1. By Allah, my yearning for Tunis was not stirred,
Nor were my tearful laments for her sake.

2. Her longing was not kindled, nor did it blaze,
Nor did it increase at every moment.

3. My heart has often lamented the painful
Separation, so my ordeal would be renewed.

4. It is not Tunis that holds back my resolve or those in her,
But the Well of Stones has sealed my fate.

5. May Allah water that good land with bounty,
And greet the soul’s life with a gracious greeting.

6. May He single out the abode of love as Muhammad’s house,
And shower it with blessings and mercy.

7. For by Allah that gazelle grazes around it,
And none graze but my vigor and strength.

8. O Gentle Taker of Souls, have mercy
On the lowly, with kindness.

9. My soul has often wasted away in love of You,
Can Your vexation spare it by gentleness?

10. May your fellowship reunite the severed joy,
And your resolve bring together the parted union.

11. I send greetings of pure fragrance,
As the mention of you is sweetly fragrant to me.

12. Our words have not renewed the latent longing—
By Allah, my yearning for Tunis was not stirred.
