1. Take care of your concerns and observe
In the darkness, the glad tidings of the coming dawn

2. Fulfill the promise of the horizons and behold them,
Examine the flowers of the stars and ask them,

3. Perhaps the purposes of the darkness come to an end,
And the sorrows of grief fade away.

4. Do not in the world fool a heart with your tears
That finds it too hard for you to be humble,

5. And do not give the hands of youth power over your reins,
Lest they should turn away your determined purpose after

6. I included the setting stars in my grasp.
So good sense will have its way if you have no success,

7. And striving will have its effect if you have no effect;
And I will reign over the night with none to assist me,

8. And ride over danger with none to restrain me;
And I will prevail over Time by my strong purpose,

9. And roll over disasters by my firmness;
And I will discharge at those warring against me

10. Who blamed me for holding back in the fray.
Therefore when you see a star disclose in its rising

11. A remnant gleam of the fire of the kindler;
And planets retard and wander distracted

12. In the unknown breadth of space;
And when the Lesser Bear wheels between scattered stars

13. As a flock of wild cats routed by a snarler;
And Virgo's stars swoop down their wings

14. As the ring-doves having returned to watering-place;
And as though the Pleiades were a lamp new-lit

15. To guide over tracks of stars gone astray;
And as though the Pole that declines from the turning skies

16. Were a troop halting by a known dwelling;
And the Cradle of stars was as though it had gathered

17. Blossoms above the channel of a rivulet;
And you saw the Wing of Night had furled its corners

18. With thick opaqueness from every horizon;
Then be sure prosperity comes with ascendant stars

19. To favor sincere hopes and good auspices.
So rejoice at them! They are our desires accomplished;

20. They are the Dawn arisen! therefore look for its gleaming.
Imbibe deeply the visitings of absence; combine

21. The gallop of the steed and the night-long journey.
Settle yourself in the wilderness of the sand wastes

22. And accustom your soul to the sorrow of parting and travel.
For I would guard you with the noblest patronage

23. And build for you the strongest fortress
With resolves that do not weaken and with insight

24. That does not end, and with means that are inexhaustible,
Until I had seen Virgo where it sank low down

25. Cleaving a way in the river of the early dawn;
And Day raising the lid of a crimson eye,

26. And Night closing the lid of a black eye--
So that it seemed there were two horsemen in the sky,

27. One disappearing in the track of one appearing.
Thanks are my duty paid to the Victorious King

28. For benefits of which the traveller is undisabled;
A fresh sweet smell that the bags give out,

29. And day shining on the wing of the pitching tents,
Bearing the meadows' praise to the rain-clouds,

30. And the wilds' i sight of the thundering storm-rack;
With pure generous deeds unsoiled,

31. Religious observances from which none escapes,
And safeguards that are unbetrayed.

32. By them the virgin Science was suckled and reared
On the juice of the budding spring's fresh Mn blossoms;

33. And a surety adequate to every praise
Guides it to a King whose extreme desires it fulfils;

34. So that you may pay thanks that were overdue,
And fulfil long-owed vows at their proper time;

35. And unload the burden of the sinner who implores,
In the shadow of the forgiving Lord's clemency;

36. And set down the load of the corner who returns often,
In the shadow of the Protector's reproach.

37. So to Him I will surrender the purpose of the rival
And the hopes of the despairer and the hand of the expectant

38. A King who came forth from the choicest stock
Of lofty and fecund Yarbu', liberal and pure;

39. In whose noble nature were implanted the glories
Of excelling in place and being magnified

40. Above every peerless and honored one, revered
Among the sovereigns and mighty potentates;

41. A cloudburst of generosity in days of dearth,
And a lighted lamp in blackest darkness;

42. His crown of kingship capers over his brow
Because of the place he has taken, too high for me!

43. So that his face seems to be the sun of morning
Added to a full moon garlanded with stars.

44. Those returning from every wondrous deed of grace,
And those untying every intricate difficulty;

45. They inherited the reins of power generation on generation,
And they won them age after age forever;

46. And they attained the House of Revelation and Guidance
By achievement and the King's special favor;

47. So Ar-Rahman chose for the resting-place of the Prophet
A worthy Chamber and Tomb for the Sent One.

48. And they monopolized favors and gained as their lot
Abundance of praise in the Preserved Book;

49. It was they who begot you and entrusted you with their swords
To strive in God's way, and to prove you;

50. So you smote the hordes of error with resolve
Hurrying doom upon them with the rushing squadrons;

51. And you laid waste their land, and the fortress avails not
For the escaped, and there is no escape from your fortress,

52. With steadfastness and stratagems that have wearied
The hero's prowess and the skill of the wily.

53. So you left the idolaters stretched among the slain,
Slaughtered and dust-grimed and wounded and lame;

54. While you advanced the host of the Faithful, endowed
With victory's honors and spoils for the victors.

55. Make glad then in a long life, for one returned brings you good news
Of delight and enduring being and goals attained.

56. And of a prospect of royalty whose peer
The keenest mind falls short of and the beholder despairs—

57. The eyes of all creatures look to you, so wear
In haste Light's diadem with the sooner-dawning day!

58. Towards you from the mosque the people took their way,
Then turned, thronging in haste between proclaimer and praiser,

59. Pressing around a hand now stretched out
To every expectant and every embracer;

60. While kings in homage bowed themselves before you
Setting faces on the ground instead of feet;

61. And they saw your crescent banner above your throne
Realizing hopes and true guidance shadowed forth.
