1. It is ardent love that has overwhelmed me
And I've been distanced from the one whom I adore
١. رُوَيْداً هو الوجْدُ الذي جَلَّ فادحُه
وقد بعُدتْ ممَّن أُحِبُّ مطاوحُهْ
2. My thoughts wandered lost in the essence of my being
And the text of passion - none can explain
٢. هوىً تاهَتِ الأفْكارُ في كُنْهِ ذاتِه
ومَتْنُ غَرامٍ عنه يعجَزُ شارِحُهْ
3. I call to you, will you near me, be my aid
My brother of woe, his burdens manifest
٣. أقيكَ الرَّدَى هل أنت بالقُرْبِ مُنْجِدٌ
أخا دَنَفٍ لاحَتْ عليه لَوائحُهْ
4. A loved one, his enemies lament his loss
While his own weep for the hardships he's met
٤. مُعنَّى رثَتْ أعداؤُه لنُحُولِهِ
ورَقَّ له ممَّا يُقاسِيه كاشِحُهْ
5. He's no confidante to solace his sorrow
Or soothe the agony of his longing, none
٥. وليس له خِدْنٌ يُعيِنُ على الأسَى
يُطارِحُه شَجْوَ الهوَى ويُطارِحُهْ
6. He tries to hide his love though his eyes betray
All that his soul has hidden, make it known
٦. يحاول كِتْمانَ الهوَى وجُفونُهُ الْـ
ـقريحةُ تُبْدِي ما أكَنَّتْ جَوانِحُهْ
7. Misfortunes befell him, if but one or two
Would an infant endure, they'd shred his innocence
٧. خُطوبٌ أصابَتْه لَوَ آنَّ ببعضها
جَنِيناً دَرَى في المهْدِ شابَتْ مَسائِحُهْ
8. Fate cast him out willfully in his isolation
And in avoidance, his wanderings were condensed
٨. رمَتْهُ يدُ الأيَّام عمْداً بنَأيِهِمْ
وضاقَتْ عليه بالتَّجَنِّي فَسائحُهْ
9. My two friends, spur on the caravan without me
And speak no lies that its course was bent
٩. خلِيلَيَّ حُثَا أيْنُقَ الرَّكْبِ بي ولا
تَقولاَ من الإدْلاَجِ كَلَّتْ طَلاَئِحُهْ
10. Misguided from the caravan whose bearing
Its own winds make clear, freely sent
١٠. وعُوجا على الرَّكْبِ الذي قد جَهِلْتُمَا
معَالِمَهُ تَهْدِيكُمَاهُ رَواىِحُهْ
11. A place it leads to, each eager heart
Its beauty arrests all gazes, evokes awe
١١. مَحلٌّ إليه كلُّ قلبٍ مُشَوَّقٌ
وتسْتَوْقِفُ الأحْداقَ حُسْناً أباطِحُهْ
12. Who passes thinks it a hallowed shrine
When songbirds trill over the boughs caw-caw
١٢. يظن به مَن جَازَه حَلَّ مَعْبَداً
إذا صَدَحَتْ فوقَ الغُصونِ صَوادِحُهْ
13. The clouds watered and greeted it with downpours
At dawn its groves drizzled, caressed with dew
١٣. سَقاهُ وحَيَّاهُ الغَمامُ بَوابِلٍ
تُبَاكِرُه أوْداقُهُ وتُراوِحُهْ
14. You'd think, if the moon shone in the gloom
And dawned in its darkness, it would stand true
١٤. بِهِ تَرَيَا مَن لو بدا البدرُ في الدُّجَى
وأسْفَر في دَيْجُوره فهْوَ فَاضِحُهْ
15. Beautiful, it shames the sun with its light
And by it, all beings are humbled, made meek
١٥. جميلاً يُعيرُ الشمسَ من نُورِ وجْهِهِ
وتُسْبَى به مِن كلِّ حَيٍّ مَلائِحُهْ
16. A brow, feared by lions in its regal mien
Dreaded by armored knights, soldiers weak
١٦. جبيناً تَهابُ الأُسْدُ سَوْرةَ وجْهِه
ويخْشاهُ مَن في الدِّرْعِ تُخْشَى صَفائِحُهْ
17. It defends my loved one by day and perhaps
By night, its specter visits, makes peace
١٧. يصُدُّ مُعَنَّاهُ نهاراً وربَّما
يُوافيه ليلاً طَيْفُهُ فيُصالُحِهْ
18. For it, eyes of a gazelle, none else can boast
All its limbs enraptured by its niece
١٨. له مُقْلَتَا رِيمٍ وما شاَمَ غيرَهُ
جَوارحها إلا وذابتْ جوارحُهْ
19. If it promises abandonment, it fulfills its threat
If it promises the longing one, it only jokes
١٩. إذا أوْعدَ الهِجْرانَ وَفَّى وَعِيدَهُ
وإن وعَد المُشْتاقَ فَهُوَ يُمَازِحُهْ
20. And if it blames me in ignorance of my devotion
With tears streaming down my cheek it soaks
٢٠. وإن لامَنِي فيهِ عَذُولِي جَهالةً
وقدْ طَلَّ من دَمْعِي على الخَدِّ سافحُهْ
21. So for it, I'm busy composing refined praise
Its excellent verses my poems adorn
٢١. فلِي عنه شُغلٌ بامْتِداحِي مُهذَّباً
تُزيِّنُ أبْكارَ المعاني مَدَائِحُهْ
