2. She came to Damascus as an unripe date
With, around her neck, a collar of gratitude and praise

ูู ุงูุดููุฑ ููุงูุญูู

3. And she was married off to one not her equal among people
So she went astray in those dwellings, lost from the right path

ูู ูููุณู ูู ุงููุงุณ ูููุคููุง
ููุถูุช ููุฏู ุชูููู ุงูู
ููุงุฒู ุนูู ุฑูุดุฏ
4. She saw every house whose door was locked by stinginess
And blocked with plaster and hard stone
ูค. ุฑูุฃูุช ููู ุฏุงุฑู ุบูููู ุงูุดุญ ุจุงุจููุง
ููุณูุฏูุฏูุง ุจูุงูุฌุต ููุงูุญูุฌูุฑ ุงูุตููุฏ
5. And the brutal night overtook her, so she wandered in confusion
No doubt a young woman fears the soldiers

ูููุง ุดููู ุฅูู ุงูุจูุฑ ุชูุฎุดู ู
ูู ุงูุฌููุฏ
6. Loneliness in a strange land terrified her
So she stood on her feet, shaking like a little bird

ูุช ุนููู ุงูุฃููุฏุงู
ุชูุฑุฌู ููุงูุณูุนุฏู
7. With her robe torn, her bodice undone
Her pants lost, her breasts exposed

ูุฒููุฉ ุงูุฌููุจุงุจ ู
ูุญูููุฉ ุงูุนูุฑู
ู
ูุถูุนุฉ ุงูุณุฑูุงู ุจุงุฏูุฉ ุงูููุฏ
8. She says, โGod has lost an old man and lost me
And guides whoever He wants, though He knows not who He guides.โ

9. She said, โCan I see any sign of jealousy now
To protect my honor?โ So I said to her, โI am here.โ
ูฉ. ูููุงููุช ุชูุฑู ููู ุฃูุจุตูุฑ ุงูุขู ุบูุฑุฉ
ุฃูุตูู ุจููุง ุนูุฑุถู ูููููุช ูููุง ุนููุฏู
10. She said, โPerhaps this is the house of Ibn Munjik
The ruler of Damascus in Syria?โ I said, โYes, indeed.โ

11. So I greeted her courteously
And lavished my soul upon her and offered her my cheek

ููุฑุชูุง ุฑูุญู ููุงูุฑูุดุชููุง ุฎูุฏู
12. And enjoyed myself with her, making her think
That I could regain my youth when alone with her

ุช ุฃูููููุง
ุชุฑุฏ ุดูุจุงุจู ุฅูุฐ ุฎููููุช ุจููุง ููุญุฏู
13. So I said, โTo whom have you come?โ She said, frightened,
โTo that monkey in the company of monkeys.โ

ูู ูุงููุช ูุงููุช ู
ูุฑูุนุฉ
ุฅููู ุฐููููู ุงูุฌุฑุฏุงู ูู ุตูุญุจุฉ ุงููุฑุฏ
14. And she sang a verse the likes of which Iโd never heard
That pierced through the heat of time like ice.

ุง ุณูู
ุนุช ุจูู
ูุซูููู
ููุณุงููู ูู ูููุธ ุงูุฒูู
ุงู ุญููู ุงูุจูุฑุฏ
15. โDear brother, your resolve, if even partly gained
From unstable money, would fell the lionโs charge
ูกูฅ. ุฃูุฎุง ุนูุฒู
ุงุช ููู ูููุงู ุจูุจูุนุถููุง
ู
ูู ุงููููุฏ ุงููุงูู ููููุช ุตูููุฉ ุงูุฃูุณูุฏ
16. And that one who does not pay for a single hair
Even if the tresses sprouted on his noble steed.โ
ูกูฆ. ููุฐุงูู ุงูููุฐู ู
ุง ูููุณู ููุดุฑู ุจุดุนุฑุฉ
ููููู ููุจูุชุช ู
ูููู ุงูุณุจุงู ุนููู ูููุฏ
17. I thought to not prolong her stay with me
And she feared the threat of expulsion and banishment
ูกูง. ููุธูุช ุจุงูู ูุง ุฃูุทูู ู
ููุงู
ููุง
ููุฏูููู ููุฎุงููุช ููุณู
ุฉ ุงูุทูุฑุฏ ููุงูุจูุนุฏ
18. So I said, โLive comfortably and rest your eyes
For it is righteous to host widows seeking charity.โ

19. โStay as long as you wish to leave us
And go wherever you want, without expulsion.โ

ู ุฅููู ุฃูู ุชูุดุชููู ุงูุณููุฑ ุนููุฏููุง

ูู ุชูุจุบู ููุฎููู ุจููุง ุทูุฑุฏ
20. She said, โIโm not accustomed to seclusion
Nor was I raised in the lap of chastity from my cradle.โ

ูููุง ุฃููุง ูู ุญูุฌุฑ ุงูุตููุงูุฉ ู

21. She left suddenly like a flashing lightning
And cried the crying of one in anguish and ecstasy

ุญุฉ ุจุงุฑู
ููุชูุจูู ุจููุงุกู ุงูู
ูุณุชููุงู

22. I said, โFor whom do you wail?โ She howled
โAlas the donkey is dead from exhaustion!โ

ูู ุชููุฏุจูู ููููููุช
ูููุงูู ููููุฏ ู
ุงุชู ุงูุญูู
ุงุฑ ู
ูู ุงูููุฏ
23. โAnd I have bad luckโif I threw just a little
It would afflict all who come after me.โ
ูขูฃ. ููุนููุฏูู ุดูู
ููู ุทูุฑุญุช ุฃููููู
ุนููู ููู ู
ูู ุจูุนุฏู ูููุงูู ุจููู ููุนุฏู
24. I said, โTo which perversions do you belong?โ
She said, โI was the wife of the baboon without marriage contract.โ
ูขูค. ูููููุชู ุฅููู ุฃูู ุงูู
ููุงุญูุณ ุชููุชูู

ูููุงููุช ุทููุณ ูุงูู ุฒููุฌู ุจููุง ุนููุฏ
25. So I said, โGo wherever you want, despicable one,
Returning without inheritance or dowry.โ
