1. Wondrous is he who lamented the lamenters,
How eloquent were his lips in death!

2. A king, if one day he rules the world,
The world becomes lowly to tyranny.

3. Would that a palmful had cast dust upon him
Whose right hand holds no boughs.

4. When countries bowed to him, spear atop,
And the two burdens feared him.

5. Where is the Lord of Zuraa’, who wore
The mantle of a king for twenty-two years?

6. Man is but like a match; when
The fiery challenges seize him.

7. No restraint can bend his passion, nor can
The expert douse his wick.

8. The reins of kingship saddled him until
He led his foes unfettered.

9. Eyes lower before him, and hands
Tremble in fear of him.

10. He gathered the ends of his kingdom, then was laid
Behind, lower than the lowly.

11. Hashimite unfurling, bearing not the burden
Of the wandering, wavering fool.

12. Patient, making the fearful forget fear,
And resolute, bending all wills.

13. Souls fled him in dread,
Though spirits remain in bodies.
