سقمت من بعدكم فعودوا

1. I grew sick in your absence, so return,
For no harm befalls one who is kind.

١. سَقِمتُ مِن بُعدِكُم فَعودوا
فَما عَلى مُحسنٍ جُناح

2. I loved a full moon openly,
And succeeded in loving it, thus I prospered.

٢. عَشِقتُ بَدراً بِلا سِرار
أَفلَحتُ في حُبّهِ فلاح

3. I am a martyr in love for that moon,
When it glanced at me with its eyelids' sword.

٣. بَدرٌ أَنا في الهَوى شَهيدُه
لمّا بسيف الجُفون صال

4. Its glance, aloofness, and cheek
Are past, future, and present.

٤. فَطَرفُهُ وَالجَفا وَجيدُه
ماضٍ وَمستقبلٌ وَحال

5. Had its promise of meeting been true,
My heart would not have been plagued with the impossible.

٥. لَو صدقَت باللقا وَعودُه
ما علّلَ القَلبَ بِالمُحال

6. What my critic blamed me for is right,
It's true, and so is the truth of passionate love.

٦. رأيُ الَّذي لامَني سَديدُ
حَقٌّ وَحقّ الهَوى صُراح

7. But I had no choice,
O reproacher, in loving an unchaste one.

٧. لَكِنَّني لست بِاِختياري
يا عاذلي في هَوى الملاح

8. I sacrifice myself for a gentle one who harbors slyness,
Whose heart is rough with aloofness.

٨. أَفدي لَطيفاً حَوى المَلاحَة
عَلى الجَفا قَلبُهُ جَبَل

The rose of his cheek is so shameless

٩. وَردَةُ خديه بِالوَقاحَة
مِنها اِستَحى نرجسُ المقَل

10. That the narcissus of the meadow is ashamed of it.
That youth claimed his saliva

١٠. قَد اِدَّعى الصَبُّ أَن راحَه
كَريقه العذب فاِنتَحل

11. Is like pure syrup, so he appropriated it.
His piercing glance is like steel,

١١. ومرهفٌ طرفُهُ حَديد
وَقَدُّهُ يُخجلُ الرماح

12. And his composure puts spears to shame.
When he appears seeking revenge,

١٢. إِذا بَدا طالِباً لثار
نادَيتُ يا قَومَنا السِلاح

13. I call out, “O people, arm yourselves!”
He sways, walking alone,

١٣. مُهَفهفٌ مُفردُ التثنّي
وِصالُهُ غايَةُ المُنى

14. His union being the height of desires.

١٤. قَد مَلَّ سكني جنان عدن
وَاِتّخذ القَلب مسكنا

15. He has filled the gardens of Paradise with joy,
And made my heart his dwelling.

١٥. أَقرعُ عُمري عليه سِنّي
إِن لَم أَنَل وَصلَه أَنا

16. I knock out my life span for him,
If I don't get to unite with him.

١٦. أَودُّ لَو كانَ ذا يفيدُ
أَو كانَ من خُلقِهِ السماح

17. I wish he could be of use,
Or was of a generous nature.

١٧. أَنّي أُقضّي به نَهاري
ضمّاً ولثماً وشربَ راح

18. I'd pass my day with him,
Embracing, kissing, and sipping wine.

١٨. ليسَ لَهُ حينَ ماسَ شبه
مرّ عَلى الفكرِ أَو خطر

19. He is peerless when he smiles,
Nothing passes through the mind or occurs to it.

١٩. وَلا أُطيقُ السلوّ عَنهُ
نهى الَّذي لام أَمر

20. I cannot abstain from him,
Forbidden by the one who blamed.

٢٠. أَنا كَما قيل فيّ منه
أَقنعُ بِالقُرب وَالنظر

21. I am as they said of me about him:
I am content with nearness and gazing.

٢١. إِن دام ذا إِنَّني سَعيد
يا سَعدُ قَد فزتُ بِالنجاح

22. If this state persists, indeed I am happy.
O Saad, I have succeeded and triumphed!

٢٢. عَطاءُ روحي له شعاري
إِنَّ سماحَ الهَوى رباح

23. My soul's gift to him is my path,
For passionate love's forgiveness is blessings.

٢٣. يا رُبَّ سَمرا عليه جُنَّت
لمّا أَتى دارَ وَصلِها

24. O Lord, engulf him in gardens,
When he came to her house of union,

٢٤. ثمّ اِنثنى راجِعاً فأَنَّت
لمّا مَضى خوفَ بَعلِها

25. Then turned back, so she moaned
When he left fearing her husband,

٢٥. فأَنشدَت لاِمِّها وَغَنَّت
وَالغنجُ مِن بعض شُغلِها

26. And she sang to her mother and glorified:
While the melody was part of her preoccupation,

٢٦. يا اِمّي الحَبيبُ الَّذي تُريدُ
لو زار ما كان أَبرَكوا صَباح

27. "O mother, the beloved I want,
If he visited, they wouldn't have bid him good morning."

٢٧. لمّن طرقْ أَمسِ بابَ داري
أَخذ قُلَيبي مَعو وَراح
