1. O essence of the most precious eyes whose tears
And whose sighs fill up the ribs to treasure

2. Come to the mother of calamities and bring joy
To souls whom time straitens with sorrow

3. For a misfortune that struck the house of Khattab
And caused the world to mourn its noble captives

4. O tears of days for the moon that gave them
Shelter from tears with its light

5. O flood of death that drowned a youth who saved
The free from its overwhelming tides

6. O palm tree of glory that led destinies
To the tall branches of its trees

7. If I missed the shade of its doves
It left me the fruit of its yield

8. If the water of Dijlah deceived my eyes
It flooded my land after Euphrates’ waves
