1. She defied the impending separation out of aloofness,
And donned the mask of patience over sighs of passion.

2. And surrendered the pride of sorrow to the judgment of grief,
Thus what she conceals in sleep betrays what she reveals awake.

3. And the doubt of anger uncovered the truth of consent,
And the crescent of union rose from the sunset of estrangement.

4. So they almost bound the rods with twisting,
And brought the swords closer from the path of the knots.

5. And the anguish of longing overflowed in the bonds of affliction,
And the cheeks' tenderness flowed in the burgeoning roses.

6. So I sipped the bitterness of fervor from the cold of life,
And took from the melting honey the bitter aloe juice.

7. And she said farewell while parting had arrived
With a chest next to a chest and a cheek next to a cheek.

8. Maybe the nearness of the souls brought us together
For the fruits of proximity from the tree of separation.

9. So ahead of those who race, with a journey
Whose star of knowledge rises in the horizon of fortune,

10. To al-Himyari al-ʿAmri, who by his guidance
The sanctity of purpose became enlightened and the glory of resolve.

11. To a king whose wishes and desires abound,
As abundant as the swords, armor, and lances.

12. And abundance of war horses in the horror of battle,
And abundance of the gown of wisdom in the assembly of praise.

13. Trusted by God, loyal to Him,
For what was lost of a right and what promise was broken.

14. He appeared to us at the rise of the kingdom, so the
Darkness of misguidance in the paths of righteousness vanished.

15. He hung the sword of victory on the shoulder of supremacy,
And planted the crown of kingship on the headland of glory.

16. And he shone in an atmosphere of honor and highness,
And poured from a shade upon the outstretched earth.

17. And he met the faces of the hopefuls as if
Their wishes awakened in the morning fulfilled.

18. And he called on the eras: take comfort and shorten,
And roused hopes: expand and extend,

19. To the spirit of benefaction that inclines toward desires,
And the flood of kindness that flows to friendship.

20. Your legacy from a grandfather and ancestors with their guidance
Brought you to the happiest of ancestors.

21. So suffice yourself with a soul, fulfill yourself with a father,
Take your law from an uncle, and take your example from a grandfather.

22. With them the sea of religion surged in every land,
And they left the sea of enemies without tide.

23. They inhabited the days with the settler of guidance,
And emptied the thickets of polytheism from the settler of lions.

24. They unsheathed the swords of Muhammad’s religion,
And left the swords of the breakers of pledges without an edge.

25. They vanquished Chosroes and Caesar,
And crowned you the crown of kingship uniquely without rival.

26. The pillars of authority and the pillars of might
With which Quraysh's kinship with Tamim was reinforced.

27. And they preserved its banners and system
With none like you, my Master, and none like me, your servant.

28. With what you tied in it of glory and excellence,
And what shone upon it of my praises and panegyrics.

29. The world has not adorned itself with the bride of leadership,
With their kingdom except my ode was her necklace.

30. And the horizons have not roared from the good mention of them,
With an army of praise except my poem was in its midst.

31. With what they extended to me hands that empowered my hands,
The necks of the outstretched swords and armored.

32. And what they paved for me of the bed of honor,
And what banners and soldiers followed me.

33. And how much they crowned me with bounty that I donned
Over the times past in the garb of immortality.

34. If you implemented it from them in me partially,
Then how much I took it from them in full without limit.

35. And if you made me abstain from transgressing the prohibitions,
Then since the cradle your father has lovingly made me abstain.

36. And if the people of the earth enjoyed your universal generosity,
Then I alone have singled myself out in gratitude to you.

37. The unprecedented surfaced amongst you O Banu Yaʿrub,
The first of those before me and the last of those after me.

38. And the newness of my era to you does not make it forget its pledges,
To you by my right from your loyalty to the covenant.

39. Nor does the distance of my abode from you wear out the means,
By which my proximity and my remoteness from you are evident.

40. Your swords never missed a transgressing sword,
Nor did your hands fail any transgressor’s expectation.

41. Nor did the days cease to shine from you,
As benevolence shone from your presence in my presence.
