1. O you who ask about my weeping when I saw
Tears from my eyes racing the rain

2. When it was said the minister fell
My tears flowed faster downhill

3. And I said: O soul, will you be patient, can
One live after parting with patience?

4. I consulted with passion that melts it
And reason is the reason of right that attended

5. I desire my descent though prudence hates it
And leaving prudence rides on harm

6. Because I'm sane and I like
Staying home and hate traveling

7. Sitting half the day pleases me
And water with ice, cool belly

8. And drinking from my goblet I say of it
As I see the water and moon in it

9. And I don't lead the freed horses, but
I drive cows through the alleys

10. Any cow with udders for her bull
A head with two horns splitting rocks

11. Fat filled its gut so it became
Like a ten-month pregnant she-camel's belly

12. When she came to me at night walking
Her clothes girded with rough cloth

13. She gallops like a startled horse
And who can stop a horse when it startles?

14. I stretched my arm into her blouse feeling
And combed her hair with my right hand

15. I'm better in war than your ranks
Tomorrow sitting braiding the hair

16. And plucking hair from the brow of a free woman
I'm gentle in plucking it and she feels nothing

17. Or a ram raising its head looking at me
From a hole in the door whenever I bellow

18. Alas! That I attend war
And that your eyes see any trace of me in it

19. Rather, what pleases me still is
Creeping frightened and wary at night

20. I'm heading to where she's sleeping
And this one to where they got drunk

21. And the noise of good sex whenever
One under and one over snorts

22. And the talk of some experts when they
Smelled our farts in the morning by their noses

23. There's freshness in this ram's fart and I see
The dung of that cow after it fermented

24. The tambourine on morn pitter-pattering
And my flute wailing whenever it moaned

25. And my poems whenever I recited them
Were a massacre whose chins I fattened with verse

26. This is my creed and so forever
I see for myself, so how do you see?
