ
عَلى ما مَضى مِن عَهدِكَ المُتَقَدمِ
